Chapter – 42– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Ravana orders to throw out Vibheeshana and the elderly minister Malyavan from the assembly

Vibheeshana spoke fervently “Oh! Ravana, I shall repeatedly prostrate before you, kindly leave your arrogance and pride, and worship Lord of Kosala. Our grandfather Sage Pulasthya has sent this message to you through one of his disciples. Oh! Dear brother, make use of this auspicious opportunity.” Ravana had a wise and elderly minister named Malyavan who was immensely delighted to hear the pious words of Vibheeshana. Malyavan spoke “Oh! Prabho, your elder brother is an ornament of wisdom, kindly follow the words of Vibheeshana that would bring all the auspiciousness to you.” Ravana shrieked in rage “These two fools are praising my enemy in my own assembly, is there anyone to throw them out of my sight?” The elderly minister Malyavan felt humiliated, immediately went out of the assembly. Vibheeshana continued to pray before Ravana with folded hands “Oh! Dear brother, the Puranas and Veda highly emphasize that goodness and evilness exist in all the Jeeva, wisdom brings prosperity and welfare, and immoral deeds bring constant suffering and grief. Oh! Brother, at this moment, you are dominated by evilness, hence you consider enemies as friends, and vice versa. I shall tell you the truth, Devi Sita represents Kalarathri/darkest hours of the night, your fondness for Devi Sita would bring the destruction of an entire demon clan.”

Chapter – 40– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Vibheehana’s advice to Ravana

The ministers spoke “Oh! Prabho, as long as a minister, preceptor, and physician speak pleasant words, it would remove the trepidations, ignorance, and fear of illnesses and death.” It was a grave situation before Ravana, but the ministers were praised his might and overlooked the upcoming danger. Vibheeshana who has thoroughly sensed the situation bowed before Ravana and prostrated at his feet. Vibheeshana began to speak “Oh! Lord, you have asked the opinion of ministers, hence I take the opportunity to express my views, Oh! Brother, whoever seeks welfare, fame, wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune, while living on the Earth and afterlife should not set their eyes on a stranger’s wife, like the moon on the fourth night of Lunar month. Oh! Prabho, whoever hostile to living beings, even if he is the Lord of fourteen spheres would meet destruction. No one will speak good about a person, even though he is an ocean of virtues and brilliant, has a little bit of greed in him.”

Prabho, kindly leave your stubbornness, utilize some safety measures before the Ramabana devour the frog-like demons.” Ravana who is arrogant and foolish by nature gave out a deafening laugh and spoke sarcastically “Oh! Devi, it is true that women are timid by nature, they are weak and get anxious even on the auspicious occasion. If the host of Vanaras enter in the city would become the feast for the demons, the guardian of fourteen spheres gets frightened of my valor, how ridiculous is that my wife is anxious about my enemies?” Ravana embraced Devi Mandodhari affectionately and left to the Assembly Hall. Mandodhari felt troubled at heart and thought that the fate of her beloved Lord has turned against him. As soon as Ravana was taken a seat on the majestic throne, the news has arrived from his emissaries that the enemies have reached on the other side of the ocean. Ravana sought the opinion of illustrious Ministers who were laughed out and spoke “Oh! Prabho, you need not worry at all, you have skillfully conquered all the deities and demons, hence do not get anxious about the humans and Vanaras who are naturally weak compared to us.”

Prabho, Devi Sita spend her days and nights contemplating upon your lotus feet, uttering your sacred name ‘Ram Ram Ram’, absorbed in envisaging your marvelous form in the shrine of her mind and closing her eyes as the doors of the shrine, head hung down staring at her feet, finding no way to escape from the grief of separation from you. Oh! Prabho, while I was leaving Ashokavatika, Devi Sita handed me this precious Choodamani to deliver to you.” Lord Rama took the Choodamani thoughtfully from Hanuman, and kept it close to his chest, and shed tears. Hanuman continues with tears “Oh! Prabho, Devi Janaki uttered the following words in tears”, kindly listen to Devi Sita’s message “I shall prostrate before the lotus feet of Lord Sri Ramachandra, and his younger brother, Oh! Dheenabandhu, Oh! Pranatharththihara, I have devoted to you with mind, word, and deed, then why did you abandon me? Oh! Prabho, I admit my fault, I did not leave the mortal coil immediately after I have got separated from you. Oh! Prabho, it was the agony of separation from you prevented me from leaving the mortal coil, the grief of separation from you torturing me like flames, the deep sighs are the wind that rejuvinates the flames and my body as a heap of cotton ball burning in the flames, that would have been consumed my physical body, but the longing to see your marvelous form causes my eyes drenched in tears, and it prevents the flames of grief devour my physical body.”  Hanuman speaks “Oh! Prabho, you are the savior of the distressed soul, and Devi Janaki is in utter grief and agony, hence I need not speak about it further.”

Hanuman took a deep plunge in the ocean water, and got rid of the exhaustion, assumed a minuscule form and appeared before Devi Sita, and stood before Jaganmatha Janakanandhini with folded hands and spoke “Oh! Mother, kindly be gracious, give me any one of your beloved possessions to deliver to Lord of Raghu.” Immediately, Devi Sita removed the ornament adorned on her hair /Choodamani, and handed cheerfully to Hanuman, and spoke “Oh! Vayuputhra, Oh! Dear son, convey my salutation and loving inquiries to Lord Raghu. My beloved Lord is omniscient, who is all-pervasive, ocean of mercy, protector of distressed souls, yet pass on my message to protect me from the grief and sufferings. Oh! Son, kindly remind the incident of Jayantha who is the son of Lord Indra, have disguised as a crow and pecked on my feet, and keep reminding the might of his arms that are well capable to destroy the enemies, if my beloved Lord did not make a visit in a month, he can’t see me alive. Oh! Dear son, how can I protect my life from the mighty demon Ravana, your mere appearance brought me intense relief from the grief, now the time has arrived for your return, I have to continue the days and night of weariness.”

Chapter – 27– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Hanuman burned down the entire city of Lanka except the fortress of Vibheeshana

At that moment, the Lord Vayu with all his Maruthganas immensely contributed to the purpose of Hanuman who roared and laughed out boisterously, increased the size of his body to a great extent, stood close to the sky. He darted from one palace to another at a great speed with the fire on the tail, in this way set fire in the entire city of Lanka. The people were panic-struck fled to different directions aimlessly, the enormous flames engulfed the city, all that heard of cries of the demons “Oh! Father, Oh! Mother, who will save us from this danger? He is not a Vanara, it is the deity in the form of a Vanara, as a result of humiliating a noble- soul caused us to burn in the flames as if there is no wise Master in the City of Lanka.” Shortly Hanuman burned the whole city of Lanka, except the fortress of Vibeeshana. Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Bhavani, Hanuman was unperturbed, because he was the emissary of Lord Sri Ramachandra who has created the Fire. Thus, Hanuman burnt the whole city of Lanka into ashes, and took shelter in the cool waters of the ocean.”

Chapter – 26– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– The demons set fire on the tail of Hanuman caused chaos in the city of Lanka

Ravana spoke wickedly “You know, Vanaras are fond of their tail, they take immense pride in it, so set fire on his tail, add some oiled rags on his tail and set fire, the Vanara will return to its Master without its tail bring shame to him. So that I could see his Master’s might as well.” Hanuman smiled at heart and thought “Goddess Sarada played her trick on the tongue of Ravana and it would be helpful for me.” Soon the demons brought ragged clothes dipped in oil, tied around the tail of Hanuman, as soon as they began to put hands on the tail of Hanuman, it started to grow bigger and bigger in size, thus the ghee, oil, clothes were become not enough, they started to feel the scarcity of the materials to set fire on the tail of Hanuman who playfully kept increasing the length of his tail. The people of Lanka assembled around the huge Vanara and took pleasure in physically abusing him. They set fire on the tail of Hanuman, took him all over the city accompanied by drumbeats, and several demons. Hanuman looked at his tail that was enough to set fire in the whole city, slipped out of the hands of the demons, leaped on the golden fortresses and stunning pleasure gardens at a great speed which caused chaos among the demons.

Hanuman speaks “Oh! Dhashanan, leave your pride and arrogance, that is the Thamasik nature could contribute ignorance, eventually push the Jeeva into extreme agony and sufferings, contemplate upon Lord Sri Ramachandra who is Lord of Raghu's, extremely kind and compassionate to his devotees.” Thus, Hanuman gave lectures on Bhakti, Gnana, and Vairagya were laughed out by Ravana, and spoke arrogantly “Oh! Vanara, we have found a wise monkey in our assembly, your death is hanging above your head which made you speak wise words, Oh! Wicked Vanara, you will see what’s going to happen with you for the humiliation and your advice to me.” Hanuman retorted “I could clearly perceive that you are under illusion, no one can protect you.” Ravana shrieked annoyingly “Who is there to kill this Vanara?” Soon haughty demons from different directions rushed to Hanuman, that very moment Vibheeshana hurried with his ministers to the assembly, bowed before Ravana, and spoke “Oh! Lord of demons, Oh! Bhratha, killing a messenger is against the statecraft, an emissary of the opponent should not be killed, can be punished in different ways.” All cheered at the opinion of Vibheeshana, “This is great knowledge.” Ravana haughtily replied, “Then, disfigure the Vanara and send him back to his Master.”

Hanuman speaks “Oh! Dhashanan, surrender to the supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra who is Pranathapala/protector of the distressed souls, Karunasindhu/ocean of mercy, Raghunayaka/Lord of Raghu's, Kharari/slayer of demon Khara, he will forgive you and protects you. Oh! Ravana, contemplate upon that supreme Lord Rama and enjoy worldly pleasure as the King of Lanka. The glory of your grandfather Sage Pulasya is the untainted moon, do not be a speck in that moon, leave your arrogance and ignorance, contemplate upon that Lord Rama. Oh! Surari, a beautiful woman adorned in various precious ornaments all over the body, but without clothes does not look attractive. The fortune, happiness, wealth, fame, richness of a Jeeva who has no faith in Lord Sri Ramachandra would leave after some time, though it stays for a while, like the rivers that have no perennial source of water gets dried up without rain showers. Oh! Dhashanan listens to me carefully, I promise you, there is no deity that will protect you if you turn hostile against Lord Rama, an enemy of Lord Rama can’t get protected from thousands of Lords Bhrama, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shankara.”

Hanuman spoke graciously “Oh! Dhashanan, I am the emissary of that supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra who is unconquerable, capable to defeat all the animate and inanimate things in this Universe, you have abducted his beloved consort, Devi Sita, in his absence. Oh! Ravana, I know your might thoroughly, you had a conflict with Sahasrabhahu and Vali.” Ravana laughed out scornfully at Hanuman who spoke thoughtfully, “Listen, Dhashanan, I have destroyed your pleasure garden as all other monkeys do, I ate the fruits from the garden because I was hungry. Oh! Lord, who does not love their life? I am not different from anyone, your army of demons attacked me, hence I had to repay what they deserve the best to protect myself from death. Oh! Ravana, your son Meghanatha fastened me with the Bhramasthra, I am not ashamed of it at all, I am always keen to serve my supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra. Oh!, Mighty Ravana, I request you with joined palms, do not keep enmity with Lord Rama, give up your arrogance and heed to my words. At this moment, you have to think about the welfare of your clan, get rid of your ignorance, and surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Rama,  get rid of your fear and anxiousness. The Supreme Lord Rama will not leave his devotees in distress, do not antagonize with him, he represents Yama who devours the animate and inanimate in the Universe. It is my sincere request to you to give up your haughtiness, and return Devi Sita safely back to Lord Rama.”

Dhashanan’s boisterous laugh echoed all over the palace watching the mighty Vanara before him, soon the thought of the death of his younger son Akshakumara pushed him gloomy. Ravana spoke haughtily “Oh! Vanara, who are you? Why did you destroy the entire pleasure garden? Haven’t heard my might yet? Who prompted you to do such mayhem in the Ashokavatika? Why did you kill the multitudes of the army of demons? You are exceptionally brave, Oh! Fool, aren’t you fear of death?” Hanuman spoke passionately “Oh! Dhashanan, listen to me carefully, ponder over the supreme Lord Rama whose inseparable Maya creates the multitudes of Universe and its living and non-living things, Oh! Dhashanan, ponder over the supreme Lord Rama who is the Lord of Lords, represents Lord Bhrama, the creator, Lord Vishnu the preserver and Lord Rudra the destroyer, and carry out the functions of the Universe, Oh! Ten-headed demon, ponder over the supreme Lord Rama who is the essence of thousand hooded Adishesha carries the entire weight of all the Bhramanda on his hood. Oh! Dhashanan, ponder over the supreme Lord Rama who incarnates on the Earth to reinstate Dharma, provides welfare and happiness to the noble souls and Mahatmas with his passionate sport, and destroys the wicked demons like you. Oh! Dhashanan, ponder over the supreme Lord Sri Rama who broke the powerful bow of Lord Shambhu in the assembly of King Janaka, thereby crushed your pride. Oh! Wicked, ponder over the supreme Lord Rama who has matchless valor, killed the mighty demons Khara, Dhooshana and Thrishirass, and multitudes of your army.”

Chapter – 21– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Meghanath fastened Hanuman with the Bhramasthra and brought him in the assembly of Ravana

Hanuman and Meghanath of equal strength fought each other for a while, finally, Meghanath invoked Bhramasthra aiming at Hanuman. Kapipathi thought “If I did not surrender to the powerful weapon Bhramasthra, the glory of the Astra would vanish in the air, hence I should surrender to it whatever may come I should not let it happen.” Meghanath shot the Bhramasthra against Hanuman, which caused mayhem on the battlefield, eventually, Hanuman fell unconscious. Soon, all the demons gathered around Hanuman, tied him with the Nagapasha and whatever bark of trees available around him, that made the Bhramasthra instantly retract its power with the touch of impure materials, but Hanuman pretended himself unconscious, immediately several haughty demons carried him with great enthusiasm and marched towards the assembly of Ravana. Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Bhavani, do you think the Bhramasthra hurt Hanuman, the ardent devotee, and emissary of Lord Sri Ramachandra who removes the bondage of the Jeeva, and protects from the repeated cycles of births and miseries of worldly existence? Hanuman graciously accepted the Bhramasthra invoked against him and let it bound him for a while, as a service to that supreme Lord Ramachandra.” The demons were extremely delighted to find that the Vanara was under control, captured, and brought it safely to the assembly. Thus, Hanuman arrived in the majestic assembly of Ravana which was beyond description. The deities stood in the assembly with their hands folded, without blinking their eyes looked at Ravana and were waiting for his order to accomplish. Hanuman stood fearless before the assembly of Ravana, like the King of birds remain unperturbed in the midst of venomous serpents.

Chapter – 18– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Hanuman receives blessings from Devi Sita

Hanuman spoke “Oh! Mother, do you know the Vanaras does not possess might or valor or wisdom, it was the grace of supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra, even Garuda swallow the snake.” Devi Sita felt gratified listening to the words of Hanuman which was full of love and devotion to Lord Rama, and was abundantly praising the might, valor of the Lord, she was thoroughly understood Hanuman is the fervent devotee of Rama and blessed him “Oh! Dear son, may you live long! You are the repository of virtue and valor. May you live long without Jara/aging, Vyadhi/illness, and Bhaya/fear and anxiousness! May that Lord of Raghu shower an abundance of grace upon you!” The nectar-like blessing of Devi Sita fell into the ears of Hanuman “May the supreme Lord be gracious to you!’ he was transported into a state of ecstasy, repeatedly prostrated before Devi Sita, and spoke with folded hands “Oh! Mother, I have achieved all that I have desired with the blessings of you. Oh! Mother, I feel so hungry watching the luscious fruits in the garden.” Devi Sita spoke worriedly “Oh! Hanuman spoke “Oh! Mother, the cluster of demons are moth before the powerful flame like the arrows of Lord Raghu. Oh! Mother, kindly be fearless, you will see the destruction of demons before your eyes. If Lord of Raghu was aware of your existence in the city of Lanka, you would not face these hardships in your life, Oh! Mother, the moment Lord Raghu’s powerful arrows like Sun pierce the hearts of the demons, they would vanish like the darkness in the night. Oh! Mother, I am all prepared to take you to Lord Rama, I promise upon Lord Rama, although I haven’t received any instructions from the Lord. Therefore, wait patiently for a few more days, till Lord of Raghu arrives with the multitude of Vanaras to Lanka. Oh! Mother, he will annihilate the entire clan of demons and take you to Ayodhya, you will see the illustrious Sage Narada and others would sing in praise of his glories.” Devi Sita spoke grimly “Oh! Son, all the Vanaras must be tiny as you, whereas the demons are mountain-sized, how did they confront the haughty demons?” Hanuman assumed his real mountain-sized form listening to the thoughtful speech of Mother Sita.  Hanuman majestically stood before Devi Sita, he has great stature and had the appearance of Mount Sumeru, eyes resembled fireballs, sharp nails, and vicious teeth, etc. Devi Sita assured herself that Hanuman is the essence of valor, might, and intelligence, soon he reduced his colossal form.

Chapter – 16– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Hanuman conveys the message of Lord Rama to Devi Sita

Hanuman spoke, “Oh! Mother, kindly control your grief, listen to the messages of Lord Raghupathi” while saying so, Hanuman could not control his tears, his voice was trailed. Hanuman conveyed the message of Rama “Oh! Sita, ever since I have been separated from you, everything seemed different to me, the fresh tender leaves look like the tongue of flame, the nights appear to me as utter dissolution, the cool moon rays scorching like the sunrays, the bed of lotus appears as a bed of spears, the raindrops feel like the hot oil. That beautiful nature was attractive to me once were turned as tormenting, the cool breeze carrying the rich fragrance of flowers appears as the hissing of the serpent. The grief shared with someone would reduce to some extent, alas! I have no one to speak to or no one can understand my pain of separation from you. The fact is that the love and affection shared between us causing intense grief, you can understand the pain very well, we both are sailing on the same ferry, my mind is always taking pleasure in your thoughts.” Devi Vaidhehi too absorbed in a deep love for Rama, forgot her body consciousness, after listening to the grief of Rama. Hanuman spoke solemnly “Oh! Mother, regain your consciousness, contemplate upon the lotus feet of Lord Rama, who is the delight of his devotees, contemplate upon the glorious legends of the Lord and get rid of your grief.”
