Chapter – 274– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Bala Kanda– Sage Parashurama’s heated argument with Rama

Rama amiably addressed the Sage several times, but the illustrious Sage of Bhriguvamsamani exclaimed in fury “You are extremely talented as your younger brother, let me explain to you I am not that just Bhramin, my bows are ladle used for sacrificial fire, the arrows are oblation to the fire sacrifice, and my wrath is colossal fire, and the fourfold forces chariot, horse, elephant, and warriors are fuel added to the blaze. There were several Kshatriyas had been victim to my wrath and powerful ax, with their blood I have offered homage to my ancestors. Oh! Rama, I have performed millions of the above-mentioned sacrifices, with my Tapasya, austerities, and skill in the usage of armaments. You do not know my history, that’s why you have addressed me as a revered Bhramin. You have broken the glorious Bhavachapa, in this way you have proved your arrogance to the world, you have crossed all your limits, and displayed yourself as valorous before the huge crowd.” Rama replied “Oh! Prabho, kindly take control of your words, your anger has crossed the limits, Oh! Prabho, I have no reason to be proud of my valor, the Bhavachapa was already worn out settled in the cradle while lifting it broken into two halves.”

Rama spoke politely “Oh! Bhagavan, how can I fight with my preceptor, there wouldn’t be a fight with preceptor and disciple, hence kindly give up your anger. Oh! Bipravara,/illustrious Bhramin, my younger brother after taking notice of your saffron robe, wielded in bow, arrow, and ax assumed you as a great warrior, did not perceive your real nature, therefore he cannot be held blame for it. Oh! Prabho, your mighty stature, well-built physique, armed in ax, bow, and arrow, my brother considered you as a mighty warrior and got excited, although he had heard of your prowess, and legends, he did not recognize you thoroughly, hence he spoke harsh words full of toxin that he has inherited from his lineage. Oh! Prabho, if he had perceived you as a Sage, he would have prostrated before you and adore the dust particle from your feet on his head. Oh! Prabho, you are too compassionate and kind, forgive my brother for his mistake, it was not a deliberate attempt. Oh! Prabho, how shall I explain your glories, are we different from each other? We are inseparable, my name is ‘Rama’ and yours is ‘Parashurama’. Oh! Prabho, the bow you are wielded is mine, you have nine auspicious symbols in you, those represent tranquility, restraint, penance, purity, forbearance, truthfulness, wisdom, and supreme knowledge and devotion. Oh! Prabho, I am inferior to you, cannot compare myself with you. Oh! Bhagavan, kindly pardon us.”

Chapter – 273– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Bala Kanda– Parashurama’s fury and Rama’s amiable answer

Sage Parasurama spoke to Rama in utter fury “Oh! Rama, are you giving me a lesson after bending the glorious bow of Lord Shiva? You have conveniently explained the misdemeanor of your younger brother as children’s amusement, with your pleasant words and actions of bowing head before me. If you are Raghuvamsamani/Jewel of the clan of Raghu, Rama comes forward to have a battle with me. Oh! Shivadhrohi, do not adapt to any tricks on me, or my wrath on you and your brother would be enough to finish you both.” Thus, Sage Parashurama in extreme rage raised his ax in the air, Rama smiled at heart, bow his head before the sage, and spoke amiably “Oh! Bhagavan, you had heated arguments and wrath on my younger brother, all that turned against me. I feel the humility also can be troublesome at times, goodness gets unnoticed, the crescent moon does not do any harm to Rahu, it is the other way round that causes afflictions. Oh! Lord of Sages, kindly leave your anger, the powerful ax is in your hand, and my head bowed before you, Oh! Prabho, do whatever as you please to get freed from your anger, kindly understand that I am your sincere servant.”

Sage Parashurama continued “Oh! Rama, my powerful ax has sieved off the head of several wicked Kshatriyas and caused to lose fetus of the Queens, now it is helplessly watching at my enemy, my hands are motionless, the anger pushed me to experience intense pain on my chest, the powerful ax that caused extreme grief to several Kings has become dull. Fate has turned against me, I am experiencing a huge change in me. The feeling of compassion and kindness were unknown to me, today I am experiencing that compassion causes strain and heartache in me.” Lakshman smiled at heart and bowed before the Sage, listening to the compassionate speech of Sage Parashurama. Lakshman spoke “Oh! Mune, the cool breeze of kindness and compassion befitting your charm, the words you have uttered resembles the showers of flowers. Oh! Bhagavan, the compassion and kindness in you will remove all your wrath and discomforts.” Sage Parashurama addressed Janaka “Oh! King, I don’t appreciate the misdemeanor of this prince, kindly keep him away from my sight, otherwise, he will be pushed to his own death.” Lakshmana muttered to himself with a smile “shutting eyes would keep away the sights before you”.

Rama put a complete full stop on Lakshmana’s misdemeanor thus restored the peace in the atmosphere and approached Sage Vishwamithra and Sage Parashurama. Rama spoke with folded hands before Sage Parashurama “Oh! Bhagavan, I shall prostrate before you, kindly do not pay attention to the ignorant child, you are wise by nature. The holy men like you do not take the remarks of a child seriously, moreover, he has not committed the mistake on the Bhavachapa, I was the one caused to bend it and broken into two halves, kindly excuse the child before you. Oh! Bhagavan, you can impose any punishment on me as per your wish, I am the culprit, and offender, and kindly understand that I am your sincere servant too. Hence, you can impose whatever punishments I deserved to go through, death or imprisonment as you wish, I shall obey your commands. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Chief of the ascetics, kindly advises me how can I appease your anger, I shall do accordingly.” Sage Parashurama replied sternly “Oh! Rama, how can I get pacified, while your younger brother is throwing a mischievous look upon me. I feel if I did not punish him for his misdemeanor, and sieve off his head, this ax, and my anger will not get appeased.”

Mune,  I am your sincere servant, kindly leave your wrath on me, and shower your mercy upon me, passion is the root cause for the sin, the ignorant Jeeva get swayed with it and commits various sinful deeds. Oh! Prabho, your anger cannot bring back the broken Bhavachapa, kindly take a seat, your legs must be aching, if you are too fond of the Bhavachapa, we will find a way to mend it again, so that your peace will get restored.” King Janaka was unhappy with the way Lakshman conversed to the Sage, was frightened, and advised “Oh! Lakshman, kindly be quiet, it is not advisable to speak while the elders are on a discussion, and it is unfair to speak disrespectfully to elders.” The people assembled were alarmed to watch the misdemeanor of the younger prince, the fearless words of Lakshman added fury to Sage Parashurama, his body began to quiver in anger, and soon exhausted. He turned towards Rama and spoke stubbornly “Look, Rama, I know he is your younger brother, though he is fair complexioned, he is full of flaws resembles the golden vessel full of venomous poison.”

Lord Raghu spoke “Oh! Bhagavan, you are compassionate and kind, therefore kindly leave your wrath on this little child who is my younger brother. If he was aware of your prowess, how did he utter ignorant words on you? How could he affront you with the thoughtless words? How could he be so foolish to converse with you?  The parents and preceptors enjoy the amusements of the children, they do not get angry on their thoughtless behavior, kindly shower your mercy on my brother Lakshman, and forgive him considering as a child and a sincere servant of you. Oh! Bhagavan, you are an illustrious ascetic, achieved the highest state of spirituality with your austerities Tapasya and celibacy, you are good-tempered, and forbearing.” Sage Parashurama cooled down a little bit with the soothing words of Lord Rama, but Lakshman did not stop muttering and smiled at the sage, it irked the Sage spoke in fury “Oh! Rama, your brother is deceitful, although he has a fair complexion, he is full of toxic venom in his heart, I did not see the trace of mother’s milk on his lips, other than the deadly poison. He is not subservient, neither consider you as important nor considers me as his death.”
