Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Devi Sita declares her willingness to join with Rama to travel to the woods

Chapter – 67– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Sita declares her willingness to join with Rama to travel to woods

Devi Sita continues “Oh! Dheenabandhu, if you leave me in Ayodhya and proceed to woods, I promise you, I shall not survive without you. Oh! Prabho, you are the remover of distress, you are supreme Lord, knower of all, charming and compassionate, you are the storehouse of virtues and amiability. Oh! Prabho, as I walk behind you following your lotus footsteps, I shall forget the hunger and exhaustion. Oh! Prabho, I shall render relentless service to remove your exhaustion from the journey to woods. Oh! Prabho, I shall remain at the lotus feet, fanning you while you take rest under the shades of the trees. I shall forget all my grief watching your lotus face, following your footsteps. Oh! Prabho, I shall massage your lotus feet while taking a rest on the grass mattress during the night hours, so that you may get rid of the exhaustion of the journey. The scorching heat or chillness of the weather cannot harm me while I take pleasure contemplating and serving at your lotus feet. None of the wild creatures would dare to look at me in the presence of my Lord, how did the jackal and wolves withstand in the presence of a lion? Oh! Prabho, it is true that my limbs are delicate and fragile, but my beloved Lord is capable to carry the whole weight of the Universe and its hardships, hence it is appropriate for me to leave all the luxuries of the palace and follow your footsteps while you undertake penance.”

Chapter – 66– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Sita requests Rama not to leave her in the palace

Devi Sita spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, the birds and animals in the forest would be my relatives, the woods, bark, and trees would be a spotless robe for me, and finally, the hut where I live with my beloved Lord would be comfortable as the abode of deities to me. The Vanadeva and Vanadevatha would take care of me as Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, and the god and goddess in the woods would protect us like their relatives, the tender leaves and grass would provide the comfort of cushions as long as I am with the company of my beloved Lord. The fruits and rooted vegetables in the forest would make a lavish meal for us, the mountains and the lush land would provide the luxuries of hundreds of palaces of Ayodhya to me. Oh! Prabho, the practice of contemplation at your lotus feet would make me delightful as the female Chakravaha during the daylight. Oh! Prabho, you have mentioned the difficulties and hardships involved in the life of woods, but none of them would match with the pangs of separation from my beloved Lord. Oh! Kripanidhan, kindly note my sincere requests, you are the ocean of mercy, Oh! Lord of Raghu who is the precious jewel adorned on the crown, kindly allow me to follow you, do not leave me behind. Oh! Prabho, I shall refrain from giving long lectures knowing that you are kind and compassionate to Jeeva, and you are attainable with pure love and devotion.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – The luxuries of life turn into illnesses and the ornaments into burden and life on Earth becomes torture for a woman without her consort

Chapter – 65– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– The luxuries of life turn into disease and ornaments into burdens and life on Earth becomes torture for a woman without her consort

Devi Sita spoke in a soft tone “Oh! Prananatha/beloved Lord, you are the abode of mercy, you are the essence of wisdom, fortune, charm, prosperity, and welfare. Oh! Lord you resemble the moon to the lily-like race of Raghu’s, without your presence heaven would be similar to hell. Oh! Lord, all those close relations formed in the life as a father, mother, sister, brother, kinsmen, friends, father-in-law, mother-in-law, preceptors, relatives, friends, and even the children for a woman would torment as the scorching heat of the Sun in the absence of her beloved consort, even though everything seems to be perfect in all respects turns out sour in the absence of husband for a woman. The richness, wealth, fame, prosperity, possession, status, etc. are mere objects to please the heart of a woman, it can’t compensate for the voidness created by the separation from her consort. The luxuries of life turn disease and ornaments into a  burden and life on Earth becomes torture for a woman without her consort. Oh! Prananatha, nothing is delightful to me on this Earth, the life without the consort for a woman is a river without water, the body without a soul. Oh! Prabho, I shall remain happy and safe in your company always, I shall continue to live happy as long as I follow your footsteps, which resemble cloudless moon of autumn night.”

Chapter – 64– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Sita realizes that there is no grief is horrifying as the separation from her husband

Rama continues “Oh! Devi, whoever does not follow the advice of a close companion, preceptor, and elders would undergo afflictions and repent in their lives.” Devi Sita’s beautiful eyes were overflown with tears after listening to the most agreeable yet painful words from her beloved Lord.  The soothing words of her beloved consort have resulted in the scorching heat of the sun on the Chakravaha birds that takes pleasure in the moonlights. Vidhehanandhini could not utter a word in extreme agony, she feared her pious and kind words would leave her, suddenly she has fallen at the feet of Devi Kausalya and clasped her feet with tears overflowing, and with folded hands, the daughter of Mother Earth began to speak “Oh! Dear Mother, kindly forgive me. Oh! Most venerable lady, kindly forgive my ignorance. The Lord of my life has given me the most important advice to protect my life from all hardships. However, after giving serious thought to the above, I have understood that there is no disaster heart-breaking as the separation from beloved consort to a married woman.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Rama describes the wilderness of the forest to Devi Sita

Chapter – 63- Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama describes the wilderness of the forest to Devi Sita

Rama spoke to Devi Sita affectionately “Oh! Devi, life in the forest is pretty hard, the plain ground will be the couch, the leaves and bark of trees will be the robe and shelter homes, the fiber roots, vegetables, and fruits available in the season makes the meal, and most of the fruits and vegetables are not available all year round, hence you have to get easily adapted to the life in the woods. The demons and carnivores assume various forms and chase the humans, the water from the hills is extremely cold and unpredictable, the difficulties involved in the wood are beyond description. There are wild birds, venomous serpents, dreadful demons, that are a constant threat to humans, even the courageous people get alarmed at the wilderness of the forest, Oh! Mrigalochani, you are too timid and delicate, you are not compatible to live in the woods. Oh! Beautiful one, the whole world would blame me if I take you to the forest, how did the swans in the Manasarovar lake that are used to consume the nectar-like water live in the salty ocean water? How did the cuckoo survive in rough bush? Oh! Devi, kindly take note of all these things and change your idea to follow me to the woods, and stay at the palace. Oh! Moon-like-faced-one, the life in the woods is beyond description.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Rama describes the importance to follow the advice of the preceptor, the words prescribed in the Veda and scriptures to Devi Sita

Chapter – 62– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama describes the importance to follow the advice of the preceptor, the words prescribed in the Veda and scriptures to Devi Sita

Rama spoke in a sweet tone “Oh! Devi Sita, whoever sincerely follow the advice of Guru/Preceptor, and the words prescribed in the Vedas would achieve all the auspiciousness, and never face any miseries in their lives. You might have heard the fate of King Nahusha, and Sage Galava who have suffered several hardships by disrespecting the advice of their preceptors.”

Sage Galava who have completed studies of Vedashasthra under the guidance of the illustrious Maharishi Vishwamithra, while leaving the hermitage of Guru forever, insisted Maharishi Vishwamithra ask for Gurudhakshina, but Maharishi gracefully refused to accept the Gurudhakshina. Galava was adamant not to leave the preceptor without offering the Guru Dhakshina. Finally, Maharishi Vishwamithra wanted to get rid of this disciple and instructed Galava to bring thousands of snow-white colored horses with black ears as Gurudhakshina, later Galava had to face several hardships to find the rare breed of horses and follow the order of his preceptor.

The illustrious King Nahusha was a pious and wise ruler, Lord Indra was afflicted with the Bhramahathya sin by slaying Vrathrasura and took shelter in the Manasarovar lake, the deities installed King Nahusha as the Lord of deities/Indra. Once, Nahusha met Devi Sachi and fallen at her beauty instantly, he could not withdraw his mind from the loveliness of her. Devi Sachi met Sage Brihaspati and sought protection from him, the deities advised Nahusha to leave his interest in Devi Sachi were fell on deaf ears. Devi Sachi requested King Nahusha to meet her in a palanquin carried by the illustrious Sages.   The King Nahusha was so obsessed with the loveliness of Devi Sachi readily agreed to meet her demand; thus, King left his abode in a palanquin carried by the Sages to meet Devi Sachi, on his way, the Sages have intentionally delayed the journey moving in a tortoise speed, King Nahusha was impatient to meet Devi Sachi, gave a kick on the shoulder of the sage who was carrying the palanquin. It was Sage Agasthya who got a hard kick on his shoulder from Nahusha cursed the King to become a python.

Rama continued “Oh! Sumukhi,/beautiful faced-one, Oh! Sayani, I will return from the woods immediately after completing the promise to my father, days will go without our knowledge, hence, wait for me patiently, and listen to my advice. Oh! Sundari, if you are not willing to follow my advice out of love and affection, you may grieve all your life. Oh! Devi, the dense forests are beautiful, although equally dangerous places to live, due to extreme heat, cold, sudden floods, fire, etc. Oh! Devi, the pathways are pretty rough, thorny, and we have to move without foot cover. Oh! Devi, your lotus feet are so soft and delicate, the pathways in the forest are extremely hard and difficult to cross, with the huge mountains, caves, streams, rivers, etc. are terribly unapproachable and dreadful. The sudden attacks from the wild animals such as tiger, lion, bear, elephants would take away the serenity of the mind of even the brave.”

Chapter – 61– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama advises Devi Sita to stay with Devi Kausalya for the welfare of all

Rama comforted Devi Kausalya with soothing words, then he moved to Devi Janaki and began to explain the dangers as well as the goodness of the life in the woods to her. Although Rama was reluctant to speak anything to his wife in the presence of his mother, he found the urgency of the situation required to explain the following “Oh! Devi, kindly listen to me, do not mistake me, if you wish wellness of me and the family, it is apt to live in the palace and serve your parents in law and take pleasure in the stately life. Oh! Virtuous lady, if you follow my words, you will get benefitted, there is no sacred duty other than serving husband and parents-in-law for a woman to achieve piousness in life. Oh! Devi, your presence with my mother is more important at this moment, whenever she loses her good self-grieving from the separation of her only son, you can help her to recover from the gloominess by explaining various legends from the scriptures, in that way, my mother Kausalya will regain her health and serenity. Oh! Sumukhi,/beautiful faced one, I wish you should follow my advice to stay with my mother, for the welfare of all.”
