Chapter – 192– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Bala Kanda– The loveliness of the supreme Lord incarnated as an infant Rama

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “ Oh! Mune, the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, free from Maya, unblemished and void of attributes/Vasana, took great pleasure on the lap of Devi Kausalya due to her pure love and devotion. His attractive limbs of dark cloud complexion excelled the beauty of crores of Manmatha resembled a blue lotus flower. The lustrous nails on the red lotus feet resembled the white pearls decorated on the red lotus flower, his lotus feet possessed the divine symbol of Padma/lotus flower, the jingling noises of the magnificent anklets stolen the hearts of the Yogis and Sages. His waist was adorned in a marvelous girdle decorated with tiny bells, the beautiful three folds on the stomach, and the deep navel, hands, and arms adorned in rings, Kankan, and armlets, his chest and neck adorned in gem decorated ornaments, tiger’s claw decorated in gold, the loveliness of his face excelled the beauty of countless Kamadeva, conch shaped neck, he has attractive chin, lips, and nose. The beautiful red lips resembled Bimba fruits, attractive lines of small teeth, and eyebrows, ears adorned in beautiful ear stud, and the sweet and melodious baby’s prattle, long and shiny hairs have never been trimmed after the birth tied up as a bundle on the top of the head, decorated with the ornaments by Devi Kausalya multiplied his loveliness. An attractive yellow silk garment clothed on the waist gives way while crawling on the little knees and beautiful hands, stolen the heart of his mothers, and Yogis. Vedas and thousand tongued Adhishesha were incompetent to describe the beauty of that little divine child, known only to the noble-souls who have contemplated.”

Chapter – 191– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Bala Kanda– The naming ceremony of Lakshmana

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Mune, finally, the child born just before Shathrughna, is the abode of splendid characteristics, the inseparable and most beloved of Sri Rama, and the bearer of the Universe was named as ‘Lakshman’ by the royal priest Sage Vashishta. The preceptor spoke after a deep thought “Oh! Rajan, your four sons are the essence of Veda, your elder son Rama is beloved of Lord Shiva, sought after by Rishis, Sages, Siddhas, through various austerities and penance, is the treasure of ascetics. He would perform various childhood sports that would provide immense delight to the hearts of noble souls.” Lakshmana has grown highly devoted to Rama, became inseparable, considered his elder brother as a benefactor, and his Master showered great devotion at the lotus feet of Rama. The love and brotherhood shared with Bharatha and Shathrughna were beyond comparison, was the Master and servant, devoted and inseparable from each other. Mothers watched the beauty of their infants, one in dark cloud complexion and the other in fair complexion, moving all around in pairs and their various amusements with immense delight, they often pluck out the grass to remove the evil eyes on their lovely children. The four brothers were an ocean of beauty, wisdom, and virtue, yet Rama outshined all three of them. He spread intense delight like the cool rays of the moon, with the captivating smile revealing the tiny protruding teeth, sometimes taking a seat on mother’s lap or sitting on the cradle.”

May the Lord of Tulsidas live longer!” Thus, days were passed in utmost bliss, finally, the day has arrived for the naming ceremony of the children. Dasaratha reverentially invited family priest Sage Vashishta, provided him a seat, and spoke with folded hands “Oh! Guro, kindly performs the naming ceremony of our children, as you have already decided in your mind.” Sage Vashishta spoke “Oh! Rajan, your children bear various sacred names and are unique, although I shall reveal the names that came into my thoughts. Listen to me carefully, your eldest son is the ocean of mercy, virtues, and wisdom, he is the bliss personified, hence he would spread joy and compassion to the three worlds, he would be the remover of grief and agony of worldly existence, hence I shall name him ‘Rama’.  Oh! Rajan, your second son would be highly devoted, virtuous, would be the sustainer and preserver of the Universe, hence I shall name him ‘Bharatha’. Oh! Rajan, the infant born along with Bharatha, I shall address him ‘Shathrughna’ who would surpass the enemies, would be highly eulogized in the Veda.”
