Chapter – 12– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Kishkindha Kanda– Sugrivah crowned as the King of Kishkindha – Rama moved to Mount Prashravana

Lakshman summoned the Bhramins,  and the people of the Kishkindha, and in their presence Sugrivah was crowned as the King of Kishkindha, and Angadha was declared as the crown prince of Kishkindha. Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Devi Uma, there is no companion as Lord Rama in this Universe, what else I can say, there is no preceptor, or father, or mother, or brother, or Master or deity, or human or Sage as Rama. All the relationships are formed out of selfishness, Sugrivah who was pathetic lived in the woods, in utter fear and anxiousness of Vali, his body was full of soreness, became the King of Kishkindha, thus the Lord of Raghu showered compassionate grace on him too. Oh! Devi, there is nothing to get surprised to watch the humans driven afar from the devotion to that supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra live in extreme agony and grief of worldly existence. Lord Sri Ramachandra taught Sugrivah the principles of political science and statesmanship and send him to Kishkindha, and spoke “Oh! Sugrivah, listen to me carefully, I won’t be entering your Kingdom for fourteen years, the hot season is over and the rainy season has taken place. I will be living on the nearest hill not far from you. Oh! Sugrivah, you and Angadha rule the Kingdom wisely for the welfare of its subjects, keeping in mind the promises we had made to each other.” Thus, Sugrivah returned to Kishkindha and Rama moved to Mount Prashravana.

Chapter – 11– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Kishkindha Kanda– Rama pacifies Devi Thara – Sugrivah performs the final rite of Vali

Vali contemplating upon the marvelous form of Rama left his mortal coil effortlessly like the elephant knows little about the flower garland slipped out of its neck, thus Vali attained the abode of supreme Lord Rama. The people of Kishkindha were in utter dismay watching the miserable state of Devi Thara who was grieving the death of her beloved husband Vali, she approached the mortal coil of Vali with disheveled hair, and wept bitterly. The Lord Raghu saw Devi Thara in utter distress, he imparted the supreme knowledge and removed her delusion, soon Devi Thara got out of grief, “Oh! Devi, the body is made up of five essential elements, Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Ether, the soul is eternal, the body is perishable. Oh! Devi, why are lamenting over the destructible nature of body and material matters?” Devi Thara got rid of agony, and prostrated before the lotus feet of Rama, and sought the boon of intense devotion at his feet. Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Devi Uma, the supreme Lord Ramachandra makes the Jeeva dance like the puppets, Rama ordered Sugrivah to perform the final rites of Vali, further instructed Lakshman to perform the crowning ceremony of Sugrivah as the King of Kishkindha, soon everyone departed bowing head before the supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra”.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Kishkindha Kanda – Vali eulogizes the splendor of Rama

Chapter – 10– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Kishkindha Kanda– Vali eulogizes the splendor of Rama

Vali spoke miserably “Oh! Prabho, Lord Sri Ramachandra, I have understood my shrewdness will not work before my Lord. I am a grave sinner, yet I have taken shelter at your lotus feet in the hours of my death.” Prabhu Sri Ramachandra affectionately ruffled his body, he stroked his head and spoke amiably “Oh! Vali, I shall provide you the boon of immortal.” Vali spoke in tears “Oh! Prabho, you are an ocean of mercy, noble souls undertake austerities in their several births and fail to utter the sacred name ‘Rama’ at the time of departure of the soul, Lord Shankara bestows the opportunity to attain salvation by uttering the sacred Tharaka Manthra on the ear of the Jeeva who depart the world, that supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra appeared before my very eyes, hence will I get this golden opportunity again in my life? Even the Veda is incompetent to eulogize your glories and concludes ‘Na: Ithi Na: Ithi’, the Sages undertake several austerities, vow, Shamadhamadhi, meditation, contemplation, and penances to perceive that supreme Bhramam. Oh! Prabho, even after knowing me a grave sinner and arrogant, you have been so kind to restore my life, Oh! Prabho, who will be kind and compassionate as you in this Universe? Who would be a fool to cut down the celestial tree Parijatha for fencing the ordinary tree? Oh! Prabho Sri Ramachandra, kindly shower your compassionate grace on me and provide the boon of Nishchalabhakthi/Ananyabhakthi/ eternal devotion at your lotus feet, even if I may take several births in the different Yonis, I should have immense faith and devotion at your lotus feet. Oh! Prabho, my son Angadha has immense valor and strength as mine. Oh! Kalyanapradha, kindly guide my son Angadha, holding his arm. Oh! Suranara Natha, kindly treats Angadha as your sincere servant.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Kishkindha Kanda – Rama explains the reason for Vali’s defeat on the battlefield

Chapter – 9– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Kishkindha Kanda– Rama explains the reason for Vali’s defeat on the battlefield

Sugrivah fought against Vali with all his strength, ultimately the powers vested in him were getting weakened, he lost courage and was alarmed, Rama who was watching the fight between the two brothers did not wait too long, shot an arrow aiming at the chest of Vali. The arrow pierced the heart of Vali, made him withered in pain, and fallen on the ground with a loud thud. Vali was shrunken in pain, saw the supreme Lord Raghu before him. He made an effort to sit before him, witnessed the marvelous appearance of Lord Rama who has a dark cloud complexion, wielded on bow and arrow, adorned in matted hair locks, eyes resemble red lotus flower petals. Vali fixed his gaze at the marvelous appearance and contemplated upon the lotus feet of Rama, and felt that he has achieved the reward of his life. Vali’s heart was overflowing love and devotion for Rama, his lips were sealed due to immense grief, though made an attempt to speak “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Ramachandra, you have personified on the Earth to reinstate the Dharma, Oh! Prabho, you have killed me like a hunter for your associate Sugrivah. Oh! Prabho, what was that mistake I have committed to getting killed?” Lord Rama spoke “Oh! Vali, you have got killed for your deceitfulness.  You have set an evil eye on Sugrivah’s wife, who should be considered as your brother’s wife, or sister, or daughter, or daughter-in-law. There is no sin in killing a person who sets evil eyes on the stranger woman. Oh! Fool, you were so arrogant, you did not pay attention to the advice of your devoted wife Devi Thara. You know that your brother Sugrivah has taken shelter in me, he believed in the strength of my arm, yet you have approached him arrogantly to kill him.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Kishkindha Kanda – The battle between Vali and Sugrivah

Chapter – 8– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Kishkindha Kanda– The battle between Vali and Sugrivah

Vali spoke to Devi Thara “Oh! Devi, you are timid, you do not know about Lord Raghunatha who is impartial, even if he kills me, I have nothing to lose, I will attain his supreme abode and achieve the fruitfulness of my life.” Thus Vali haughtily approached Sugrivah, considering his younger brother as weak as Thrina/grass. The two brothers met face to face, Sugrivah bowed before his elder brother was greeted with a boisterous roar by Vali, it made Sugrivah flee for his life, and returned to Rama and spoken in terror “Oh! Lord of Raghu, what did I say about my brother? Vali resembles death to me.” Rama replied “Oh! Sugrivah, you two brothers have the same appearance, so I was a bit confused I did not kill him.” Lord Rama stroked his upper back, soon all the fear and anxiousness of Sugrivah disappeared. Once again, Rama encouraged Sugrivah to battle against his brother Vali, he adorned Sugrivah with a flower garland and infused all his powers in him. The two brothers Vali and Sugrivah battled against each other fiercely, Rama stood behind a tree and witnessed the fight between the two.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Kishkindha Kanda – The noble qualities of a companion as described by the Veda – Sugrivah invites Vali for a battle with him was intervened by Devi Thara

Chapter – 7– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Kishkindha Kanda– The noble qualities of a companion as described by the Veda– Sugrivah invites Vali for a battle with him was intervened by Devi Thara

Rama spoke “Oh! Sugrivah, listen to me carefully, I can kill Vali with the single shot of my arrow, and his life can’t be saved even if he takes shelter in Lord Bhrama or Lord Rudra. Oh! Dear Friend, the Veda emphasizes the virtues of a noble friend, it is a grave sin to leave a friend in distress, a virtuous will consider his mountain-sized troubles as mere particles of sand, and consider his companion’s trouble as the size of Mount Meru. The fools and ignorant make friendship with anybody, a true companion should not mislead his friend and protect from the evil path, he would lead his friend to the righteous path, he abundantly praises the virtues in his friend, and ignore his flaws. The noble friend would be willing to give and take, and serve his companion to the best of his ability, and love him abundantly knowing that the other person is in distress. The person who speaks harsh words on the face, backstabbing natured, harbors evil plans in heart, and whose mind is malicious as the venomous snake, is unworthy to be called as a companion, it is better to keep a safe distance with that kind of people. Oh! Friend, 1) a dull-servant 2) selfish Master 3) dishonest wife, and 4) the wrong companion are like spears, causes immense sufferings. Oh! Friend, believe in my strength, do not grieve, I shall make every effort to eradicate your agonies.” Sugreevah spoke “Oh! Prabho, Lord of Raghu, Vali is extremely fearless and a great warrior in the battlefields.” Sugreevah showed the heap of bones of demon Dhundhubi and seven palm trees to Lord Rama, which was effortlessly flattened with a single shot of arrow by Lord. Sugrivah was highly pleased to witness the valor of Rama, and his love and belief in Rama grew manifolds, he was satisfied that Rama is enough to put an end to the atrocities of Vali, he repeatedly prostrated before the Lord and was delighted to recognize the valor of the Lord. The light of wisdom removed Sugrivah’s ignorance, he began to speak “Oh! Prabho, I shall render service at Your lotus feet, leaving the country, pleasure, prosperity, possessions, glory, etc. I have understood the sayings of Rishis and Sages that the interest in worldly matters and material things are the obstacles to practice devotion at your lotus feet. The dualities of pain and pleasure, sorrow and happiness, grief and joy, good and evil, friend and enemy are mere illusion/Maya, the whole Universe and the infinite Nama/names, Roopa/appearance, Sabdha/sound, Sparsha/touch Rasa/taste and Gandha/smell, are fleeting natured like the dreams that disappear as soon as the person wakes up. Oh! Prabho, now I have understood, Vali is my greatest companion, his grace made me live in this Rishyamukha Parvatha which provided me the fortune to witness you. Oh! Prabho, kindly provide me the boon of Bairagya/renunciation, and the fortune to worship you day and night.” Rama smiled at heart listening to the dispassionate words of Sugreevah, “Oh! Friend, whatever you have realized were absolute truth.” Sage Kakabusundi spoke “Oh! Garuda, the Vedas declare that the supreme Lord makes the Jeeva juggle and dance like a monkey to his tune.” Rama took Sugrivah with him to the woods, and inspired him to fight against Vali, he encouraged Sugrivah not to be anxious, thus Sugrivah approached the Kishkindha and stood before the palace of Vali, gave out a thunderous roar inviting him for a battle. Vali rushed out of the palace frantically in fury was stopped by his wife Thara, she has fallen at the feet of Vali and clasped his feet “Oh! Lord, kindly listen to my words, the two brothers who made allies with Sugrivah have possessed immense courage and valor, they are unconquerable. They are Rama and Lakshman, the sons of illustrious King of Kosala, who conquer the Lord of death on the battlefields.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Kishkindha Kanda – Sugrivah describes the reason for his stay in the Mount Rishyamukha

Chapter – 6– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Kishkindha Kanda– Sugrivah describes the reason for his stay in the Mount Rishyamukha

The compassionate Lord who is the embodiment of virtues, wisdom, and valor, rejoiced at heart listening to the promise of his companion, and spoke “Oh! Sugrivah, what was the reason you have sought to live in the Rishyamukha Mount?” Sugrivah replied fervently “Oh! Prabho, me, and Vali are brothers, we had shared a very close bond between us. Once, Mayavi, the son of demon Maya, infringed our Kingdom Kishkindha in the night ours, and called out for a battle, Vali could not resist or control his rage, or step back to the call of his enemy. Soon both of them entered in a huge fight, and Mayavi flew into the dense forest, Vali did not stop his chase for the enemy, I also accompanied him for the safety of my elder brother. Finally, Mayavi took shelter in a cave, Vali paused before the mouth of the cave and instructed me “Oh! Brother, wait for my return, If I did not return till fortnight, you can leave the place assuming that I was killed.” Oh! Prabho, I have waited for a month, anxiously waited to see my brother in front of the cave. Oh! Kharari, one day I have noticed a stream of blood gushing out of the cave, I have assumed that my brother got killed at the hands of Mayavi, hence I had to flee back to my Kingdom. The ministers of the Kingdom advised it is unsafe to leave the country without a wise ruler, they persuaded me to accept the throne of Kishkindha. In the meantime, Vali returned to Kishkindha and found me on the throne, it inflated his anger and hatred towards me. He attacked me brutally, taken away all my possessions including my wife, I had to flee for my life, I have wandered all over the world in a miserable state. Oh! Lord of Raghu, finally I have taken shelter in the Mount Rishyamukha, where Vali is scared to step in due to the curse of a Sage. Oh! Prabho, living life in this dense forest makes me feel serene and secure.” The Supreme Lord who is an ocean of mercy stretched out his long arms towards his distressed companion, his hands quivered in anger to punish Vali for his misdemeanor to his own brother.
