Chapter – 280– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Janaka meets Devi Janaki attired in saffron robe in his hermitage

Devi Sunayana repeatedly prostrated at the feet of Devi Kausalya and asked permission to take Devi Sita with her that night, thus Devi Sunayana and Devi Sita returned to their hermitage of Janaka after obtaining permission from Devi Kausalya. Devi Sita greeted all her family members, friends, and attendants with great affection, everyone was heartbroken watching Devi Janaki attired in a saffron robe, and adorned in prayer beads. In the meantime, King Janaka obtained permission from Sage Vashishta and returned to his hermitage where he found his beloved daughter Janaki, his eyes welled up in tears, with the heart full of love, resembled the sacred Prayaga. Janaka’s affection for Janaki grown like a huge banyan tree, with lots of branches like love for Rama. The immortal Sage Markandeya like the wisdom of Janaka was bewildered, going to drown in the ocean of love for Janaki, was fortunately protected by the love for Rama, thus the affection for Rama and Devi Sita won over the wisdom of the King.

Chapter – 279– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Sunayana recollects the predictions of Sage Yajjavalkya

Devi Kausalya spoke in a soft voice “Oh! Devi Sunayana, kindly return to your hermitage, the Almighty Lord is the shelter to us, and Lord of Mithila is most promising to us.” Devi Sunayana prostrated at the feet of Devi Kausalya, listening to her kind and affectionate speech, she clasped the feet of Devi Kausalya and spoke “Oh! Venerable queen, you are kind and compassionate as the wife of great King Dhasharatha and the mother of Rama. The virtuous people treat the servants with kindness and respect like fire always followed with the smoke, huge mountains bear the grass on their bosom. Oh! Devi, King Janaka is your sincere attendant by word, mind, and deed, while the supreme Lord Shambhu and his consort Bhavani is your eternal savior. Who is on this Earth worthy to serve your clan? An ordinary lamp may spread light, but cannot compete with the Sunlight. Oh! Devi, Rama, and Devi Sita will successfully complete the exile period of fourteen years in the forest, thereby accomplish the tasks of the deities, after that, they will return to the Ayodhya safely. Oh! Devi, Sage Yajjavalkya has already prophesied about Rama’s exile, after proving the strength of his arms to the deities, Nagas, and humans, Rama will take up the regime as the King of Ayodhya, and peacefully live in his abode. The predictions of the illustrious Sage Yajjavalkya never go untrue.”

Chapter – 278– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya seeks the opinion of King Janaka to send back Lakshman to Ayodhya

Devi Kausalya regained her courage and spoke “Oh! Venerable queen of Mithila, you are the consort of the illustrious Rajarishi King Janaka, who is the ocean of wisdom, hence who is competent to advise you? Oh! Devi, kindly have a word with King Janaka during the leisure hours and ask the King to persuade Lakshman to return to Ayodhya, and let Bharatha follow Rama to the woods, only if the King is happy and satisfied with the proposal of mine. Oh! Devi, I am very much concerned about Bharatha, his love and devotion for Rama and Devi Sita is immeasurable, he has grown so devoted and affectionate to Rama, if he stays back in Ayodhya, I fear something untoward may happen to him.” All the queens were overwhelmed with anxiousness listening to the affectionate and guileless speech of Devi Kausalya, the deities showered flowers upon Devi Kausalya and praised her virtue. The hermits, Sages, Yogis were overpowered with various emotions by listening to the innocent, yet wise words of Devi Kausalya. All the women assembled kept silent, Devi Sumithra noticed everyone in grief, began to speak “Oh! Devi, it is almost an hour of the night have passed.” Devi Kausalya immediately rose from her seat listening to the reminder of Devi Sumithra.

Chapter – 277– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya expresses her concern about Bharatha

Devi Kausalya spoke with a deep sigh “If Lakshman, Rama, and Devi Sita continue to stay in the forest, everything would be good at the end, but all I am worried about Bharatha in the absence of Rama. Oh! Devi, with your grace my four sons and daughters-in-law, are pure as sacred Ganga, I have never sworn over Rama, today I have to open up my heart before you all, I shall tell you the truth, Bharatha’s virtue, amiability, uprightness, modestly, affection and love, devotion and faith, and nobility are beyond words and comparison, even Devi Sarada who is the Goddess of speech would find it difficult to describe. The ocean does not get over-burdened with oyster shells, I have always noticed Bharatha’s virtue and modesty, and I was very certain that one day he will add glory to the clan, even the King has repeatedly expressed his admiration on Bharatha’s agreeable disposition, gold is tested on rubbing the stones, likewise the virtue of a person tested in the difficult circumstances. It was unfair from me to speak all these on this occasion, but sorrow and affection deter a person from what to speak and whatnot.” All the queens were overwhelmed in great affection listening to the wise words of Devi Kausalya resembled pure like the celestial river/Surasari/Devanadhi Ganga.

Chapter – 276– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Sunayana gets highly impressed with the wise words of Devi Kausalya

The mind and intellect are unpredictable, is a mixture of goodness and evil, the crows, herons, owls can be seen everywhere but the swans can be found in the Manasarovar alone. Devi Sumithra spoke in tears “The mind and intellect is so strange that it creates, preserves and destroys, as the creation of Almighty Lord. It is nothing but silly as the infant’s play.” Devi Kausalya spoke “It was nobody’s fault, sorrows and happiness, joy and grief, loss and gain, are predetermined by our past deeds. The unpredictable ways of mind and intellect are known to Almighty alone, he disperses the fruit of the Karma of Jeeva, both good and evil. It is the omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent Lord who is the creator, preserver, and destroyer of the Universe and its living and non-living things. Oh! Virtuous ladies, it is no use of lamenting on the things which have no control, it is all illusion. The destiny is not under the control of an individual, if we continue mourning over the death of the King in all our lives, it would be of our loss of personal interests.” Devi Sunayana replied “Oh! Devi, your noble words are true, you are the virtuous and dedicated wife of King Dhasharatha, the world will remember your words always.”

Chapter – 275– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Sunayana, the mother of Devi Sita meets Devi Kausalya

The people of Ayodhya and Mithila in the woods could not believe their fortune, exclaimed: “We don’t deserve all this goodness.” Their devotion and love at the lotus feet of Rama were beyond words, they lived in extreme bliss. Devi Sunayana, mother of Devi Sita sends her attendants to Queen mothers to find out whether it is convenient to visit Devi Kausalya in the hermitage of Rama, thus they have decided to meet during the leisure hours, Devi Sunayana visited Devi Kausalya was received with great respect and love. Devi Kausalya offered her a comfortable seat; the conversation took place between the females of both the family was capable to melt even the rock. They conversed in great affection, overwhelmed in various emotions, shed tears of grief, and kept silent for a while. All of the females resembled the personification of love for Rama and Devi Sita. Finally, the mother of Devi Sita broke the silence with her kind words “The fate was so cruel to all of us, the intellect has ruined the milk like happiness and serenity in the family.”

Chapter – 274– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The people of Ayodhya and Mithila forgot their grief of worldly existence in the presence of Rama and Devi Sita

All the people assembled before Sage Vashishta received baskets full of fruits, rooted vegetables, etc. They have returned to their shelter homes with the baskets full of fruits and vegetables, conducted the worship of deities, preceptors, and Pithrus/ancestors, and shared the fruits among themselves. In this way, four days were passed, the people of Ayodhya and Mithila were extremely happy in the presence of Rama, none has the heart to return home without Rama and Devi Sita, they considered living in the woods with Lord Rama and Devi Sita is millions of times happier than living in the abode of Amaravathi, the abode of deities. The people who did not make it to the woods, living in their homes felt unfortunate, did not achieve the fruitfulness to live with Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita. The people of Mithila and Ayodhya in the woods have found living in the presence of Rama is the source of welfare and happiness, taking a holy dip in the river Mandakini on a regular basis, and behold Rama who is the symbol of supreme bliss and auspiciousness, conducting journey through the woods, circumambulate the propitious mountain Kamadhagiri contemplating upon Rama, visiting the hermitages of ascetics and Rishis, living on fruits, fiber roots, and vegetables available in the woods. They thought it would be blissful if they could spend another fourteen years with Rama, Lakshman, and Devi Sita in the woods, the days would go like minutes.

Chapter – 273– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The mother Earth showered warmth to the people of Mithila and Ayodhya by serving their needs in abundance

The forest dwellers brought several wicker baskets full of succulent fruits, vegetables, and fiber roots in large quantities. The very presence of Lord Rama in the Chitrakoot provided all that required items to meet the appetite of the people gathered, which was enough to satisfy their appetite with the mere sight of it. The entire forest of Chitrakoot was overflowing with joy, love, the sounds of birds and animals living in complete harmony, the cool and fragrant breeze enhanced the delight of the people. The loveliness of Chithrakoot was beyond words as if the mother Earth was showering warmth to King Janaka and the entire people of Mithila and Ayodhya. The people assembled finished holy dip and performed morning rite, and assembled before Sage Vashishta, King Janaka, and Rama to receive permission to retire to their shelter homes in the woods were presented with various kinds of fruits, fiber roots, vegetables, etc. in several wicker baskets.

Chapter – 272– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The people of Ayodhya and Mithila assembled before the illustrious Bhramins, preceptors, and Sages

During the early hours of daybreak, the King of Nimis, Janaka, and Rama took ablutions, soon the members of the two families followed them to have a holy dip in the river Payaswini, after that they all assembled under the shade of Peepal tree, all of them were emaciated with grief and exhaustion of long journeys. The illustrious Bhramins of Mithila and Ayodhya, preceptors Sage Vashishta, Vamadeva, and Shathanandha the priest of King Janaka took a seat on the altar and started giving lectures on various legends, which is full of wisdom, dispassion, and devotion, for the people of Mithila and Ayodhya to get rid of grief of worldly existence. The illustrious Sage Vishwamithra highly praised the assembly of Sages and advised “Oh! Noble souls, all of you have spent several hours without a meal, it is almost past noon, the Lord of Raghu wishes all of you have something to satiate your appetite.” The King Janaka replied “Oh! Mune, it is not advisable to have a usual meal at this moment” all the sages assembled were highly pleased with the idea of King Janaka, soon all assembled men were departed to perform midday sun worship after receiving the permission from the Sage.

Chapter – 271– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The family of King Janaka and King Dhasharatha observes fast and takes a dip in the holy river Payaswini

The men and women were plunged into great anguish, the deities, hermits, Yogis, and preceptors cried out watching the pitiable state of Janaka and the two families “Alas! It was the cruel fate that played its role!” Sage Tulsidas affirms that the grief of the ocean can be crossed only with the ferry of pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Rama. Sages and preceptors pacified the people of Mithila and Ayodhya with compassionate words, the preceptor Sage Vashishta advised King Janaka “Oh! Rajan, be calm!”. Will the darkness of ignorance overwhelm king Janaka who is Rajarishi, a renounced soul, learned and wise whose dispassionate speeches steal the hearts of hermits, and Yogis? Alas! the affection for his daughter Janakanandhini, and the devotion to Lord Rama plunged him into a deep sense of dejection, that won over the wisdom of King Janaka. The Veda emphasizes there are three types of Jeeva, the superior form of the Jeeva is the one who has achieved the knowledge of self/Athma is Paramathma, well respected in the assemblage of Rishis and Sages, wise and full of love and devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Ramachandra. The wisdom without love at the feet of Lord Sri Ramachandra is like the vessel that has no use. Sage Vashishta pacified King Janaka in many ways, and all of them went to have a holy dip in the river Payaswini, the Ram Ghat/beautiful stairs constructed for Rama on the riverbank to take a dip on a regular basis. All the women and men were overwhelmed with sorrow and grief, that day everyone observed fast, no one has the heart to consume a meal or drink even a drop of water. The animals such as deer, cows, birds, etc. in the woods engulfed in sorrow, refused to eat anything, hence nothing to talk about the two families.

Chapter – 270– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– King Janaka and his family, preceptors, and people of Mithila engulfed in sorrow

The hermitage of Rama resembles the ocean of austerities, and vows, which was brimming with the assemblage of King Janaka and his family, hermits, and preceptors, that gave out the appearance of the union of several water-courses in the ocean. The whole atmosphere reverberated with the austerities, lectures on scriptures, and Veda. The union of the two families, ascetics, preceptors of wisdom and dispassion produced deep sighs of grief, lamentation, and utterance of sorrowful words resembled the waves in the ocean, the fear and anxiousness of the family members represent the whirlpool in the ocean were prepared to calm down by the wise, learned, noble souls, preceptors resembled the ferryman, waiting for the families to board into the ferries to get rid of the grief and sufferings of Samsarasagara/ocean of grief,  alas! They had no clue of the depth like the pain of the people. The Kolas, Kiratha, Bhilas wandering in the woods resembled the travelers who were horrorstruck by the turbulence in the ocean water. As soon as the water-courses like the two families of King Dhasharatha and King Janaka met, the ocean like the hermitage of Rama swelled up with various emotions. The two families were engulfed with sorrows and grief of separation, they have praised the virtues, courage, amiability, nobleness of King Dhasharatha and wept bitterly.

They worshiped Lord Vishnu and Goddess Mahalakshmi, the men raising their hands, and the women holding the upper end of the garment prayed “ Oh! Prabho, May Lord Sri Rama along with Devi Sita take up the regime of the Kingdom of Ayodhya for several thousands of years, thereby reinstate the glories, welfare, and happiness of the Kingdom! May Bharatha install as the crown prince of Ayodhya!  let everyone in the Kingdom live in extreme bliss! Oh! Prabho, kindly provide the fruitfulness of our birth.”

Chapter – 266– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The messengers inform the arrival of King Janaka with his family, preceptors, and the people of Mithila

The messengers spoke reverentially “The spies returned to Mithila after ascertaining the state of mind of Bharatha, and the news of Bharatha proceeded to the woods of Chitrakoot with the people of Ayodhya. The spies returned to the assembly of King Janaka gave an excellent remark about Bharatha’s pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Prabhu Sri Ramachandra. Sage Shathanandha, ministers, and the royal family were engulfed with grief after listening to the affection of Bharatha. King Janaka after listening to the virtues and amiability of Bharatha, decided to meet him in person and congratulate him, soon King Janaka summoned the ministers, royal attendants, and warriors.  As an initial step, King Janaka has entrusted the safety of the Kingdom of Mithila to the loyal attendants and began his journey with his family, preceptors, and the people of Mithila in several horses, chariots, carts, elephants, etc. to the Chitrakoot in an auspicious hour. King Janaka and the large group of people did not halt on their way, today morning all have taken a holy dip in the Prayaga. King Janaka informed us to convey the message of his arrival while crossing the river Yamuna.” The messengers bowed their heads repeatedly before the preceptors Sage Vashishta, Sage Vamadeva, and Lord Rama. Sage Vashishta sends the messengers back with a few tribal people, so as to make their journey comfortable in the woods.

Chapter – 265– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The messengers’ details about the measures taken by King Janaka to protect Ayodhya in the absence of the King

The messengers spoke softly “Oh! Mahathma, the demise of King of Kosala left the city of Ayodhya and Mithila in despair, our happiness and welfare disappeared with the demise of King Dhasharatha. The people of Janakapura are extremely sad to hear the news of King Dhasharatha, especially the King of Vidheha.  The deceitful deed of Devi Kaikeyi put everyone in utter gloominess, especially King Janaka like the serpent without a gem. The news of the exile of Rama and Devi Sita into the woods and the decision to crown Bharatha as the King of Ayodhya caused a deep wound in the heart of King. Immediately after receiving the news of the demise of the King of Kosala, the King of Mithila called out for an assembly of illustrious members, ministers, Sages seeking an opinion about what are the procedures to be carried out from his side, whether he should make a visit to Ayodhya or stay in the Mithila itself. In the meantime, King Janaka send four clever spies to learn the events in the Ayodhya in the absence of the King, and the state of Bharatha as well.”

Chapter – 264– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The messengers of King Janaka arrives to meet Rama

Bharatha spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, each one of us are willing to carry out your orders with great delight, thereby we shall ensure to wipe off injustice and confusions prevailing in the minds of our subjects.” The deities were immensely pleased and showered flowers on Bharatha, listening to his guileless speech. The people of Ayodhya were astonished, the Sages and Rishis and forest dwellers rejoiced at heart. The Lord of Raghu who is selfless, kind, and compassionate, kept silent for a while, once again everyone pushed to anxiousness watching the silence of Lord. At that very moment, a few messengers from King Janaka arrived, when Sage Vashishta heard the news, he immediately sent his people to accompany them. The messengers reverentially prostrated before Lord Rama, they grieved looking at the attire of Prabhu Sri Ram resembled the hermit. The illustrious Sage Vashishta enquired “Oh! Noble souls, is that everything well with King Janaka”, the messengers bowed head reverentially before the Sage and spoke with folded hands “Oh! Mahathma, your loving inquiries about our King would do good to him and his family and entire the Kingdom.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Bharatha put forward a few suggestions before Rama to make things easier and expressed his lack of knowledge in political science

Chapter – 263– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha put forward a few suggestions before Rama to make things easier and expressed his lack of knowledge in political science

Bharatha spoke passionately “Oh! Prabho, 1) kindly command me and my brother Shathrughna to live in the woods, so that everyone would feel protected under your regime or 2) kindly advise Lakshman and Shathrughna to return to the Kingdom of Ayodhya and permit me to follow you to the woods or 3) kindly allow me Lakshman and Shathrughna reside in the forest and proceed yourself and Devi Sita to the Kingdom of Ayodhya. Oh! Prabho, you are an ocean of mercy/Karunasagara, kindly do whatever pleases you. Oh! Prabho, you have left the whole burden of the regime on my shoulder, but I have no knowledge in political science or the related matters. I may sound selfish to you; a distressed person cannot speak good sense, even the disgrace would flee from the person who does not obey the instructions of his Master. Oh! Prabho, I am impure with lots of flaws, yet you have lots of affection towards me and portrayed me as a noble soul. Oh! Prabho, I promise at the lotus feet of you, I believe the performance of coronation of you is the only way to ensure happiness to the world.”

Chapter – 262– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha reveals his earnest desire to perform the coronation of Rama as the King of Ayodhya

Bharatha spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, you are that divine tree Kalpatharu that is capable to relive all the fears and anxieties of the Jeeva, whoever stays close under the shade of it would achieve all that desired without even asking for it. All my worries and fears have disappeared after perceiving the kindness of my preceptors and Lord of Raghu, now I am completely free from perplexities. Oh! Karunakara, kindly take a decision that won’t disturb your vows and promises to our father, do not put yourself in trouble for your servant. A sincere servant never push his Master in trouble to achieve personal gain, if so, he is wicked, an ideal servant abandons all his comforts and greed and serves his Master relentlessly. Oh! Prabho, if you leave the forest and return to Ayodhya everyone would be extremely delighted, on the other hand, if we sincerely obey your orders, we shall achieve an abundance of propitiousness.  Oh! Prabho, if we obediently follow your orders, we would achieve spiritual as well as material gain. Oh! Prabho, kindly listen to my request and decided whatever you feel appropriate at this moment. Oh! Prabho, I have brought all those requisites for the coronation ceremony of you, kindly allow us to perform the rite if it pleases you.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Bharatha eulogizes the kindness and compassion of Rama

Chapter – 261– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha eulogizes the kindness and compassion of Rama

Bharatha spoke with folded hands “Oh! Prabho, Lord of Devi Sita, Sithapathi has done an abundance of grace and auspiciousness to me, he is the ocean of compassion, and knower of all. My preceptor and my Lord Sri Ramachandra are most promising to me; thus, I have got rid of all my anxiousness and grief with their blessings. I was spending days of extreme fear and distress, it was my ill fortune that added up my mother’s deceitful act and the cruelty of the fate ruined my peace of mind. Oh! Prabho, Lord of Raghu, you are Pranathapala/protector of distressed Jeeva, though it is not a new thing for you, the Veda highly eulogizes your kindness and compassion to Jeeva. Oh! Prabho, even if the whole world may go against me, your grace is enough to protect me from all the troubles. Oh! Prabho, you are that divine Kalpatharu/wish-fulfilling tree in the celestial abode of Indra, nothing can be accomplished without your grace.”
