Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Bharatha declares himself as impure to survive without Rama in the Kingdom of Ayodhya

Chapter – 172– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha declares himself as impure to survive without Rama in the Kingdom of Ayodhya

Bharatha spoke solemnly “ Oh! Mahathma, are you expecting goodness to the country and its people from crowning a wretched person like me, that too son of Devi Kaikeyi who is wicked and deceitful, hostile to Rama? I shall pronounce the truth, a virtuous only could be a wise and courageous ruler. The moment you perform the coronation of me as the King of Ayodhya, the Earth would merge in the Pathaloka. There is no grave sinner like me who caused the exile of Lord Rama and Devi Sita to leave to woods. The noble King Dhasharatha exiled Rama from the Kingdom of Ayodhya, immediately he left his mortal coil at the pain of separation from Rama and ascended to the abode of deities. I am unfortunate, I am the root cause for all the evils in the family, and still, I am sitting quietly and listening to your talks without any shame. Even though I found the palace is gloomy without Rama, I have survived till now proves my inability to practice devotion at the lotus feet of Rama who is the essence of love, alas! my heart is hungry for stately pleasures and fame. I have no words to express the impurity of my heart.”

Chapter – 171 – Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha reveals his goodness is in the service of lotus feet of  Rama

Bharatha spoke with folded hands “Oh! Mahatma, my father attained the abode of deities, and my elder brother with his consort left to woods, at this moment how could you ask me to rule the Kingdom? Do you think it will do good for me? Or Do you achieve any benefit out of it? Oh! Mahatma, my goodness lies in the service of Rama, I have lost that good fortune due to my mother’s wickedness, I am confident that my goodness lies at the service of Rama, not ruling the Kingdom of Ayodhya that has become an abode of sorrow in the absence of lotus feet of Lord Rama and Devi Sita, and Lakshman. Oh! Mahathma, would it be good to look a body adorned in precious ornaments with no clothes on it? Do you think the Bhramavichara without the sense of control and practice of abandonment of interest in worldly matters would do good? Will the luxuries and comfort be pleasure-giving to an ailing person? Will the Yoga and Japa do good to a person without devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Hari or Lord Hara? Will the charming appearance of a body without life in it would do good? I don’t feel good without Rama, hence grant me permission to leave to Rama, my goodness lies at the lotus feet of Rama. Oh! Mahathma, you may feel good to crown me as the King of Ayodhya for the welfare of the people, and you may think that I have uttered the above due to my ignorance and affection.”

Chapter – 170 – Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Bharatha addresses the assembly with the pleasant words

Bharatha grew restless listening to the nectar-like innocent words of Devi Kausalya, the lotus-like eyes of Bharatha overflown with tears that watered fresh shoots of anxiousness in his heart, whoever watched Bharatha’s pure love and devotion for Rama forgot their existence.  Tulsidas Maharaj described it as flawless love. Bharatha rose from the seat, and stood with folded hands, addressed the huge assembly with the innocent words, those words resembled nectar was steeped into the ears of the listeners. “My revered preceptor has given me excellent advice which has been recommended by the ministers and subjects of Ayodhya. My beloved mother Devi Kausalaya too has advised me what is appropriate for the situation, I certainly wish to carry out her affectionate orders with utmost reverence. It is advisable to sincerely follow the advice of preceptor, parents, master, and closest companion for welfare and happiness. Whoever fails to perform one’s own duties and responsibilities would incur a load of sins. All the advice I have received from my preceptor and Mother Kausalya will do good to me, even though my heart is not fully convinced. Hence, kindly listen to my requests and advise me. Kindly forgive me for my presumption and courage to speak before the elders, the wise and learned won’t consider it is an act of virtueless when the other person is in extreme distress.”

Dear son, the command of the Preceptor should not be overruled, you should follow it sincerely for the good of you. Oh! Dear child, stop grieving, accept fate and changes are inevitable. The Lord of Raghu is in the woods, and the King is in the abode of deities, Oh! Dear child, do not be weak-hearted, you are the only support for the Kingdom, its subjects, ministers, your family, your mothers, etc. Oh! Dear child, I order you after perceiving the situation thoroughly, it is the willingness of Almighty Lord, and the destiny, have courage and reverentially obey the command of your preceptor, rule the Kingdom wisely for the welfare of the people and relieve your family from the afflictions.” Bharatha silently listened to the wise words of preceptor, mother, ministers, and honorable members in the assembly, those were soothing as sandalwood paste to his heart. He further listened to his mother Kausalya’s nectar-like innocent and affectionate words.

Chapter – 167 – Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Sage Vashishta advises Bharatha to rule the Kingdom of Ayodhya so as to follow the command of his father

Sage Vashishta spoke “Oh! Thatha/dear son, tell me who is fortunate than the King Dhasharatha who has attained virtuous children like Rama, Bharatha, Lakshman, and Shathrughna? King Dhasharatha was fortunate in all manner; hence it is not required to mourn for him. Oh! Dear Son, do not grieve over the demise of the King, and sincerely follow the command of the King. The King has bestowed the kinship to you, hence adore the Kingdom which was offered to you by your father, he has forsaken Rama who is dear as his life in order to keep up his promise to Devi Kaikeyi, ultimately, he has left his mortal coil at the pain of separation from Rama. The King loved his promises more than his life, and he always kept his word intact. Oh! Dear son, therefore follow the command of your father, it would provide all the goodness to your life. Do you remember, Sage Parashurama who followed the command of his father and taken away the life of his mother Devi Renuka, the whole world stands witness to it.  Do you remember, the legend of Puru the son of Yayathi who exchanged his youthfulness to his father, therefore whoever sincerely followed the command of parents will not incur sin or grief in their lives.”

Chapter – 166 – Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Sage Vashishta details about the Jeeva whose life is miserable

Sage Vashishta spoke passionately “Oh! Dear Bharatha, the Jeeva who is miserable are 1) The Grihasthashrami/married man, who does not follow the rites, duties, and responsibilities 2) The Jeeva who is attached to material matters, richness, wealth, money, possession, fame, family, children, wife, relatives and companion, and does not follow the practice of renunciation. 3) The ascetic, saintly people who have abandoned extreme austerities, penances, Shamadhamadhi, and follow liking towards comforts and luxuries of life. 4) The Jeeva who gets angry without no reason, deceitful, and unfair to their parents, preceptors, and brothers 5) The Jeeva who finds an opportunity to hurt others by words, deeds, and minds, extremely selfish and the one who is interested to take care of his own body and it needs. 6) The Jeeva who has no devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Hari or Hara is extremely wretched by all means. The Lord of Kosala, King Dhasharatha does not deserve to be grieved, his fame and truthfulness are widespread among the fourteen worlds. Oh! Dear child, there was not a ruler like King Dhasharatha and there will not be a ruler like him in the future. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shambhu, Lord Indhra, and deities, were praises the virtues of King Dhasharatha.”
