My beloved mother Devi Kausalaya too has advised me what is appropriate for the situation, I certainly wish to carry out her affectionate orders with utmost reverence. It is advisable to sincerely follow the advice of preceptor, parents, master, and closest companion for welfare and happiness. Whoever fails to perform one’s own duties and responsibilities would incur a load of sins. All the advice I have received from my preceptor and Mother Kausalya will do good to me, even though my heart is not fully convinced. Hence, kindly listen to my requests and advise me. Kindly forgive me for my presumption and courage to speak before the elders, the wise and learned won’t consider it is an act of virtueless when the other person is in extreme distress.”

Sage Vashishta spoke “Oh! Thatha/dear son, tell me who is fortunate than the King Dhasharatha who has attained virtuous children like Rama, Bharatha, Lakshman, and Shathrughna? King Dhasharatha was fortunate in all manner; hence it is not required to mourn for him. Oh! Dear Son, do not grieve over the demise of the King, and sincerely follow the command of the King. The King has bestowed the kinship to you, hence adore the Kingdom which was offered to you by your father, he has forsaken Rama who is dear as his life in order to keep up his promise to Devi Kaikeyi, ultimately, he has left his mortal coil at the pain of separation from Rama. The King loved his promises more than his life, and he always kept his word intact. Oh! Dear son, therefore follow the command of your father, it would provide all the goodness to your life. Do you remember, Sage Parashurama who followed the command of his father and taken away the life of his mother Devi Renuka, the whole world stands witness to it.  Do you remember, the legend of Puru the son of Yayathi who exchanged his youthfulness to his father, therefore whoever sincerely followed the command of parents will not incur sin or grief in their lives.”

Chapter – 162 – Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya pacifies Bharatha with her affectionate words

Devi Kausalya spoke affectionately after listening to the wise, innocent, artless words of Bharatha “Oh! My beloved son, Oh! Dear child, you have been beloved of Rama by word, mind, and deed. Oh! Child, Rama is dearer than your life for you, and the same with Rama too. Oh! Child, the moon which is famous for its cool rays may diffuse poison, and the snow famous for its chillness may emit fire, an aquatic creature may abandon water to survive, the knowledge of Athman/soul/ Oneness-in- all, may fail to remove the darkness of ignorance, in no case you would turn hostile to Rama. The people who believe that the plotting against Rama was conceived with your knowledge, won’t attain peace or happiness in their lives and not even in their dreams, finally, they will not achieve salvation from the repeated births/Samasarachakra as well.” Devi Kausalya embraced Bharatha tightly, her eyes overflown with tears, her love for Bharatha caused to trickle milk from her bosom. In this way, Bharatha and Devi Kausalya lamented each other. The preceptors Sage Vamadeva and Sage Vashishta followed by the illustrious ministers, summoned the respectable members, and Bhramins of the Kingdom. Sage Vashishta comforted Bharatha in many ways, describing various legends from scriptures and words full of wisdom appropriate to the situation.

Chapter – 161 – Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha’s passionate speeches to Mother Kausalya

Bharatha spoke fervently “ Oh! Mother, If I have involved in the plotting against Lord Sri Rama, let the Kingdom award me the fate of the Jeeva who is far from the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari and Lord Shambhu was worshiped by the Bhoothaganasa of dreadful appearance. Oh! Mother, if all that has happened with my approval, the sins of exchanging Vedas for monetary benefits, and thereby exploit the piousness earned, and the sinful deeds of false accusation, the fate of wickedness, deceitfulness, cruelty, and the fate of the people who are hostile to the beliefs, righteousness, and Veda, and the terrible sin of stealing the wealth, money, and possession of others, and illicit relationships with the wife of strangers, let all those sins fall upon me. Oh! Mother, If I have known the treacherous plan of my mother beforehand, let Lord Shambhu punish me with the sin of people who do not love the association of saints, Mahatmas, noble souls, ascetics, and virtuous, etc. Oh! Mother, If I was known to the deceitfulness of my mother, the fate of the people who do not strive to achieve the knowledge of ‘Athman’/soul/Bhramavichara, the people who do not worship Lord Sri Hari even after obtaining the rarest birth as a human falls upon me.  Oh! Mother, if I was involved in any of the plotting against my beloved brother Rama let the fate of the people do not worship Lord Sri Hari or Lord Mahadeva, abandon the Veda and Vedic rites, the people who spread false knowledge, and deceive the public with the false appearance fall upon me.”

Chapter – 159– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya details the incident to Bharatha, and regretting  not leaving her Prana/vital air at the separation of Rama

Devi Kausalya spoke softly “Oh! Dear son, the Lord of Raghu abandoned the palace, leaving all his ornaments and stately pleasure, attired in a saffron robe, left the palace with no grief or joy. He has accepted the life of a hermit gracefully. He left the palace cheerfully, comforted everyone with his pleasing smile and sweet words, he was neither happy nor sad while leaving to the forest. Devi Sita who is chaste and devoted at the lotus feet of Rama followed him to the woods. Lakshman who cannot be without Rama rushed to follow him, even though he was told to remain in the palace, thus Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita left to the woods. I have neither accompanied them to woods nor did not shed my mortal coil, all that happened before my eyes, even though I could not abandon my Prana. I am ashamed for my love to Rama, I did not leave my Prana watching him leaving to woods, I am ashamed of myself, the Lord of Raghu Rama should not have a mother like me, but your father knows how to live and die, I think my heart is harder than the rock that is why I am still bearing Prana in this body.”

Bharatha and Shathrughna proceeded to meet Devi Kausalya in her fortress, she was attired in a faded clothe, shrunken in grief, she looked pale and fragile, like the lovely celestial creeper battered by frost in the forest. Devi Kausalya rose on her and rushed to meet Bharatha, unfortunately, she could not make it, fell unconscious on the ground. Bharatha was shocked to witness the miserable state of his lovely mother, he prostrated at her feet and cried “Oh! Dear Mother, kindly show father to me. Where are my brothers Rama and Lakshman? Where is Devi Sita? Why was Devi Kaikeyi ended up in our world? Why did she give birth to me? Why can’t she remain barren? Why did she become an enemy to dear and near ones in this family? No one is miserable as me in these fourteen worlds. Oh! Dear Mother, you have been brought to this despicable situation by my mother Kaikeyi. My father attained the abode of Lord Indra, my beloved brother chief of Raghu left to the woods, I have become responsible for all these dismays taken place in the family, I have become answerable for the forest fire like sufferings and destruction in the Raghu clan.”

Chapter – 156– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Shathrughna smashed the hunch back of Manthara and shoved her in extreme agony

Bharatha lamented “The Almighty Lord ordained me to take birth as the son of an enemy of Rama, no one is sinful as me, hence it is worthless to comment about anything”. Shathrughna could not control his rage when he heard about the malicious plans of Devi Kaikeyi, but he was helpless. That very moment the hunch back Manthara entered the chamber, she was adorned in various precious ornaments all over her body, attired in the finest garment, the very sight of Manthara stirred anger in Shathrughna, like the ghee added to the fire, he rushed towards her and gave a hard kick on her hunch back, she fell flat on her face and shrieked in pain. Manthara’s hunch back was smashed, her face wounded badly, teeth were broken, and blood was oozing out of the wounds. Manthara cried in pain “What was I have done to you? Is this being the reward for my service to you?” Shathrughna who is the slayer of the enemy caught Manthara on her hair, and dragged her all through the chamber, Bharatha rushed to rescue her. The two brothers left the fortress of Devi Kaikeyi and proceeded to Mother Kausalya.

Chapter – 155– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha held Devi Kaikeyi responsible for the destruction of the Raghu clan

Bharatha spoke in utter grief “I have taken birth in the Sun race, to achieve King Dhasharatha as my father, and Rama, Lakshman and Shathrughna as my brothers, I have been born as a son to you. Oh! Wicked woman, why did not your heartbreak into pieces while conceiving this malicious plan against our family? While asking boons to my father, your conscious did not hurt you? Your tongue did not falter? Your mouth didn’t fill with maggot? How did my father trust you all his life? Definitely, the Almighty Lord must have taken away his good sense at the hours of his death. Even the creator has not been able to understand the mind of women which is full of sin, deceit, and vice. My father was virtuous, amiable, pious, and kind, how did he know your cunningness? How could he know the nature of a woman? Who is not fond of Lord of Raghu Rama, and considers him dear as life? After all these, you have considered Rama as your enemy. Oh! Sinful woman, be truthful, which species do you belong to? Whatever you are, daub your face with black ink, and keep yourself out of my sight.”

Chapter – 154– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The heated conversation between Bharatha and Devi Kaikeyi

Bharatha after listening to the exile of Rama, Devi Sita to the forest from Devi Kaikeyi, for a moment, he forgot the grief inflicted by the demise of his father, instantly he realized that he is responsible for all the disaster taken place in Ayodhya, and he is the root cause for all the evils. Devi Kaikeyi understood the distress of Bharatha, spoken words to comfort her son was more like the salt added to the wounds “Oh! Dear son, you are the King of Ayodhya, it is not the time for mourning. Your father has achieved the merit of his righteousness after death by achieving the abode of Lord Indra, while he was alive, he had enjoyed all the stately pleasures, in the way, while he was alive, he has achieved great fame, achieved the fruitfulness of human life, and afterlife he has achieved the celestial abode. Oh! Son, stop mourning over the death and happenings in Ayodhya, rule the Kingdom wisely, by taking good control over the safety and security of the Kingdom.” Bharatha felt extremely painful listening to the words of Devi Kaikeyi, it was like the blazing charcoal poured on the body. Bharatha shed tears in grief, and relieved a deep sigh, and cried out “Oh! Wicked woman, you have brought complete ruin to our family. If you have deep malice in your heart, why didn’t you kill me at birth? Oh! Sinful woman, you have ruined a tree to keep a leaf alive, you have drained the pond to nurture a fish.”

Devi Kaikeyi after listening to the affectionate inquiries of Bharatha about the whole family, the sinful woman began to weep in utter desolation and spoke words that pierced the heart of Bharatha with several arrows. Devi Kaikeyi spoke in shock “Oh! Dear son, I have accomplished everything for you, and poor Manthara was so helpful to me, unfortunately, the Almighty Lord has beaten our plans before it was turned out successful, King has departed to the abode of deities.” As soon as he heard the words spelled out of his father’s demise, Bharatha turned pale and overcame with extreme grief, like the elephant terrified at the sudden roarer of the lion. Bharatha fell on the ground and wept bitterly “Oh! Dear father, Oh! Dear father! you have entrusted me to take care of Rama.” He managed to raise from the floor and approached Devi Kaikeyi in tears “Oh! Mother, what was the reason for the sudden demise of my father?” Devi Kaikeyi straight away replied to her son about all that happened, like the poison injected into the veins, the wicked woman began to explain all that happened from the beginning till the end.

The people of Ayodhya met Bharatha, they prostrated before him and moved away silently without greeting a word, it was the same with Bharatha too, his mind was preoccupied and restless due to fear and grief, hence he could not ask about their welfare. The marketplaces and streets were empty as if the wildfire broke out engulfed the entire city from ten directions. Kaikeyi came to know about the arrival of Bharatha who is the delight of Raghu’s, soon she prepared a large decorated golden tray with the Mangaladhravya and earthen lamps to remove evil eyes on her son, she rejoiced at heart and waited impatiently at the entrance of her fortress. Bharatha was surprised to see his mother at the entrance of her fortress, while the entire palace wore a gloomy and wretched look, like the frost fallen on the fully blossomed lotus flowers, but she was extremely delighted to meet her son, resembled the Bhila woman set fire to the woods. As soon as Bharatha entered, she enquired in high spirits “How is everyone in my home?” Bharatha detailed everything about the welfare of his maternal uncle and family, further he enquired about the welfare of his father, mothers, brothers, and their wives, Kingdom and the subjects, etc. Bharatha enthusiastically shot several queries about the whereabouts and welfare of Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita.

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “ Oh! Mune, Bharatha was passing days full of anxiousness, inauspicious omens, and nightmares, at that exact moment the messengers have arrived and informed the order of the preceptor. Bharatha and Shathrughna worshiped Lord Ganesha and proceeded to Ayodhya. The horses tied to the chariot has the speed of the wind, it has crossed several unapproachable pathways, hills, beautiful mountains, rivers, and streams at ease, the beauty of nature didn't lure Bharatha’s heart, his mind was full of anxiousness thinking about what was the reason for the sudden call of the preceptor, every moment seemed like Yuga to him, his mind was unrest throughout the journey. Finally, they have entered the city of Ayodhya, soon all the evil omens have become visible to him, the crows cawed recalling inauspiciousness, the jackals and donkeys gave out a cry revealing the misfortunes, which pierced the heart of Bharatha. The pleasure gardens, lakes, streams, and ponds have lost their charm, the city gave out a dismal appearance. The birds, horses, and elephants were wretched as if caught under an evil spell. The people of the city of Ayodhya gave out a miserable appearance as if they have lost all their wealth and possessions.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – King Dhasharatha describes the legend of young hermit Shravan to Devi Kausalya

Chapter – 153– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Dhasharatha describe the legend of young hermit Shravan to Devi Kausalya

King Dhasharatha listening to most pleasant and agreeable words from Kausalya, half-opened his eyes and looked at her like the wretched fish got some sprinkle of water. He made an effort to sit on the floor and spoke in grief “Oh! Sumanthra, where is my beloved son Rama? Where are my Rama and Lakshman? Where is my beloved daughter-in-law Vaidhehi?” That night seemed so long for the King; it was not easy to watch for the people assembled before the King. Suddenly he remembered the curse of a blind hermit and began to describe them to Devi Kausalya.

The King described an incident that took place while he was young, went for a hunting expedition on the riverbank of Sarayu. It was the time of sunset, the King entered the dense forest following the trumpet of an elephant, heard the sound of the elephant splashing in the water. King aimed the arrow focusing at the place from where the sound has arrived, unfortunately, it was young hermit Shravan who went to fill the pitcher full of water in the pond. The arrow hit the target, King rushed to the spot and found the young hermit badly shot by the arrow, he was shocked, approached the hermit, but the young hermit was not anxious about his death at all, he was worried about his blind parents waiting to quench their thirst in the forest. The hermit requested the King to deliver the pitcher full of water to his parents and breathed for last. King Dhasharatha brought the pitcher of water to the elderly blind parents of Shravan and narrated the entire happenings to them. The elderly parents could not take the grief, wished to be close to the body of their son, in extreme grief the elderly parents pronounced a curse on the King that he would die at the grief of separation from his son. King cried out bitterly “Oh! Devi, what shall I gain with this body in the absence of my beloved children? I have already spent hours in the absence of my beloved Rama who is dear as my life. Oh! Janaki, Oh! Rama, Oh! Lakshman, you are the delight of Raghu’s clan, you are the source of the bliss of your father like the Chathaka yearn for the droplets of water from the Swathi star.”

Chapter – 152– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya’s wise advice to the King who was struggling to breathe

The city of Ayodhya was in chaos, after listening to the sudden cries of women from the royal palace, the people assembled at the gate of the palace dumbfounded as if the huge lightning fell upon a large number of birds nestled. The last breath of the King stuck on his throat, he struggled like a serpent lost its gem, all his senses stopped functioning like the dried cluster of lotus flowers in the absence of water. Devi Kausalya watched the King emaciated, gasping for breath, she understood that the sun of the solar race is all prepared to set, she regained her courage and began to speak in tears “Oh! My beloved Lord, the pain of separation from Rama is like a vast ocean, you are the captain in the ship like the Kingdom of Ayodhya which is boarded by your dear and near ones and your beloved subjects as passengers. Oh! Lord, we are hoping to cross the ocean of grief of separation from Rama, unless and until you gather some courage and patience it would be difficult for all. If you have not, the whole people of the Kingdom would get drowned in the ocean of grief. Oh! Lord, if you take my advice aptly, we will definitely see Rama, Lakshman, and Sita again.”

Chapter – 151– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The sudden cries of women assembled around the King reverberated in the palace

Sumanthra spoke “Oh! Rajan, Devi Sita could not speak a word in grief, she wanted to speak but she was overwhelmed with various emotions, her voice failed to come out of her throat, those beautiful eyes overflown with tears, and a sudden rush of grief ran through her limbs. Rama realized the heaviness of the situation, gestured the ferryman to take away the boat from the shore, and while I was watching helplessly, they drove to the opposite bank of river Ganga. I stood watching at them heavy heartedly, I couldn’t describe my anguish after watching the Lord of Raghu departed, and I have to rush back to convey his message.” At that moment Sumanthra put a sudden halt to his voice, could not speak due to extreme grief of separation from Rama. Suddenly, King fell with a large thud on the floor and became unconscious, due to extreme exhaustion and anguish he trembled like the fish that had tasted the first few droplets of rainwater. The queens surrounded by the King taken aback, wept bitterly watching the miserable state of the King. How can I describe the misfortune that taken place in the clan of Raghu? The sudden sound of cries from queens reverberated in the atmosphere.

Sumanthra spoke “Oh! Rajan, I shall detail the pleasant words uttered by Rama “Oh! Mahathma, we shall be happy and safe in the woods with the blessings of our father, and we shall come back safely after fourteen years of life in the woods to behold the lotus feet of our father. Kindly take good care of my mothers, and convey our humble salutations at their lotus feet. Kindly convey our humble salutations at the lotus feet of our preceptors and request them to take care of Lord of Ayodhya, King Dhasharatha not grieving in the absence of his children. Oh! Mahathma, kindly addresses the subjects of Ayodhya not to grieve in my absence and advises them whoever ensures the happiness of King Dhasharatha is my friend. Oh! Mahathma, when Bharatha returns from his maternal uncle’s home, kindly convey my message to him, not to leave righteousness and rule and Kingdom and its subjects wisely, always remember the welfare, and happiness of the people as his priority, and cherish the subjects of Ayodhya by word, mind, and deed. Kindly, convey my message to Bharatha to take good care of all three mothers, and serve parents and kinsmen till the last day, and finally take good care of the King and do not let him grieve on my account.” Sumanthra continued “Oh! Rajan, Rama pacified Lakshman who has intervened angrily, and advised me not to reveal those harsh words uttered in childishness by Lakshman before you.” Sage Tulsidas makes every effort to watch the Lord of Ayodhya in bliss.
