Chapter – 334– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Bala Kanda– King Janaka eulogizes the splendor of Rama

 

Kosalapathi King Dhasharatha and Janaka remained in the embrace of each other, showered great respect and love to the King Janaka and his entire family and relatives. King Janaka bowed before the Sages of Kosala, and received their blessings, he embraced sons-in-law with great affection and felt each of them are the essence of virtue, beauty, amiability, and goodness. King Janaka with folded hands spoke to Rama in a sweet tone “Oh! Rama, how can I describe your splendor, Oh! Prabho, you reside in the lotus-like hearts of Sages, Rishis, and Mahatmas, Oh! Prabho, you reside as Swan in the Manasarovar-like heart of Lord Shambhu. Oh! Prabho, the virtuous and fortunate Jeeva, Yogis, undertake extreme austerities/Shamadhamadhi and Tapasya, and get rid of impurities of Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, and constantly contemplate and meditation upon you and perceive the omnipresent Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, immerses in the Bhramanandha/supreme bliss. Oh! Prabho, you are that all-pervasive Bhramam which is indestructible Purusha, free from afflictions, pure, eternal bliss is beyond the perception of mind and intellect.”

The deities showered flowers, the celestial Apsaras danced to the melodious music of Gandharvas, the sounds of the divine music instruments reverberated in the sky, the Lord of Ayodhya, Lord Sri Ramachandra set forth to the Kingdom of Ayodhya. King Dhasharatha approached the Brahmins, King Janaka, and Kushadhwaja and humbly requested them to retire to their city, the affection shared by the two Kings were beyond description, King Janaka was not willing to leave the latter, King Dhasharatha spoke affectionately “Oh! Rajan, kindly returns to your kingdom, you have already followed a long way, kindly return with your councilors and twice-born to your palace.” King Dasaratha stood before King Janaka with folded hands, tears running down the cheeks, the King of Vidheha with folded hands spoke the nectar-like words “Oh! Rajan, I have no words to describe your modesty, you have showered great honor to us.”  While the bride and groom were proceeding to Ayodhya,  Dhasharatha offered an abundance of gifts and generous contributions to the mendicants on his way, everyone was praising the glories of King of Ayodhya and Lord Rama and returned to their city.

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Mune, soon marvelously decorated palanquins were brought before the King, the whole family overwhelmed with various emotions, the auspicious moment has arrived to send off the daughters to their in-law’s home. King Janaka and Kushadhwaja, contemplated upon Lord Ganesha who is the remover of obstacles and his consorts Ridhdhi and Siddhi, and led the princesses to the stunningly decorated palanquins, and affectionately made them be seated on it. King Janaka repeatedly advised the daughters about the duties and responsibilities of a married woman, and the customary rites in the families. Devi Sita was accompanied by several female and male attendants of her favorites and trustworthy to Ayodhya. The people of Mithila could not control tears watching the princesses leaving the city forever, good omens were appeared from all directions, thus the brides were followed by a large number of Bhramins, wise councilors, and King Janaka and King Kushadhwaja began the journey, shortly the divine music reverberated in the air, the people of groom prepared to leave in chariots, elephants, horses, and several carts. King Dhasharatha offered an abundance of contributions to the Bhramanas assembled in the fortress, prostrated before them and received their blessings,  placed the dust particles from the lotus feet of the Bhramanas on his head, contemplated upon elephant-faced Lord Ganesha and set out for his journey, there were several auspicious omens were visible before him.”

Chapter – 331– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Bala Kanda– Devi Sita prepares to leave the Kingdom of Mithila

 

The men and women of Vidheha, the female companions of Devi Sita overcame the pain of separation from their beloved princes, the city of Vidheha sunk into deep grief at the departure of daughters and sons-in-law of King Janaka. The parrots and Manias nurtured in golden cages, was lovingly taken care of by the Princesses were cried out in anguish “where are the daughters of Vidheha, haven’t seen them, where are they?” every single creature of the Mithila experienced the pang of separation from the princesses, hence it is difficult to describe the state of the human being. King Janaka and his younger brother Kushadhvaja returned to the palace, tears overflowing, after sending off their daughters and sons-in-law. Although King Janaka was known for his dispassion, could not control his tears watching Devi Sita leaving the city of Mithila, all that courage gathered disappeared in the air. King Janaka embraced Devi Sita, shortly the crest of wisdom toppled at the sudden rush of emotion, the wise councilors of assembly cautioned the King that it is not the moment to shed tears, soon the King regained his lost courage, repeatedly embraced his daughters, and ordered the men to bring the stunningly decorated palanquins.

Chapter – 330– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Bala Kanda– Devi Sunayana offers Devi Sita in hand to Rama and praising the splendor of her son-in-law

 

Devi Sunayana handed Devi Sita to Rama and spoke with folded hands “Oh! Son, I shall offer my lovely daughter to you, she is wise and virtuous, she is dear as my life, and to the whole family members, she is cherished by the entire city and beloved of her father. Oh! Lord of Tulsi/Tulaseesa, kindly consider her meekness and affection and treat her as your sincere servant. Oh! Rama, you are too kind and compassionate to your devotees, you are the Choodmani of the wise, you are approachable with pure love and devotion, and you always highly praise the qualities in your devotees, you are the wish-fulfilling creeper/Kalpatharu to your devotees, you are the ocean of mercy, and you remove the impurities in your devotees.” Saying so, Devi Sunayana prostrated before Lord Rama as if her speech has lost due to the sudden rush of love for her son-in-law. Rama after listening to the passionate speech of Devi Sunayana lifted her from the floor, honored her with folded hands, sought permission from his mother-in-law, and repeatedly offered salutation to her. Rama, Bharatha, Lakshman, and Shathrughna, offered salutations to mothers-in-law, and received their blessing, thus Lord of Raghu took leave with his brothers. The queens were overwhelmed with various emotion, contemplated upon the marvelous form of Rama, regained their self and called out for their daughters, embraced them again and again. The bride and groom departed, the queens followed them for a short while, remained in the embrace of their daughters, the overflowing emotions and love between the mothers and daughters were difficult to put into words, Queens parted ways followed by their female attendants as if the calf separated from the cow.

The arrival of four charming brothers who are the ocean of beauty, spread extreme bliss among the people inside the palace of Janaka. The women behold the beauty of the princes were transported to a state of ecstasy, the beautiful ladies, and mothers-in-law assembled with Mangaladhravya, earthen lamps, and gifts before the princes, they repeatedly prostrated before the lotus feet of Rama, fascinated by the beauty of Lord Rama soon retired from his sight in utter shyness. The affection of mothers-in-law for their sons-in-law was beyond description, they adorned the attractive limbs of the princes with the rich aromatic mixture of turmeric and sandalwood paste, and invited them for an elaborate bath, after that the princes were served with the sumptuous meal of Shadrasa affectionately. At the right moment, Rama spoke amiably to mothers-in-law “Oh! Mothers, our father is prepared to leave to the Kingdom of Ayodhya, hence he sent us to bade farewell to you. Oh! Mothers, kindly give us permission to leave the city of Mithila with a cheerful mind, and kindly consider us as your own children.” The ladies assembled were become inconsolable, mothers-in-law overwhelmed with various emotions, could not utter a word in grief. The mothers hurried to their daughters, took their girls close to their chest, and kissed on their forehead, while handing them to Lord, they passionately spoke in tears.

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Mune, the queens were reluctant to leave their daughters from their lap, it was the exact moment, Rama gladly entered into the palace of Janka, followed by his three brothers to take away the brides to Ayodhya. A huge crowd people of Mithila assembled in the courtyard to witness the charming personalities of the four brothers, they spoke in a soft tone “The guests of King Janaka is leaving today, King of Vidheha had made all arrangements for their safe journey, let us devour the beauty of these four princes and achieve the fruitfulness of our lives. We must have performed several pious deeds in our previous births, we have achieved the result of that in the form of most welcoming guests before us. We have achieved the supreme bliss in our lives, as if a dying person stumbled on the pot of nectar, a starving person found the wish fulfilling tree, Jeeva undergoing hellish torture attained the abode of Lord Sri Hari, we have achieved all those fortunes with the mere sight of these four princes, let us devour the beauty of the dark cloud complexioned Rama, and contemplate upon him, like the serpent cherishes the gem on its hood.” While the crowd was witnessing, Rama, Lakshman, Bharatha, and Shathrughna entered inside the Palace of King Janaka.”

King of Vidheha offered an abundance of gifts to his sons-in-law which were beyond description, the wealth offered as a gift in marriage to Lord Sri Ramachandra was superior to the abodes of the deities. All those gifts were safely sent to the Kingdom of Ayodhya, the Queens felt miserable as the fish out of the water at the news of the departure of their sons-in-law and daughters and their families. Devi Sunayana carried her daughter Sita on her lap and kept advising her in a sweet tone “Oh! Dear Child, may you live long with your consort! May you both live a blissful married life! May you remain beloved of your consort! This is our earnest blessing to our child. Oh! Child, sincerely serve your in-laws, and elderly members of the family, always follow the words of your beloved consort, and be a dutiful wife to him. Oh! Dear one, always make sure to keep your husband cheerful by words, mind, and deeds!” The clever female companions of Devi Sita took her with them and affectionately advised her about the household duties of a married woman. The queens took all their daughters on their lap, repeatedly embraced them and kissed on their forehead,  and exclaimed in a sad tone “Why did Lord Bhrama create women on the Earth?”

Chapter – 326– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Bala Kanda– King Janaka orders marvelous arrangements for the journey of Ayodhyapathi


King Janaka summoned ministers and twice-born in the assembly “The Avadhapathi, King Dhasharatha desires to return to his Kingdom, make elaborate arrangements for their comfortable journeys and make it as a public announcement.” As soon as the news of the return of Avadhapathi is revealed to the public, the members of the assembly are overwhelmed with emotion. The people of Mithila couldn’t bear the news, asked each other’s in distress, ‘is it real or dream’, once the departure of the groom’s people was confirmed, they became miserable like the lotus flower shrivels at the time of sunset. King Janaka ordered his men to rearrange all those shelter homes built on the pathways of their journeys, soon all those homes were filled with an abundance of grains, dry fruits, beverages, clothing, beddings, etc., several thousand oxen and men in carts were loaded with the materials arrived in the shelter homes, to make the journeys of their guests more pleasurable. King Janaka ordered to keep ready one lakh horses and twenty-five thousand chariots, ten thousand elephants, cows, and buffalos well decorated with ornaments and carts loaded with gems, finest pieces of jewelry and clothing, gems, and various precious things which pushed the guardians of eight quarters into shame.

King Dasaratha repeatedly prostrated at the lotus feet of Maharishi Kaushika/Vishwamithra, and spoke passionately “Oh! Muniraja, the happiness, and welfare, all that I have achieved was your grace, Oh! Prabho, it was your auspicious grace that brought immense happiness in the family.” King Dhasharatha highly praised the virtue, righteousness, amiability, affection, and affluence of King Janaka. Every day King Dhasharatha approaches Janaka with an affectionate request to leave to Ayodhya was fondly refused by Janaka.  King Dhasharatha has to postpone his journey to his Kingdom, at the same time, King Janaka entertained his guests in a grand manner, provided them with sophisticated service and attention. The Kingdom of Mithila witnessed festivities on a regular basis, hence the people of Mithila do not even dream of the return of King Dhasharatha to Ayodhya. In this way, several days have passed, King Janaka affectionately held his sons-in-law, and his family for several days was fastened by the love of Janaka. One day Sage Kaushika and Shathanandha called King of Vidheha and advised “Oh! Rajan, you have to allow King Dhasharatha to proceed to the Kingdom of Ayodhya, although it is difficult for you to send them back.” King Janaka obediently answered “Oh! Prabho, I shall obey your order and make immediate arrangements for their departure.” King and his ministers prostrated before the Sages and received their blessing “May your Kingdom flourish with happiness and wealth! Live Long and be Victorious always.”

Sage Vamadeva along with Maharishi Narada, Valmiki, Jabali, Vishwamithra, and illustrious Sages arrived in the assembly, King Dhasharatha reverentially prostrated at the feet of the Sages, worshiped and offered seats with great honor. King Dhasharatha offered four lakh cows of good quality, adorned in jewels, was offered to the Brahmanas and spoke passionately “Oh! Mahatmas, I have achieved the fruitfulness of my life”. The king of the solar race received the blessings from the Bhramins assembled, further he called out the attendants and offered chariots, horses, and elephants as desired by them, and the poor people were offered an abundance of charities in the form of money, grains, clothing, etc. everyone praised King Dhasharatha “Glory to the Dhinakarakulanatha! Glories to the Dhinakarakulanatha!  Glories to the Dhinakarakulanatha!” and dispersed. In this way, there were several charities and festivities were taken place in connection with the wedding of Lord Sri Ramachandra with Devi Janaki, and it was indescribable even for the thousand tongued serpent Adhishesha.

King Janaka offered rich fragrant ingredients stuffed in sweet betel leaves to King Dasaratha and all the guests, thus Avadhapadhi bade farewell to all the monarchs and retired to his fortress. The days and nights were filled with various festivities, no one noticed the passage of time, days were passed like moments to them. Bhoopathimani/Jewel of King, Dhasharatha wakes up early hours of dawn, at the praise of Vandhigana and Suthagana of his glories, whenever he witnesses his charming sons along with their beautiful brides, his heart raptured in supreme bliss. King Dhasharatha finished the early morning rites and approached preceptor Sage Vashishta and offered sincere salutations and worshiped the sage, and with folded hands spoke to him “Oh! Muniraja, it was your grace I have received all that I have desired in my life. Oh! Mune, kindly invites Bhramins, and donate them cows decorated with golden jewels, and continue the practice for another few days.” Sage Vashishta praised King Dhasharatha for his generosity and called out for Sages.

The mega meal was cooked by experts in culinary, all the preparations were made out of cow’s milk, butter, and ghee. The attendants enthusiastically served the guests with rice and ghee, followed by various dishes on the marvelous golden plates, the guests were served with a delicious meal cooked with utmost purity was served at their heart’s content. The guests seated offered the initial bits of Pancharasa/five tastes to the Panchaprana, and started consuming the meal delightfully. The sweets and savories served were beyond description, and the tastes were fabulous, the expert cooks served seasoned fruits and vegetables which were difficult to name. Thus, the four types of dishes served were as prescribed in scriptures 1) food that is tasted with the tongue 2) food should be consumed after chewing 3) food that can be swallowed easily, and 4) beverages was beyond description. There were dishes of six flavors/Shadrasa, while the dinner was in progress the men and women dressed in beautiful attire, melodiously sang the names of the dishes served to the guests and entertained the guests, King Dhasharatha and the entire groom’s people were thoroughly enjoyed the music and sumptuous meal. Finally, the guests finished their meal was reverentially served with scented water to rinse their mouth and wash their hands.

King Janaka invited all the guests for a grand feast, the sumptuous meal followed by sweets and savories which were beyond description. King Dhasharatha with his four sons majestically took a walk on the rich carpeted floor was led to the grand dining hall, King Janaka washed the feet of King Dhasharatha with great affection, further he washed the lotus feet of son-in-law, Rama which resides in the Manasarovar like the heart of Lord Shiva, he washed the feet of Bharatha, Lakshman and Shathrughna considered as none other than Rama. The guests were taken to the highly decorated seats arranged for them, finally, the attendants were ordered to serve the meal. The plates made of precious yellow metal, decorated with gems in which the sumptuous meals were served for the guests.

The charming appearance of Sri Rama, adorned in marvelous crown excelled the beauty of crores of Manmatha, the women and celestials wonderstruck watching the mesmerizing beauty of that supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra, and plucked the grass and tore it into pieces removing the evil eyes on the Lord. The women assembled around the couple with a large number of earthen lamps, precious gifts, Mangaladhravya, they melodiously sang and removed the evil eyes on the couple. The deities showered flowers on the newly wedded couples, the Vandhigana and Suthaganas sung in praise of their clans. The Suvasinis of the family brought the couples in their fortresses, led them to the worship hall f0llowed with the auspicious songs, and performed the customary rites. Devi Gauri taught Rama how to offer the first meal to Devi Sita, and Devi Sarada taught the same to Devi Sita. The Vandhiganas and Suthaganas merrily sing in praise of the couple, thus everyone attained the fruitfulness of their births. Devi Janaki who was adorned in finest ornaments from head to toe witnessed the reflection of Rama in each piece of the jewelry adorned on her body, she was dared to move her sight from it even for a second, with a fear of losing the loveliest sight of Rama in it, and the rapture of love and yearning of Devi Sita was not known to anyone other than her consort. Finally, the newlywedded couples accompanied by the twice-born, Sages, Rishis, followed King Dhasharatha and preceptors to the fortress allocated for them, the blessings poured from all directions to the newlywedded couples from the city as well as from heaven, everyone exclaimed in a supreme state of ecstasy “Victory! Victory! Victory! Long live the newlyweds! Long Live the newlyweds! Long Live the newlyweds!” The Siddhas, Yogis, Sages, and Rishis poured their blessings on the couples, while the divine music reverberated on the sky, finally the Sages bade farewell and return to their respective abodes delightfully.

Devi Janaki whose beautiful eyes has the resemblance of female antelope kept looking at the charming appearance of Rama, with intense love and thirst, her eyes excelled the loveliness of fish shrunken out of modesty. The attractive blue limbs of Rama outshined millions of Kamadeva, his lotus feet adorned in red lack is the shelter place of bee-like minds of Sages, Rishis, and Mahatmas shone brilliantly, the majestic yellow silk garment on the waist, and the marvelous girdle decorated with the small bells produced jingling noises were stealing the hearts, his long hands stretched up to knees were adorned in armlets, bangles, and finger rings, his broad chest was adorned in a yellow sacred thread, and various precious ornaments, Kausthubham, Vanamala, and Srivathsam. His right shoulder was partly covered with the marvelous and lengthy yellow silk garment decorated with gold and gems was sagging down on the floor. His wide and beautiful eyes resembled lotus flower petals, ears were adorned in Makara Kundala/fish-shaped earrings, he had beautiful eyebrows, nose, cheeks, red lips resemble Bimba fruits, his forehead was beautifully adorned in vermilion and sandalwood paste, his head was adorned in magnificent crown decorated with various gems, pearls multiplied his loveliness.

King Janaka attended the groom’s people individually, and honored them and offered an abundance of gifts. He received the twice-born, Sages, Rishis with great respect and offered charities, prostrated before them seeking perpetual blessings, and stood before them with folded hands and spoke in a pleasant tone “The deities and ascetics gets highly pleased with the pure love and devotion, they are the ocean of compassion and kindness, will it be possible to propitiate the ocean by offering a handful of water?” King Kushakethu, younger brother of King Janaka approached them with folded hands and prayed to King of Kosala, with full of wise and sincere words “Oh! Rajan, the marriage between the princes and princess of Kosala and Mithila brought great fame and respect to us, kindly consider us as your sincere attendants. Oh! Kosalapathi, kindly consider these young girls as your son’s sincere attendants, and foster them with extreme kindness. Oh! Rajan, kindly pardon us for the ignorance to put you in trouble to visit us.” King of Ayodhya, the jewel of the solar race honored the King of Mithila and Kushakethu, and offered an abundance of gifts in return, the mutual respect, and love shared by the King of Mithila and King of Ayodhya was beyond description, their hearts overflown with love and respect for each other, the deities showered flowers on them. King Dhasharatha along with preceptors, followed by a huge number of twice-born reciting Vedic chants, sounds of divine musical instruments, returned to the fortress arranged for him to stay, the celestial showered flowers in extreme delight. Sage Vashishta instructed the brides and grooms to conduct the worship of family deities eventually led them to the place where the deities have been installed before the wedding ceremonies were begun.

The King of Ayodhya/Avadhapathi was extremely delighted to see his four beautiful sons and lovely daughters in law, the illustrious Kings perceived the charming grooms as the Purusharththa/Dharma, Arththa, Kama, and Moksha personified as sons of Dhasharatha and the beautiful daughters in law as the symbol of sacrificial performances, piousness, Yoga, and spiritual practices. Bharatha, Lakshman, and Shathrughna’s marriages were performed exactly the same as the wedding rites performed for Rama. The wealth and richness offered as gifts by King Janaka to his groom was beyond description, the entire wedding Hall was filled with gifts and contributions offered by King Janaka to his sons-in-law in the form of golden ornaments, silk garments, chariots, elephants, horses, several male and female attendants, cows adorned in magnificent golden ornaments. The guardians of different realms envied watching the gifts offered as gifts by King Janaka to his sons-in-law. The King of Ayodhya accepted the gifts offered wholeheartedly, further stored the required items for the brides were transferred to their carts and the rest of them were offered to the needy people. King Janaka with folded hands spoke gentle words to King Dhasharatha.

Devi Janaki and Lord Rama took a seat on the magnificent throne, King Dhasharatha gazed at the couple without blinking eyes in extreme bliss, a sudden happiness rushed through the limbs, perceived the wish-fulfilling tree bore fruits of his meritorious deeds. The whole Universe drenched in bliss, and the people have nothing to speak of other than the grand wedding ceremony of the celestial couple Devi Sita and Lord Rama. Sage Vashishta advised King Janaka to bring princesses Devi Mandavi, Shruthakeerthi, and Urmila who are the daughters of Kushakethu, the younger brother of King Janaka in bride’s attire. Devi Mandavi who is the essence of virtues, goodness, beauty, and delight, was given in marriage to Bharatha.  Devi Janaki’s younger sister Urmila who resembled the crest-jewel of the charming girls was given in marriage to Lakshman. The fair-complexioned lovely princess Shruthakeerthi who is the essence of virtues, amiability, beauty, was married to Shathrughna/Ripusudhana. Thus, the marriage of the four pairs taken place according to the customary rites and rites prescribed in Veda, all these four couples were equally admirable, were the perfect match for each other, the crowd assembled cheered in extreme joy, and the deities showered flowers on the newly wedded couples.

The Vandiganas eulogized the glories of the two clans, the Vedic chants reverberated in the sky, the sounds of divine musical instruments echoed all over, the deities rejoiced “Victory to Lord Sri Rama and Devi Sita! Victory to Lord Sri Rama and Devi Janaki!  Victory to Lord Sri Ramachandra and Devi Janakanandhini !’ and showered flowers on the newly wedded couple. The bride and groom circumambulated the fire gracefully, the crowd took feast on the beauty of the couple with their eyes, the beauty of the couple was beyond description. The mirror image of the couple reflected on all the pillars of the grand wedding hall gave out the appearance of the Devi Rathi and Kamadeva, the couple was bashful, often missed out of the sight of the crowd, all the crowd were transported to the state of ecstasy, and the state of Janaka and Devi Sunayana was beyond description. Rama applied vermilion on the forehead of Devi Janaki, resembled the fully blossomed flower enriched with the pollen, the newlyweds received gifts in abundance, finally, the Sages and Rishis assembled in the hall watched all the ceremonial rites in bliss and bade-farewell to the couple and departed.
