Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Sundara Kanda – The spies of Ravana describes the might of the army of Vanaras and bears of Rama

Chapter – 56– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– The spies of Ravana describes the might of the army of Vanaras and bears of Rama

Ravana continued haughtily “Oh! Spies, why are you not uttering a single word, are you confused or terror-struck? Did you meet my enemies? Are they anxious about their fate after listening to my might? Why are you not speaking about the might of my enemies?” The spies began to speak amiability “Oh! Prabho, you have put forward all the questions that have clear-cut answers with us, still, we fear you should not get angry listening to them. Oh! Prabho, Dhashanan, as soon as Vibheeshana arrived in the assembly of Rama, he was embraced and accepted as the sincere servant of Rama, by applying vermilion and sandalwood paste on his forehead. Oh! Prabho, when the Vanaras and bears found us as the spies of mighty King Dhashanan, they fastened us and produced before King Sugrivah, and prosecuted in many ways. They were about to cut off our nose and ears, soon the younger brother of Rama intervened and protected us from getting punished. Oh! Prabho, you have enquired the might of warriors of Lord Rama, that cannot be described even with the thousands and millions of tongues. Rama was accompanied by innumerable dreadful Vanaras and bears of huge sizes, with sharp teeth and nails as weapons. We have noticed that the Vanara who killed your son Akshakumara and destroyed the city of Lanka is the weakest among those Vanaras. Oh! Prabho, these mighty Vanaras of mountain-sized has the vicious appearance and immense valor resembles several untamed elephants.”

Chapter – 55– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Ravana self-praising abundantly and misjudging the might of his enemies

Lakshman spoke “Oh! Demons, let your King know my messages that his death is hanging above his head, ask him to return Devi Sita safely to Lord of Ragu, and surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Rama.” The demons bowed before Lakshman and returned to Lanka, all the way they were praising the boundless compassion of Lord Sri Ramachandra, they were singing in praise of the virtues of Lord Rama and arrived in the assembly of Ravana. Dhashanan laughed at them and enquired “Oh! Shuka, tell me about your welfare and the news of Vibheeshana who is weak ran out of the King of Lanka in fear, whose death is hanging above his head. I have fostered him generously in Lanka, he must have got crushed as grain under the feet of my enemies. Oh! Spies, tell me about the fate of the host of Vanaras and bears who were forced to march towards Lanka and their bad luck. It was the King of the ocean who protected them from falling prey into my hands and it was the mercy of King of the ocean, my enemies are still alive. Finally, tell me more about the two ascetics, Rama and Lakshman who are drenched in terror of my might.”

The spies appeared as Vanaras and observed the supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra, they praised the virtue and amiability of the Lord to those who have taken shelter in him. The spies began to praise openly the virtues and compassion of the Lord, forgetting themselves as the emissaries of Ravana. Soon, the Vanaras of the Lord located the spies of Ravana and fastened them, produced before Sugrivah who ordered to disfigure them and send them back to Ravana. Soon, the Vanaras chased the demons disguised as Vanaras all over the wood, the demons shrieked and cried for help were ignored, Vanaras were determined to punish the demons, but Lakshman intervened and laughed at them, he released the demons from the capture and advised “Oh! Demons, deliver my message to your King Ravana, let him read it, remind him the destroyer of the demon clan Lakshman waiting for his response.”

Chapter – 53– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Lakshman gets agitated with the suggestion of Vibheeshna, requests Rama to dry up the ocean

Vibheeshana speaks “Oh! Prabho, Sri Ramachandra, the presiding deity of the ocean is your ancestor, hence your appeal to the King of the ocean will be taken into consideration and suggest the appropriate means to resolve the issue so that the entire Vanaras and bears can easily cross the ocean without any hurdle.” Rama was pleased with the idea of Vibheeshana, spoke “Oh! Dear friend, you have suggested an excellent plan, let us see how it works.” But Lakshmana was not at all pleased with the idea of Vibheeshana, spoke in anger “Oh! Prabho, the destiny cannot be overruled, kindly prepare to dry up the ocean, so that your request will be heard, the cowards and lazy are people call for the help of the deity, do not act their own.” Rama laughed at the words of Lakshman and pacified him that he will do the necessary to tackle the issue, thus Rama proceeded towards the ocean. He reverentially prostrated before the King of the ocean, and greeted him, spread some Kushagrass on the seashore, and taken a seat on the Kushagrass.  Meanwhile, in the city of Lanka, Ravana felt humiliated when Vibeeshana abandoned him, he sends spies to follow Vibheeshana.

Chapter – 52– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Rama seeks the opinion of  Vibheeshana about crossing the vast ocean

In this way, Lord Raghu protected Vibheeshana from the flames like the wrath of Ravana and bestowed the sovereignty of Lanka, later Lord Rama offered the fortune of Lanka, in the same manner, Ravan achieved it/devotion from Lord Shambhu, after conducting severe penance by offering his ten heads. Whoever worships the demigods without faith and belief in Lord Ramachandra is considered as beasts without tails and horns. Thus, Vibheeshana became the sincere attendant of Lord Sri Ramachandra, and the Vanaras were highly pleased to watch his amiability. The Supreme Lord who is the knower of all, Sacchidhananda Swaroopa Paramathma Parmambhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, incarnate in infinite forms at his own will, inseparable from Maya, the destroyer of wicked demons, gave a lecture on discipline “ Oh! Vanaras, Oh! Lankapathi, how do we cross the vast and unfathomable ocean infested with the wild aquatic animals?” Vibheeshana replied “Oh! Lord of Raghu, Oh! Prabho, your powerful arrows have the ability to dry up innumerable oceans, yet the moral ground is to seek permission from the ocean King who is the presiding deity.”

Hail Lord Sri Ramachandra!” Vibheeshana’s eagerness to listen to the nectar-like speeches of the Lord grew beyond words. Vibheeshana prostrated before the Lord, again and again, shed tears of joy, and spoke fervently “Oh! Kripalu, you are the purifier of souls, you are the Lord of animate and inanimate things, you are the protector of All, you are that all-pervasive Bhramam, Oh! Prabho, previously I had some desires in my heart, all that has been disappeared with the stream of devotion at your lotus feet. Oh! Prabho, kindly provide the boon of Ananyabhakthi/relentless devotion, which gladdens the heart of Lord Shambhu.” Soon Prabhu Sri Ramachandra replied, “Yevamasthu/so be it.” The Supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra asked for ocean water and spoke “Oh! Vibheeshana, even though you are free from desires, my grace will not fail to provide its reward.” Rama applied the sacred symbol of vermilion and sandalwood paste on the forehead of Vibheeshana, and the deities’ showered flowers in immense delight.
