Chapter – 13– Sri Ramacharitha Manas –
Ayodhya Kanda– The hunch-back Manthara returns with deep distress to the
chamber of Devi Kaikeyi
Devi Kaikeyi, the mother of Bharatha has a
dull-witted maidservant Manthara who is a hunch-back, wicked by nature. Devi Sarada
assigned her duty on the hunch-back of ill reputation and returned to her
abode. Manthara arrived in the city and found fabulous decorations, arrangements , and festivities in full swing, she was surprised and enquired the people “What
was the reason for the sudden celebration?” The people happily replied to her
that it was the upcoming celebration of the coronation ceremony of Rama as the King
of Ayodhya declared by the King, she was so distressed to hear the news. The
evil-minded Manthara born in a lowly clan pondered over how to execute the malicious
plan overnight so that the upcoming celebration gets disrupted like the
Bhila women's plan on how to get access to the honeycomb hanging on the tree.
Manthara with a sober face arrived in the chamber of Devi Kaikeyi who was extremely
delighted. Manthara heaved a sigh of deep distress, shed crocodile tears, watching
her grief Devi Kaikeyi began to speak “Oh! Manthara, what was the reason for
your distress? You are a silly woman, Lakshman must have taught you a lesson.” The sinful Manthara did not speak, instead, she hissed like a serpent to the queen.
