Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – King Dhasharatha meets Rama at his bedside and regains cheerfulness

Chapter – 44– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Dhasharatha meets Rama at his bedside and regains cheerfulness

King Dhasharatha regained his consciousness, remembered Rama, and changed his position on the bed. Sumanthra informed the King about the presence of Rama and advised him to use appropriate words on this occasion. Soon, the King got himself seated on the bed with the help of Sumanthra, recovered from his exhaustion, opened his eyes, and looked at Rama who prostrated before his father. King overwhelmed with various emotions, tightly embraced Rama, as if the serpent regained its precious gem, he looked at Rama, while watching Rama his eyes were flooded with tears, once again overpowered with the grief, could not utter a word, he repeatedly embraced Rama and kissed on his forehead. King heartily prayed to Lord that Rama should not proceed to the woods. He sincerely prayed to Lord Shambhu “Oh! Ashuthoshi, kindly listen to my prayers, you get easily pleased with your devotees, and you are benevolent, kindly relieve me from the distress.”

Chapter – 43– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya speaks pleasantly to Rama

The words spoken out by Raghuvara were true and appropriate, yet the evil-minded Devi Kaikeyi was not able to absorb them all, like a leech that sloping on the watery surface. The queen rejoiced at heart to understand the willingness of Rama to leave the Kingdom, immediately she assumed a false affection on her face, and began to speak “ Oh! Rama, I feel the affection to you and Bharatha is the cause for the grief of the King. Oh! Dear son, you are the source of delight to your parents and brothers, should not do anything that makes others unhappy. You are true to your words; you have truly adhered to the words of your parents. I wish you should speak to your father, later it should not bring soreness in your relationship with him. Oh! Rama, your father is righteous and truthful, that was the reason he has achieved you as his son.” The affectionate words rushed out of the mouth of Devi Kaikeyi resembled the sacred river Gaya, on the cursed land of Magdha.  The sweet words adopted by Devi Kaikeyi were sounded pleasant to Rama, like all the watercourses confluence in the sacred river Ganga.

Chapter – 42– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama reveals his willingness to proceed to the woods and requests Devi Kaikeyi to speak the truth

Rama spoke fervently “Oh! Mother, I shall be able to meet many ascetics and noble souls in the forest, and it would be more beneficial to me. I have my father’s command and mother’s approval to proceed to the forest and live a life of a hermit. Oh! Mother, Bharatha is dear as my life, he will be crowned as the King of Ayodhya, I feel the Almighty Lord is highly propitious towards me today. If I refuse to follow the command of my father, I would be stuck in the middle of fools in the assembly and I will regret it in my entire life. If I leave this opportunity to explore in the woods, it would be like nurturing a plant instead of living in the woods, Oh! Mother, this is one of the rarest opportunities, I should not leave it. I have only one thing that pains me deeply watching the miserable state of my father. Oh! Dear Mother, I can’t bear to see my father grieving over a trifling matter. The Lord of Ayodhya, King Dasaratha is brave, and ocean of goodness, I must have committed a severe sin which prevents the King from speaking his heart out, hence I request you to speak the truth.”

Chapter – 41– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama’s pleasant conversation with Devi Kaikeyi

Devi Kaikeyi continued “ Oh! Rama, your father is in dilemma, neither he cannot reject the boons promised nor make you unhappy, he is suffering from a deep love for his elder son, and the fear of breaking promises, which was never happened in the race of Raghus. Oh! Rama, all that you can do to remove his mental agony by following his words sincerely, in this way you can restore the happiness in your father.” Devi Kaikeyis words were full of callousness, and pungent that could rip off the heart, her tongue resembled a bow and the spiteful words flew out of her mouth were powerful arrows released against the King as her target, it was the maliciousness in her assumed the form of a hero skilled in archery. Further, Devi Kaikeyi detailed all that happened to Rama and took a seat near him. The Supreme Lord Rama, the Lord of Raghu's who is the ocean of mercy, virtues, and bliss smiled at heart, and spoke most pleasing words to Devi Kaikeyi “Oh! Mother, the son is fortunate who sincerely follows the order of his parents, it is rare to find a son who satisfies his parents by words, deeds, and mind.”

Chapter – 40– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama enquires the reason for the grief of his father to Devi Kaikeyi

The Jewel of Raghu clan/Raghuvamsamani, saw the Lord of  Ayodhya, in a wretched state on the floor, as if the terror-stricken elephant watching at the lioness, his lips were dried, words were not coming out of the throat, the whole limbs were motionless and lack of effulgence, gave out the appearance of the King of serpent without gem on its forehead. Rama saw Devi Kakeyi angrily seated next to the King resembled the death personified, waiting for the final hours of the King. Rama who is bliss personified has never experienced grief or agony, witnessed the same for the first time in his life. The supreme Bhramam personified as Raghuvamsamani, regained serenity and spoke to his step-mother in a soft tone “Oh! Mother, kindly tell me the cause of the grief of my father, so that I can make all effort to remove it.” Devi Kaikeyi spoke vehemently “Oh! Rama, your father is very fond of you and I think that was the main cause for his grief. He has promised me boons several years ago, that I have kept in reserve, now I have claimed the boons as I have desired. Oh! Rama, the reason for your father’s grief is neither he can’t deny the boons I have requested, nor he could displease you.”

Devi Kaikeyi spoke in utter dislike “Oh! Sumanthra, the King had no sleep yesterday night, he was all awake and God only knows the reason for it. He has been calling out for Rama several times till the daybreak and was not willing to speak anything to me. Therefore, bring Rama immediately so that we will come to know what he really intends to speak.” Sumanthra looked at the King as if seeking permission to leave, which was approved by the Lord of Ayodhya. Sumanthra left to the fortress of Rama and Devi Sita, on his way he could not understand a single thing, the King is in grief-stricken, and motionless, he could barely speak anything to Rama, the situation of the King is appalling to watch. Sumanthra became inconsolable, the ministers and attendants who met him were anxiously waiting to receive the news of the King. Sumanthra approached the chamber of Jewel of the Raghu clan, Rama was received with great honor, considered Sumanthara as equal to his father. Sumanthra informed Rama about the King who wanted to see him immediately and he has something important message to deliver, soon Sumanthra and Rama returned to the chamber where the King Dasaratha was settled, on their way, all the attendants and ministers were found perplexed watching at Sumanthra and Rama.

It is not an ordinary matter, usually, the King wakes up in the last hour of the night, but today the Lord of Ayodhya is still on the bed, does not feel strange?” They rushed back to the assembly and met the chief of the minister and charioteer Sumanthra “Oh! Sumanthara, kindly meets the King in his chamber, so that we can make arrangements for the grand ceremony.” Thus, Sumanthra approached the chamber of the King, the entire atmosphere in the chamber appeared gloomy and dull, hence he was afraid to move further, felt like he has stepped into the most haunted place where the demons and spirits waiting to devour him. The very sign of the room appeared as the abode of grief and disaster. Sumanthra kept moving through the dark pathways, finally arrive the place where Lord of Ayodhya was laid on the floor, and Devi Kaikeyi was seated next to him. He wept bitterly and spoke “Why are you bringing destruction to the entire clan?”, she did not utter a word, as though she was preparing to meet the possibilities of the cremation. King Dasaratha was grief-stricken, cried out ‘Oh! Rama, Oh! Rama, Oh! Rama’ all his efforts to raise from the floor went in vain like the bird lost its wings, all the trials to raise from the floor were failed. He sincerely prayed at heart “May the night never ends or the daybreak does not arrive so that no one would inform about the painful news to Rama. Oh! Lord Surya, the Lord of the Raghu clan, you would be disheartened to see the plight of Ayodhya tomorrow.” The affection of the King and the resentment of Devi Kaikeyi was beyond description, the whole night was passed the King lying on the floor wailing and thinking about the destiny of Rama and the people of Ayodhya. Finally, the daylight has arrived, there were sounds of divine music instruments, conch, flute, etc. was heard at the doorstep. Chapter – 36– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Dhasharatha orders Devi Kaikeyi to keep out of his sight

King Dasaratha was pained to listen to the harsh words of Devi Kaikeyi and spoke “Oh! Devi, you can speak as you wish, you are not to blame for it, I understand it was my bad luck that I have possessed a wife of devilish nature to speak against me. Bharatha would never allow himself to crown as the King of Ayodhya, but my ill-fortune and your association with the wicked sinful Manthara has completely taken control of your mind. I believe all that happened was the result of my sins, the tide has turned against me at the unfortunate moment. Oh! Devi, I was dreamt of the Kingdom of Ayodhya flourish under the regime of Rama, who is the symbol of virtues. I wished for all the brothers would serve Rama relentlessly, and they collectively bring fame to the Kingdom, and their reputation will spread across the three worlds. I am certain that the stain on your reputation and my grief will not disappear even after our death. Do whatever you feel, but the least, do not show your face to me. Keep yourself out of my sight, I pray with folded hands, do not show your face to me as long as am alive. You will reap the fruit of your misdeeds and you will repent for it. Oh! Unfortunate woman, you have taken out the life of a cow.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Devi Kaikeyi continues to hurt the King

Chapter – 35– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kaikeyi continues to hurt the King

King Dhasharatha could not control his grief, fell on the ground, hit his head with both hands, and sobbed “Oh! Rama, Oh! Rama, Oh! Rama, Oh! Raghunatha!” soon all his limbs became motionless, lost his speech, voices were broken, lips were dried, felt miserable like the fish out of the water. Thus, the wish-fulfilling tree/Kalpatharu was thrashed by an untamed female elephant, Devi Kaikeyi burdened him with the sword-like toxic words, “Oh! Rajan, if you were not intended to fulfill the promises given to me, why did you encourage me to ask for the boon? Oh! Emperor on the Earth, how could you do that to me? You were so kind to the distressed and poor, and you had the reputation of being generous and enjoyed the fame, yet you are miserly to me? Is it possible to remain unhurt while playing the role of a hero? Oh! Rajan, either keep up your promise and follow my words, do not wail like a woman, it does not suit you. A noble person does not show interest in wealth, richness, money, fame, possessions, life, wife, sons, etc. An honest, Viraktha/renounced person considers the material pleasures as straw, takes no interest in it.”

Chapter – 34– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Dhasharatha pleads to Devi Kaikeyi to change her mind

Devi Kaikeyi voiced “Oh! Rajan, remember my words if Rama does not retire to woods before the daybreak, leaving all the royal comforts, attired in a saffron robe of a hermit, and matted hair locks, I promise you that you will not see me alive, and you will bear the ill reputation of it.” Thus, Devi Kaikeyi rose on her feet resembled the brimming water of anger splashed down from the mountain of sin, and the overflowing water broken all the boundaries gave out a terrible appearance. The two boons she has asked were the coronation of Bharatha as the King of Ayodhya and the exile of Rama from the Kingdom resembled the two banks of the river, her anger resembled the whirlwind in the water caused by the wicked influence of Manthara, uprooted the King who appeared as a giant tree on the bank, and the wickedness of Kaikeyi like muddy water rushed towards the ocean of adversity. Finally, King Dhasharatha understood that all that was spoken were real, the demand of Devi Kaikeyi was true, in a moment the King felt that his death is dancing above his head in the form of his beloved consort. Suddenly, King fell down at the feet of Devi Kaikeyi, and tightly clasped her feet, and begged with teary eyes “Oh! Devi, do not be an ax on the clan of Raghu, kindly show some respect to the solar race. Oh! Devi, you can ask for my head, I am readily offering it to you, but do not separate me from Rama while I am alive. Kindly leave Rama with me, otherwise, you will burn with anguish and grief all your life.”

Chapter – 33– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Dhasharatha pleads to Devi Kaikeyi to leave anger

King Dhasharatha pleaded “Oh! Devi, kindly leave your anger and ask for a reasonable boon, so that I could witness the coronation ceremony of Bharatha with my own eyes. Oh! Devi, a fish may continue to live without water, or the serpent may get along without the gem on its forehead, but I promise you, I can’t live without Rama. Oh! Beloved one, kindly understands the fact that my very existence depends on Rama.” Devi Kaikeyi could not control her rage after listening to the most sensitive declaration by the King, which worked as the ghee added to the sacrificial fire. Devi Kaikeyi shrieked out of anger “Oh! Rajan, you may adopt thousands of pretexts, none of them are not going to work with me. You have two choices before you, either you grant me the boon I have asked, or refuse it and earn a bad reputation in the clan, I am not interested in any more arguments with you. Rama is virtuous, and you too virtuous and wise, and same with Devi Kausalya too. I have known all of you, I will definitely settle the scores with you all, especially to Devi Kausalya who has adopted to confer upon me for every single issue.”

Chapter – 32– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Dhasharatha pacifies Devi Kaikeyi with the first boon, and praising the virtues of Rama

King Dasaratha solemnly spoke “Oh! Devi, Rama has no greed for the Kingdom or the crown. He is deeply attached to his younger brother Bharatha, I was sincerely following the rule of the scriptures, thus I have chosen the elder one Rama to perform the coronation ceremony, still, I shall promise you Rama and Bharatha are two eyes of mine. I have not found any difference between them. One more thing, I promise on Rama hundredth time, there is no influence or intervention of Devi Kausalya in this matter, she is innocent and she has not spoken a single word about it. Definitely, I have announced for the celebration and preparation for the event without discussing with you, that’s why my long-cherished wish to crown Rama as the King of Ayodhya was unaccomplished. Oh! Devi, leave your resentment and anger, get yourself ready with the auspicious clothe and ornaments, your wish is going to fulfill in a few days. Oh! Devi, your second boon was taken my life out of me, that was not at all agreeable, still, I could not believe it, my heart is aching, was that your anger or is it true? Oh! Devi, kindly tell me the fault of Rama, the whole world is praising the virtues and kindness of Rama. I am certain that you too spoke about his gentleness several times, admired and loved him, but after listening to your second boon, I believe all that love and affection to Rama was a pretense. Rama is kind and compassionate to all, even to his enemies, how could he act against the will of his mother?”

Chapter – 31– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Dhasharatha promises to crown Bharatha as the King of Ayodhya to Devi Kaikeyi

King Dhasharatha who is the essence of righteousness took the courage to open his eyes, heavily banged his head on both hands, and cried out “I am completely trapped, finding no way to get out.” Looked at Devi Kaikeyi who was fuming in extreme rage, resembled his powerful sword out of the sheath, her malicious mind as the edges that was sharpened in the grindstone like the wicked mind of hunch-back Manthara. Every single word spelled has the sharpness of the powerful sword of the King, he understood the boon she was asked to fulfill were enough to take away his life, began to speak to her gently “Oh! Devi, your sharp and inauspicious words are puffing away the affection and confidence shared between us. Oh! Timid lady, Bharatha, and Rama are two eyes of mine, I promise the same on Lord Shankara. I shall make all the arrangements to send the messengers to bring back Bharatha and Shathrughna to the Kingdom before the daybreak, after that we can fix an auspicious day and time to perform the coronation of Bharatha as the King of Ayodhya. I shall promise you; we will arrange for a grand ceremony and crown Bharatha as the King of Ayodhya.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Devi Kaikeyi’s heated argument with the King Dhasharatha

Chapter – 30– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kaikeyi’s heated argument with the King Dhasharatha

King Dhasharatha wept bitterly “An inauspicious incident has occurred at the propitious hour, I have trusted a woman and thereby doomed to darkness, I was a Sadhaka who was striving hard to achieve the fruit of my Yoga, the fruit of self-realization.” Devi Kaikeyi fumed watching the pathetic state of the King, “Oh! Rajan, Is Bharatha not your son? Have you accepted me as your queen for money? If my words are too sharp as powerful arrows to your ears, why did not give serious thought before declaring your wish to perform the coronation of Rama as the King of Ayodhya? You can either accept my proposal or reject it, but remember that you belong to the illustrious clan of Raghu’s who never fails to keep up their promises. Oh! Rajan, you can refuse the boons promised to me several years ago, and proceed with your decision in the assembly. You have promised to give me boons, thinking that I would ask for a handful of parched grains. I shall bring to your notice the righteous deeds of that illustrious Dhadhichi, King Sibi, and Bali for their sacrifices, generosity, and truthfulness, to keep up their promises. The noble King Sibi was tested by Lord Agni and Lord Indra who were disguised as pigeon and hawk respectively. The pigeon took shelter on the lap of the King, as a true Kshatriya the King was not willing to give away the prey to hawk. On the other hand, the hawk insisted the King give his prey or give King’s flesh weighing the same as the pigeon, otherwise, it would die out of starvation.  King chopped off the muscular part of the body and kept on the weighing scale, alas! the process continued, added his flesh on the scale, the flesh couldn’t match the weight of the pigeon, finally, King Sibi prepared to sieve off his head was intervened by Lord Agni and Indra. Lord Indra battled against the demon Vrathrasura, the battle continued for several years, Indra approached Lord Vishnu and sought shelter.  Lord Vishnu advised Lord Indra to approach the illustrious Sage Dhadhichi who was taking penance in the Naimisharanya and appeal for his bone to kill the demon. Sage Dhadhichi graciously left his mortal coil for Indra, and the artisan of deities Vishwakarma carved a powerful weapon that resembled lightning out of the bone of Sage Dhadhichi, later Indra killed the demon with the weapon/Vajrayudha. The demon King Bali conquered the three worlds, the deities lost their glories and abode, the mother of deities Devi Adhithi grieved over her children’s pitiful state. She appealed to Lord Vishnu who was granted a boon to be born as her son. Devi Adhiti undertook severe austerities of Payovratha and Lord Vishnu was born as Dwarf/Vamana to Devi Adhithi and Sage Kashyapa, approached Bali in the Yajja arena, who was willing to offer anything for the Bhramachari, was asked for three strides of land and measured the whole Universe.” In this way, Devi Kaikeyi continued to pour the malicious words like the salt added to the wounds.

Chapter – 29– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kaikeyi asks for two boons to King Dhasharatha and the grief of the King

The King’s desire to crown Rama as the King of Ayodhya, represents the beautiful grove that provides shelter to lovely birds appear as joy, Devi Kaikeyi resembled the Bhila woman who is all prepared to hunt down the birds with the shot of sharp arrows, with her merciless words. Devi Kaikeyi gracefully moved towards the King and spoke “Oh! Beloved Lord, I have to ask for a boon that pleases my heart, hence I would ask for the crowning ceremony of Bharatha as the King of Ayodhya, kindly promise me that you would provide me that boon. Oh! Lord, I may ask for the second boon with folded hands, kindly accomplish my wish, let Rama live in the woods for fourteen years, as a hermit completely disconnected from the world.” The King was shocked at the gentle words of Devi Kaikeyi, he could not utter a word out of grief, like the Chakravaha in agony felt the touch of moonlight. He turned pale, as if struck by the lightning, closed his eyes tightly, shriveled in extreme pain, murmured “My long-cherished wish was about to fulfill, the celestial tree of desire with fully blossomed flowers was about to bear fruits were thrashed by an untamed elephant resembled Kaikeyi, she has set fire to the happiness of the subjects of Ayodhya, and brought everlasting misery to the Kingdom.”

Chapter – 28– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kaikeyi reminds the King about the boons promised several years ago

Devi Kaikeyi began to speak in an affectionate tone “ Oh! Rajan, kindly do not prompt me to ask for boons, you won’t give anything. You have promised me to give a couple of boons several years ago, yet I am doubtful whether you could keep up your promise.” King Dasaratha smiled at her innocently and said “Oh! Dear, I have understood the whole thing now. You are tricky, fond of acting angry, in fact, you have kept the boons in reserve, you haven’t asked about it. Honestly, I have completely forgotten about my promise to you, as usual. Oh! Devi, do not blame me for that, you can ask for the boons now. It has been the regular practice among the race of Raghu’s that they never fail to keep up their promises, if it needs, they willingly sacrifice their lives to keep up the promises. Oh! Devi, multitudes of sins cannot match a lie, as millions of tiny Gunja seeds cannot be compared with the mountains.  The Veda and scriptures, Manusmrithi emphasizes that truthfulness is the root of all virtues, I have sworn the above in the name of Rama, the Lord of Raghu who is the embodiment of beauty, truthfulness, kindness, and virtues.” Devi Kaikeyi smiled at heart thinking that her conversation with the King is moving in the right direction as she was desired, she has opened up the subject matter at a convenient moment.

Chapter – 27– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kaikeyi prepares for a pleasant conversation with the King

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Mune, Devi Kaikeyi after listening to the sweet words of the King rose from the floor, smiled vindictively, and began to decorate her body with various ornaments as if the lioness prepares to pounce at the deer. King mistook her actions, approached her passionately, and addressed her in great enthusiasm “Oh! Beloved one, we have achieved the fruitfulness of our lives, the subjects of the Kingdom are rejoicing at the upcoming coronation ceremony of Rama as the King of Ayodhya, the kingdom is all prepared for the grand festivals and ceremonies are yet to perform. Oh! Sulochani, I have decided to perform the crowning ceremony of Rama tomorrow, so do not wait too long, get yourself ready with exquisite ornaments and garments.” The sweet words of King ripped apart the heart of Devi Kaikeyi as if the ripened fruit get split open at the soft touch. Soon, she covered the hurt with a dramatic smile on her face, as if the wife of a thief does not show her grief watching her husband undergo punishments. Alas! the king was not able to trace the reaction of Queen Kaikeyi who was already persuaded by her tutor, the wicked hunch-back famous for her crookedness. Even though the King was extremely wise and intelligent in statesmanship, was ignorant in recognizing the heart of a woman, which resembles an unfathomable ocean. Devi Kaikeyi put a false smile on her face and approached the King with a graceful movement."

Chapter – 26– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Dhasharatha pacifies Devi Kaikeyi

King Dhasharatha touched her and spoke in a soft tone “Oh! Bhamini, what’s that so upsetting to you?” Devi Kaikeyi throw his hand, and glanced at him in a rage, she hissed like a serpent, she has two boons in her heart which was waiting to spell, and these two boons resembled the fangs of the venomous serpent. Unfortunately, King Dhasharatha mistook all her reactions as a part of the amorous sport. King Dhasharatha approached her with sweet words “Oh! Sulochani ! Oh! Sweet tongued lady! Oh! Sumukhi/beautiful faced one, Oh! Gajagamini/lady who has the gait of a female elephant, tell me what’s that bothering you? Oh! Priye/Dear one, who did cause harm to you? Whoever dared to hurt you must be waiting for their fate to get their head sieved off. Oh! Dear one, kindly tell me which pauper should be announced as the King, or which King should be exiled from the Kingdom? I am well capable to punish the person who hurt you so badly, even if it was immortal/deities. Where is your enemy? Oh! Pranapriye, you know me very well, Oh! Priye, your beautiful face is fascinating like the autumn full moon, I am that Chakora bird yearningly looking at you. Oh! Beloved one, my subjects, my family, and whatever I possess such as my sons, and my life are at your disposal. Oh! Chapter – 25– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Dhasharatha visits the Kopagriha to meet Devi Kaikeyi

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Mune, it was the late evening, King Dhasharatha arrived in the chamber of Devi Kaikeyi, resembled the love personified rushing towards the callousness personified as Kaikeyi.  Soon, the King came to know that Devi Kaikeyi is in the Kopagriha, not in her chamber, he was aghast, his feet were not willing to move further out of anxiousness. King Dhasharatha whose powerful arms were sought after by the deities for protection, and whose fame is widespread among the Kings of the neighboring country was troubled to move forward noticing the anger of his consort, all that was the result of unconquerable pleasure of physical attraction to Devi Kaikeyi. Oh! Mune, it is impossible to win over the cupid arrows of Manmatha, even for the King who had won several battles, courageously stood before the spears, swords, powerful weapons resembled thunderbolts. King Dhasharatha reluctantly approached the Kopagriha, and found Devi Kaikeyi in a miserable state on the floor, she was laying on the rough and cold stone floor, her hair was disheveled, all her ornaments were battered on the floor. Her untidy and faded garment was well suited for the state of her mind, resembled the upcoming calamity in the family, revealing her impending widowhood. King Dhasharatha moved closer to her and spoke in a sweet tone “Oh! Pranapriye, why are you so angry?”

Chapter – 24– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The Kingdom of Ayodhya prepares for the grand coronation ceremony of Rama as the King of Ayodhya

The men and women of the Kingdom were too busy to take notice of the impending calamities, all of them were engrossed in the preparation for the grand ceremony as in the palace. The people were entering and leaving the palace in large numbers, the joy-filled atmosphere of Ayodhya was beyond description. Rama’s childhood companions arrived in huge number to the fortress to congratulate Rama on the auspicious occasion, was received with great respect, enquired about the happiness, health, welfare of them and their families. Thus, Rama spends pleasurable time with his childhood companions, finally, they have received permission to retire while leaving the palace they converse with each other “Is there anyone amiable, affectionate, kind, and compassionate as Rama in this world? Whatever birth we may achieve due to our Karma, all that we should pray to remain a sincere servant of Sitapathi Lord Rama, let us pray to that Almighty Lord to grant us the boon to achieve Sitapathi Rama as our Lord in all our births, and the devotion and the pure love to Rama may flourish in us.” The people of Ayodhya considered themselves as fortunate to be in the Ramarajya, and wished to continue to be the servant of Rama in all their births, and prayed to Almighty. Alas! Devi Kaikeyi’s heart was completely drenched in resentment and agony. Sri Maharaj speaks ‘who is not get ruined by the association of the wicked people? Even the intellectuals lose their good sense in the association of vile.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Manthara advises Devi Kaikeyi to take shelter in the Kopagriha/chamber specially made for the women to stay while grieving

Chapter – 23– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Manthara advises Devi Kaikeyi to take shelter in the Kopagriha/chamber specially made for the women to stay while grieving

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Mune, the wicked hunch-back after setting the malicious plan in queen Kakikeyi’s mind, spoke to her fervently “Oh! Devi, take shelter in the Kopagriha/a special chamber to stay while the queens are unhappy and grieving, as I have advised, manage the whole affairs discreetly, do not believe the King and his sweet words easily.” Devi Kaikeyi praised the intelligence of the hunchback again and again, “Oh! Manthara, I have no trustworthy companion like you in this whole world. You have saved me from sinking in the deep ocean of grief, you have protected me from drowning, like the log in the river. If the Almighty Lord is favorable to me, he would fulfill my wishes tomorrow, Oh! Dear, I will protect you like an apple of my eyes in all my life.” Thus, Devi Kaikeyi repeatedly praised the shrewdness of Manthara and retired to the Kopagriha. The scheme resembled the seed, which was conceived by the servant maid Manthara served the purpose of heavy downpour, on the soil like the mind of Devi Kaikeyi, the water like the willingness of the queen to dance to the tune of Manthara’s words were already deep-rooted in the mind of the queen, began to sprout with the desire to ask for two boons, such as performing the coronation of Bharatha as the King of Ayodhya, and exile Rama to the woods, which was well enough to bear the fruit of calamities in the royal family. Devi Kaikeyi entered in the dark and untidy chamber/Kopagriha with a heart full of resentment, and lay on the floor. Alas! it was her bad luck, she was destined to take pleasure in the luxuries of the Kingdom, unfortunately, she was betrayed by her own wicked mind to take shelter in the dark and gloomy chamber, while the whole palace and the Kingdom were rejoicing at the upcoming coronation of Rama as the King of Ayodhya. Alas! nobody was aware of the conspiracy of Devi Kaikeyi and Manthara conceived together.”

Chapter – 22– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Manthara insists the queen Kaikeyi to ask for the boon promised by the King

Devi Kaikeyi replied “Oh! Manthara, I shall sincerely follow your suggestions, if needed I would throw myself into well, or even I would forsake my son and husband. Oh! Lady, if you are giving me a bit of advice to get rid of my anguish and grief, why should I refrain from following it?” Manthara realized that the sacrificial animal is already before her, all that she needs to pierce it with the knife, the queen Kaikeyi who resembled the sacrificial animal nibbling on the grass, without knowing the impending danger. Devi Kaikeyi was listening to the most agreeable words of Manthara, although it would heave the queen to painful consequences. Manthara enthusiastically served the queen with the devious plans as if feeding on honey mixed with the poison, she continued to speak “Oh! Devi, you have detailed to me about an interesting incident that took place several years ago and told me about a couple of promises given to you by the King, whether you remember it or not. Oh! Devi, it is the right moment to get your desires fulfilled, ask for the boon promised to you by the King, and get rid of the pain and anguish. Oh! Devi, ask the King to perform the coronation of Bharatha as the King of Ayodhya, and exile Rama to the woods, thus steal the happiness of all the queens. Oh! Devi, remember my word, do not ask for a boon, until and unless the King swear on Rama and promises to offer them, or he may change from his words. Oh! Devi, make sure our plans get succeeded before the daylight arrives, so cherish my words dearer than your life.”

Chapter – 21– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Manthara influences Queen Kaikeyi to follow her advice

Devi Kaikeyi spoke passively “I have not committed sin towards anyone during my lifetime, I wonder I can’t even imagine what was the reason for the troubles mounted upon us all of a sudden. I would prefer to spend the rest of my life in my father’s Kingdom, instead of serving Devi Kausalya and the royal family.  No one would prefer to live with an enemy, even if it has all the luxuries of heaven, instead death would be appropriate.” Devi Kaikeyi continued to pour out her grief and anguish to the wicked hunch-back, who enjoyed every bit of it, began to speak as a well-wisher “Oh! Devi, do not give up, do not speak while you are grieving or angry, you will get back all your happiness and good fortune, and whoever plotted against you, and caused grief to you will reap the fruit of their misdeeds. Oh! Lady, ever since I have heard of the coronation of Rama as the King of Ayodhya, I have lost my appetite and sleep in the night, I have consulted with an astrologer, he assured me with a positive prediction that Bharatha shall be the King of Ayodhya. Oh!Bhamini/virtuous one, I shall advise you,  if you follow my suggestions sincerely, you may succeed to regain your fortune and happiness, the King must have certain obligations towards you too.”

Chapter – 20– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Manthara succeeds in her devious plans to manipulate the mind of Devi Kaikeyi

Manathara spoke vehemently “You would be like the unfortunate Vinatha who was persecuted by Kadhru, the mother of serpent race, in the same manner, Devi Kausalya would dictate you, treat you as her servant after the coronation ceremony of Rama as the King of Ayodhya. Finally, Bharatha would be thrown into prison and tortured for no reason, and Lakshman would serve the newly crowned King Rama.” Devi Kaikeyi, daughter of Kaikeya shriveled listening to the most horrific predictions of Manthara after coronation of Rama, she could not utter a word out of anxiousness, her body quivered like the plantain tree, drenched in perspiration and agony. The wicked hunch-back, bit her tongue looking at the pathetic state of the queen, understood her traitorous act worked very well on Devi Kaikeyi, the way she has portrayed Bharatha and the queen had shaken the world before the queen. Manthara continued to fill the ears of Devi Kaikeyi with the miserable stories of the queens in the royal families and comforted the queen to be courageous and fight for her right. At last, Manthara succeeded in her plan to change the mind of Devi Kaikeyi completely, the queen has mistaken the heron as a swan, considered Manthara as a loyal servant, and praised her intelligence “Oh! Manthara, whatever told are absolutely right, I have been witnessing the bad omens for the last few days, my right part of the limb is trembling, I have been troubled by nightmares for the past few days, but I didn’t mention it to you. Oh! Manthara, I did not dream of anyone devious against me, I am innocent by nature, I cannot distinguish a friend and foe.”

The wicked hunch-back Manthara who is skilled in creating trouble discreetly influenced the queen Devi Kaikeyi with several mischievous stories related to the wives of Kings who were victimized in the families,  and the stories of jealousy and crookedness among the women in the royal families. It was unfortunate, Devi Kaikeyi kept great trust in sinful Manthra who continued aggressively “Oh! Devi, it is strange that you are not aware of the upcoming coronation ceremony of Rama as the King of Ayodhya. What do you know about the happenings in the Kingdom? Even the dull people know what’s happening around them, and know what’s good or bad, the preparation for the ceremony has been begun from the last fortnight, alas! you came to know about the ceremony from me today. Oh! Devi, I get my food and clothing from serving you, so I have spoken the truth to you, and you can’t blame me for that. If I speak lie to you, that would be awful, Almighty God will punish me. Anyways, it was God’s willing, the ceremony of coronation of Rama as the King of Ayodhya was disposed of, and He has sown the seeds of your misfortune. Oh! Devi, I swear to God and affirm you that you have been discarded from the royal family, like the fly from the milk. Oh! Lady, the coronation ceremony of Rama would change the status of you and your son Bharatha, both would remain as a servant in the family, sometimes you may be allowed to live in the fortress, otherwise not.”
