Chapter – 197– Sri Ramacharitha Manas –
Bala Kanda– The performance of sacred thread ceremony of the children and the
life in the hermitage of Sage Vashishta
Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Mune, the
Sacchidhanandaroopa Paramathma took a seat on the lap of Dhasharatha was too
restless, and slipped out of his lap too often, running all over the courtyard
with the mouthful of curd rice, that was dribbling out of the mouth. The
splendid childhood sports of that supreme Bhramam were highly praised by
Goddess Sarada, Adhishesha, Lord Shambhu, and Vedas. The unfortunate Jeeva does
not take pleasure in the childhood sport of that Paramathma Parambhramam. Gradually,
the children attained boyhood, the preceptor Vashishta advised the King to arrange
the sacred thread ceremony of the four children. Immediately after the sacred
thread ceremony, the children were assigned to attend studies on Astra and
Shastra under the guidance of family priest Sage Vashishta in his hermitage.
In a short period of time, the children had achieved vast knowledge from
various branches of studies, thus the supreme Bhramam who is the essence of
Veda, Vedanga, Agamashasthras, wisdom, virtues, etc. dutifully attended the
studies in the hermitage of Sage Vashishta. During their stay in the hermitage,
they enthusiastically engaged in various sports, wielded in bow and arrow,
imitating the role of King, etc. The four youths wielded in bow and arrows,
attractive limbs and mesmerizing appearance enticed the entire Universe, living
and non-living things, whenever they walk on the royal pathways, all the eyes
were set on the children, the women and men stood motionless watching the
mesmerizing beauty of the youths.”
