Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – The meritorious rewards of reading or recitation of the legend of Bharatha

Chapter – 319– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The meritorious rewards of reading or recitation of the legend of Bharatha

Bharatha worshiped the wooden sandals of Lord Sri Ramachandra on a regular basis, with a heart full of love and devotion, in between he was constantly referred to the affairs of the King of Ayodhya. He continuously engaged in contemplation of Lord Rama and Devi Sita, with the tears overflowing uttering the sacred name ‘Rama’. In the meantime, Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita dwelt in the forest, Bharatha undertaken extreme penance and austerities in the hermitage of Nandgrama which resulted in his body shrunk into a skeleton, everyone praised the devotion of Bharatha. The illustrious Sages felt abashed watching the extreme penance, austerities, religious fervor, and devotion of Bharatha that made him into emaciated his body. The legend of Bharatha describes the purity, and devotion, is the source of joy and fountain of perpetual bliss, it would destroy the mountain-sized sins and evilness of Kali era, it removes the darkness of ignorance of Jeeva like the bright sunlight, it would eliminate the illusion/Maya/ignorance and the Thapathrya/ Adhideivika, Adhibhauthika, and Adhyathmika, which push the Jeeva to get snarled with the material matters of impermanent nature, causes grief and agony of worldly existence. The legend of Bharatha resembles the lion that crushes the herd of elephants like sins and sufferings of worldly existence. The legend of Bharatha is the source of eternal bliss and pure devotion like an unblemished moon, ultimately it would relieve the Jeeva from the repeated births as well.

If Bharatha was not born who is the essence of pure love and devotion to Lord Rama and Devi Sita, who would teach the highest of the austerities, vows, religious rites, penances, observance of celibacy, Shamadhamadhi, the practice of perfect control of mind and senses, etc. that was beyond the imagination of Sages and Rishis? Who would dispel the agonies, pain, sufferings of worldly existence? Who would persuade the sinful Tulsidas to practice devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Ramachandra in this Kali era?

Whoever sings in praise of the glory of Bharatha, or listens to the splendor of Bharatha would achieve pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Rama and Devi Sita and get rid of grief and sufferings of worldly existence and interest in material matters of fleeting nature.

Chapter – 318– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Lord Adishesha, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Saraswathi fails to describe the austerities and penance of Bharatha

Bharatha who is dear as the life of Rama did not take the appreciation of his achievements, like the Chathaka bird earnestly wait for the droplets from Swathi Nakshathra and the Swan that are famous for its power of discrimination, skillfully separates the milk from the water. Bharatha undertook severe austerities and penances living in the hermitage of Nandigram, his body grew thinner day by day, the strength of the limbs and pleasing appearance and effulgence of face remained the same, his love and devotion for Rama was dazzling as ever. His virtues were steadily advanced, he was not at all distressed, he was self-restrained, had perfect control over mind and senses, his religious practices and austerities shone stars on the cloudless sky like in his heart. His faith at the lotus feet of Rama stood as the pole star, the prospect of Rama’s return after the exile period represented the full moon, the pain of separation from Lord Rama glistened like the milky way, his affection for Rama was pure, like the spotless moon that shone in the middle of the galaxy of stars. The illustrious poets were incompetent to describe the life of Bharatha in the Nandigram, his austerities, vows, penance, religious practices, dispassion, virtues, etc. were impossible to describe even the thousand tongued Adhishesha, Lord Ganesha who is the Lord of wisdom, and Goddess Saraswathi who is the Goddess of speech.

Chapter – 317– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha conducted practicing austerities and penance in Nandigram

Bharatha after obtaining permission from preceptors, called out for astrologers and found an auspicious day, and installed the Ramapadhuka/ on the throne of Ayodhya. Further, he received permission from Devi Kausalya and preceptors, prostrated before the RamaPadhuka.  Bharatha who is the essence of love and devotion, took a leave to Nandhigrama where he wanted to conduct strict austerities and penances. Bharatha erected a Parnnashala/hermitage/hut made of leaves and bark of trees in Nandhigrama, abandoned the royal costume, attired in a saffron robe, adorned in prayer beads, and matted hair locks, the Kushagrass spread as a bed on the pit down from the ground level, abandoned all the ornaments, and wooden sandal, practiced extreme austerities and vows. Lord Indra envied the wealth and richness of the Kingdom of Ayodhya, King Dhasharatha has possessed immense wealth that excelled Lord Kubera. In that glorious city of Ayodhya  Bharatha has dwelt as an indifferent bee in the garden of Champaka flowers. Whoever devoted at the lotus feet of Rama would discard the worldly enjoyments, sensual pleasures, and interest in material matters of trivial and impermanent nature as a vomit.

Chapter – 316– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha seeking permission of preceptors to leave to Nandigram and undertake austerities

The people of Ayodhya performed various austerities, rites, undertaken strict vows, for the safe return of Rama after fourteen years of exile from the Kingdom. They refused to take pleasure in the material matters, or bodily pleasures followed strict celibacy, and eagerly waited for the return of Rama from the woods. Bharatha instructed the ministers, attendants, and loyal servants to take good care of the Kingdom and its subject, he called out for young brother Shathrughna and entrusted the duty and service of the welfare of all the mothers. Bharatha summoned the twice-born/Bhramins, reverentially prostrated before them, and spoke with folded hands “Oh! Mahathma, kindly entrust me with the duties low or high status, good or indifferent without any hesitation.” He called out for ministers, prominent members in the Kingdom, the two brothers went to invite the preceptors Vashishta and Vamadeva, soon everyone assembled in the Hall, Bharatha prostrated before them and spoke with folded hands “Oh! Noble souls, Oh! Prabho, kindly allow me to proceed to Nandigram, and live as a hermit with your permission.” The preceptors overcame with the rush of love watching the devotion of Bharatha, replied “Oh! Thatha, whatever you speak, think, and do are the essence of religious merits for the welfare of the world.”

Chapter – 315– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Janaka supervise the state of affairs of the Kingdom of Ayodhya for few days and returns to Mithila

Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita shone as Bhakti/Devotion, Vairagya/dispassion, and Gnana/wisdom respectively. On the other hand, the Sages, Rishis, twice-born, preceptors, Bharatha, King Janaka, and the families were heartbroken at the separation from Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita. Their mind was fully occupied by the virtues, amiability, love of Rama, they moved in utter silence. They have crossed the river Yamuna, and spend that day without any meal. The next halt of the journey was in the village Shrungaberipura, on the riverbank of Ganga where Guha made all the arrangements for the comfortable stay of his guests. They have traveled in ferries to cross the river Sai, took a holy dip in the river Gomathi, and reached Ayodhya on the fourth day. King Janaka stayed in Ayodhya for four days to supervise the administration of the Kingdom, entrusting the duties and responsibilities to the respective ministers of the assembly, preceptors, and Bharatha, and he left to the Kingdom of Mithila. The people of Ayodhya sincerely followed the instructions of the preceptors and lived in happiness in the Ramarajadhani.

Chapter – 314– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama describes the virtues, pure love, and devotion of Bharatha

Rama and Devi Sita along with Lakshman prostrated before Sage Vashishta and Devi Arundhathi, and received their blessings, returned to their hermitage with a mixed feeling of joy and sorrow. The Nishadharaja Guha was send off with great affection, but it was a heart-wrenching moment for Guha to leave the Lord. The Kolas, Kirathas, Bhillas, and foresters were returned to their respective villages unwillingly at the request of Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita. The villagers repeatedly prostrated before Lord Rama and dejectedly left the scene. Lord Rama, Devi Sita, and Lakshman took a seat under the shade of a Banyan tree and grieved over the separation from the families, parents, preceptors, and dearest ones. Rama described the virtues, pleasant disposition, love, and devotion of Bharatha, and recollected the conversation with him was described to Devi Sita and Lakshman. Rama was overpowered by the pure love and affection of Bharatha by words, mind, and deed while describing the virtues of Bharatha, all those animate and inanimate creatures in the forest of Chitrakoot felt inconsolable. The deities showered flowers on Rama, and informed the state of mind of people who departed to their own villages and Kingdom, are safe and blissful, have left without fear or anxiousness.

Chapter – 313– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The people of Ayodhya and Mithila led by Bharatha and King Janaka has left Chitrakoot

Rama approached Devi Kaikeyi, mother of Bharatha, and prostrated before her, and embraced her affectionately, thus he removed all her embarrassments and grief and made her seated in a comfortable palanquin to return to Ayodhya. In the meantime, Devi Sita bade farewell to her father Janaka, and mother Devi Sunayana, relatives and companions, she hurried back to her mothers-in-law and embraced them with great affection, it was beyond description. Devi Sita received an abundance of blessings and advice from both families; she was drenched in the love of her parents and mothers-in-law. Lord of Raghu helped his mother’s board on the beautiful palanquin, consoled them with pleasant words, Rama and Lakshman embraced the mothers again and again, finally bade farewell to them. Thus, the two large groups led by King Janaka and Bharatha, followed by several elephants, horses, chariots, carts, etc. set out their journey to their respective Kingdom. All of their heart was brimming with love for Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita, they were in a state of bliss, the animals such as elephant, horses, bullocks were reluctant to leave the forest and nearness of Rama moved through the woods with less enthusiasm.

Chapter – 312– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Ayodhya Kanda – Bharatha and Shathrughna leaving the Chithrakoot after obtaining permission from Rama

The Rishis, Sages, and hermits assembled were overwhelmed with various emotions couldn’t speak, or act lost all their reasoning ability and dispassion watching the boundless love and affection of Rama and Bharatha. Sage Vashishta and King Janaka lost their words, can’t be called it as a mundane, even the excellent poets would find it difficult to describe that occasion, it was the love embodied as Rama and Bharatha which would shrink the articulateness. Rama embraced Bharatha and pacified him, then he moved to Shathrughna and embraced him, immediately the ministers, attendants, and people assembled were dispersed their ways in order to leave Bharatha alone for a while to regain his courage. The people of Ayodhya and Mithila began preparation for their journey back to the Kingdom, they were disappointed to leave the forest. Bharatha and Shathrughna hold the wooden sandals on their head, bowed before Rama and Devi Sita, after seeking permission from Rama, they set out for the journey to Ayodhya, the Sages and Rishis blessed them and deities honored them again and again.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Bharatha bade-farewell to Rama

Chapter – 311– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha bade-farewell to Rama

Bharatha was reverentially prostrated before Rama clasped his feet, and sought permission to leave the woods, the deities have taken advantage of this situation and made the people wearier of forest life. Even the adverse situation has proved to be a boon in the presence of the Supreme Lord, they all have made up their mind to survive until the return of their Lord after fourteen years of life in the woods, otherwise, they would have been afflicted with the grief of separation from Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita. Thus, Lord Rama removed the trepidations of the deities, and the deities turned favorable to the people of Ayodhya, Rama embraced Bharatha, thus the two brothers remained in the embrace for a while, the love and affection shared by the two brothers were beyond words. Rama’s body, mind, and speeches were arrested with love for his brother, tears overflowing through the lotus-like eyes, even the deities were heartbroken watching the love of two brothers. The host of Sages, Sages Vasishta, Vamadeva, King Janaka who are renounced souls, free from attachment and dispassionate nature could not control their tears.

Chapter – 310– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha reverentially receives the wooden sandal/Padhuka of Rama

Sage Tulasidas says the mouth is the important part of the body, which supplies food for the nourishment of the whole body. Lord Rama pacified Bharatha with his sweet nectar-like words “Oh! Thatha, the duty, and responsibilities of the King are sincerely following the Shashthra” in this way Prabhu Sriram comforted Bharatha in many ways, but Bharatha could not find a solace unless and until receive something to remember Prabhu Sriram in his absence. Lord Rama felt embarrassed watching the crowd of assembly, and his love for Bharatha on the other side, finally Lord of Raghu removed his wooden sandals and offered to Bharatha was reverentially received and placed on his head. The wooden sandals of the all-merciful Lord resembled the guardian of the Kingdom of Ayodhya, it was the precious jewel of Bharatha’s love at the lotus feet of Rama, it represents the two sacred syllables ‘Ra Ma’ which removes the grief and miseries of worldly existence and provide liberation from the repeated births, it resembled the two giant doors to protect the clan of Raghu’s, it was the two hands that abundantly grace the performance of the righteous deeds and guide the Jeeva through the noble path. Bharatha was transported to a state of bliss after receiving the wooden sandals from Rama, he considered it is Lord Rama and Devi Sita, agreed to return to the Kingdom of Ayodhya for the welfare of all.

Chapter – 309– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama advises Bharatha to return to Ayodhya and rule the Kingdom under the guidance of the preceptors

The Supreme Lord Rama who is the companion of the distressed, was pleased to listen to the guileless and soft speeches of Bharatha, began to speak words appropriate for the time, zone and situation “Oh! Dear brother, it was our preceptor Sage Vashishta and the King of Mithila who has taken a decision for the welfare of you and me, as well as the people of Ayodhya. Sage Vishwamithra, Sage Vashishta, Vamadeva, and King of Mithila are our guardians, they have decided who should live in the forest and who should be in the Kingdom of Ayodhya, hence leave all your apprehensions, you can’t even dream of troubles in their guidance. We, two brothers, have achieved highest of the piousness, our achievement in the material life, spiritual life, virtues, and fame lies in following the command of our father. The fruitfulness of our life lies in following the command of our father who keeps up his promise always and proves this world to follow the perceptions of the Veda. Whoever follows the instructions of the Preceptor, parents, Veda, and Master/Lord, never face mishaps even if they ride along the troubled path. Therefore, leave all your fear and anxiousness, and return to Ayodhya, rule the Kingdom wisely for the designated period of time. The responsibility of the protection of treasury, lands, fortresses, wealth, richness of the Kingdom and its subjects lies on the lotus feet of our preceptors. You have to protect the Earth, and the people of Ayodhya, sincerely following the instruction of our preceptors, Sage Vashishta, Sage Vamadeva, the chief of Minister Sumanthra, and our mothers Devi Kausalya, Devi Sumithra, and Devi Kaikeyi.”

Chapter – 308– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha seeking the advice of Rama on how to conduct the worship of Lord of Raghu

Bharatha spoke fervently “Oh! Deenadhayala, Oh! Kripala, Oh! Kosalapala, kindly advise me how shall I practice worship of my Master, Lord of Raghu at your lotus feet in the absence of you during your life in the woods. Oh! Prabho, the subjects of your kingdom, your companions and relatives were extremely happy in your presence, because of your kindness and compassion, they have considered the grief of worldly existence, death and birth are trivial in your presence, but in your absence, it is not possible for them to achieve the state of serenity and peace. Oh! Prabho, you are the protector of Jeeva, you are the source of welfare and auspiciousness, you are inseparable from the Jeevathma, you are that supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, hence kindly take into consideration of the people of Ayodhya, families, and companions, Oh! Prabho, I am not least disturbed, I am certain that My Master will take consideration of all these matters and I still remember the kindness of my Master that removed my fear, grief, and anxiousness, and wiped off the flaws in me, Oh! Prabho, kindly advise me, and instruct this servant to follow your orders blamelessly.” The whole assembly of Brahmins, Rishis, Sages, preceptors, people of Ayodhya, and Mithila cheered “Bharatha is righteous like the swan that separates the milk from the water.”

Bharatha visited the entire Chithrakoot and the sacred places in five days, on the last day the hermits and people along with Bharatha and Shathrughna spend their day discussing the glorious myths of Lord Hari and Lord Hara till the arrival of the dusk.  On the next morning, after performing ablutions, all the people, hermits, Sages, and Rishis, illustrious twice-born in large number, King of Mithila and Bharatha assembled before the Lord of Raghu. Rama perceived that the day was highly auspicious to return for all those people who have conducted journey to wood, but the compassionate Lord Rama did not utter a word or hurt the people assembled before him. Rama looked at preceptor Sage Vashishta and King of Mithila, at the very next moment, he withdrew his eyes in nervousness and stared at the ground. The whole assembly praised the kindness of Rama, realized that they could not find an ideal Master considerate as Rama in the whole Universe. Bharatha who is clever and thoughtful perceived the wish of Rama, he rose from the seat and prostrated before the assembly and Lord Rama, and spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, you have fulfilled all my wishes and you have suffered a lot of hardships in the woods, in addition to that we have put you in a lot of inconveniences. Oh! Prabho, Lord Sri Ramachandra, kindly give us permission to leave, so that I may go back to Ayodhya and patiently wait for your safe return.”

There was nothing to surprise that everything turned out auspicious to Bharatha who is dear as life to Rama, and Mother Earth showed great hospitality to the beloved brothers of Rama, even the ordinary Jeeva who utters the name ‘Rama’ while yawning would achieve all the supernatural powers with the grace of that benevolent Lord. In this way, Bharatha visited the entire land of Chitrakoot, while the hermits and Sages got abashed watching the love and devotion of Bharatha at the lotus feet of Rama. The beautiful forest, ponds, rivers, streams, and inhabitants, birds and animals of the woods, cluster of auspicious trees thriving with flowers and succulent fruits, creepers and plants in an abundance of alluring flowers of rich fragrances, multiplied the beauty of the Chitrakoot. Bharatha was fascinated by watching the incomparable beauty of the forest, curiously enquired Sage Athri about the details of the plants, their origin, name and attributes, and their purifying effect. They have taken a holy dip in a sacred pond, worshiped the sacred shrines, after some time, with the permission of Sage Athri, they have taken seats under the shade of the peepal tree contemplating upon Lord Sri Ramachandra, Lakshman, and Devi Sita. The deities were highly pleased observing the amiability, virtue, and devotion of Bharatha and showered their blessings. In this way, Bharatha and Shathrughna spent three fourth of the day in the forest and returned to the hermitage of Rama, and prostrated before the Lord.

Sage Athri was transported to a state of bliss, began to speak “This is one of the holiest lands on the Earth, which accomplish the austerities and penances undertaken by the people of spiritual interest from an ancient period of time. My disciples found the soil of the land has rich in mineral wealth, it has the source of underground spring, hence they dug this huge well of limitless depth in order to collect the spring water for the purpose of the people living in and around Chitrakoot. You have deposited the sacred waters collected from all the Theertha and elevated the status of it too far more inexplicable, which provides commendable religious merit to the people who consume the water from this well. Oh! Bharatha, this marvelous well would be named as ‘Bharathakoopa’, which could provide all the religious merits in abundance, the sanctity of the well has been enhanced due to the presence of waters from several sacred Theerthas. Oh! Son, whoever takes a dip in this water with faith and devotion would achieve purity of thoughts, words, and deeds.”
