Chapter – 15– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Hanuman pacifies Devi Sita

Devi Janaki listened to the affectionate words of Hanuman with a great inclination, understood that he is the ardent devotee of Lord Sri Ramachandra by word, deed, and thought. Soon, Devi Janaki has developed a motherly affection for Hanuman, perceiving him as the passionate devotee of Lord Rama, her eyes filled with tears and a sudden thrill ran through her limbs, and spoke in tears “Oh! Hanuman, you have appeared before me as a wooden log while I was drowning in the ocean of grief, Oh! Thatha, kindly tell me all about Lord Sri Ramachandra, who is the slayer of demon Khara/Kharari, and his younger brother Lakshman. Oh! Son, why did that all-merciful Lord Ramachandra has become too hard-hearted towards me? Does the chief of Raghu who is the source of bliss and companion of distressed souls remember me? Oh! Son, do I get the fortune to witness the marvelous appearance of Lord Rama who has dark cloud complexioned? Will my eyes get the opportunity to witness the most attractive form of that Lord?” her voice paused for a while due to grief, eyes drenched in tears “Oh! My Lord, you have completely forgotten me!” Hanuman, watching Devi Sita sinking in the grief of separation from the Lord, began to speak “Oh! Mother, Lord Rama, and his younger brother Lakshman are doing well, but Lord Rama is sorrowful at your separation, Oh! Mother, do not feel dejected, Lord Rama loves you manifold as you love him.”

Chapter – 14– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Hanuman dropped the ring of Rama from the Shishumpa tree – The conversation between Devi Sita and Hanuman

Hanuman who was hiding behind the cluster of leaves on the Shimshupa tree noticed the miserable state of Devi Janaki, immediately dropped the ring which was given by Rama to hand over to Devi Vaidhehi. As soon as Devi Sita noticed the ring which has the name ‘Rama’ imprinted on it, she sprang up with extreme joy and picked it from the ground, as if her prayers were answered. Devi Sita took the ring from the ground and yearningly looked at the Ramanama engraved on it, she kept looking at the ring with a mixed feeling of joy and sorrow, and thought “who can defeat the Lord Mayapathi? No Maya could create a replica of the ring of Lord of Raghu.” Devi Sita was immersed in various thoughts, soon she could hear the nectar-like voice of Hanuman singing in praise of Lord Raghu. As soon as the sweet tone praising the virtue of Rama entered into her ears, all her grief disappeared, she listened to them all with her soul and ears, while Hanuman was describing the splendor of Rama. Devi Sita was astounded “Where does he who has nectar like the sweet voice singing in praise of Rama? Why he’s not appearing before me?” Soon, Hanuman appeared from the back of Devi Janaki “Oh! Devi, Oh! Mother, I shall promise on Lord Rama, I am the messenger of the compassionate Lord Sri Ramachandra, I have brought that ring for you. Oh! Mother, it was the ring given to me by Lord Sri Ramachandra and instructed me to give it to you.” Devi Janaki enquired surprisingly “Oh! Vanara, kindly describe how did the friendship between the human and Vanaras was formed?” Hauman explained all that happened in the mount Rishyamukha in detail to Devi Janaki.

Devi Sita immersed in various thoughts “The wicked demon will kill me in a month’s time.” Devi Sita prayed with folded hands to Thrijata “Oh! Mother, you are the only one who protected me from the arrogant female demons, kindly advise me how to get rid of this body so that I can get freed from the miseries and sufferings as well. I can’t bear the grief of separation from my beloved Lord Sri Ramachandra, Oh! Mother, kindly arrange for a funeral pyre so that I can get rid of this body. Oh! Wise lady, so that I can prove my love and devotion at the lotus feet of my beloved Lord. I can’t bear the sharp words of Ravana, that are piercing my ears.” Soon, Thrijata fell at the feet of Devi Sita and pacified her describing the might, valor, fearlessness, and glory of the Supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra, and Thrijata returned to her home. Devi Sita became inconsolable wept bitterly “My fate has turned against me; I am not even getting fire to kill myself and thereby get rid of the pain of separation from my beloved Lord. The stars are visible on the sky, not a single one is prepared to fall on the Earth. The moon is cool, but not prepared to initiate lightning thunderstorms. Oh! Ashoka tree, you have golden-colored leaves resemble fire, why do not you lit up flames, so that I can get rid of the body and grief as well.” Every single minute seemed like a Yuga for Hanuman who was watching the miserable state of Devi Sita.

I have seen the ten-headed Ravana all naked, mounted on the donkey, his head was shaven completely and the twenty hands were chopped, he was moving to the southern direction. I have seen Vibheeshana was crowned as the King of Lanka, also heard the reverberating sounds of drums and divine musical instruments on the victory of Lord Sri Rama who was seated with Devi Sita on his right. Oh! Ladies believe my words, I assure you all my dream will come true in a short period of time and the defeat of wicked demons are certain.” The female demons assembled before Thrijata was horror-struck, soon rushed to Devi Sita and fell at her feet.

Dhashanan, listen to me carefully, a lotus flower can’t bloom in the light of a firefly, think over it again and again. Perhaps, you have no knowledge about the powerful arrows of Rama, Oh! Chapter – 9– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sundara Kanda– Hanuman arrives in Ashoka Vatika

Hanuman spoke in tears “Oh! Vibhishan, Oh! Dear Friend, though I was born in the lowly clan of Vanaras, that compassionate Lord Sri Ramachandra showered an abundance of grace on me, I could still feel the kindness of that Lord. Oh! Vibhishan, it is certain that whoever forgets the presence of that supreme Bhramam Lord Sri Ramachandra, and chase after the sensual pleasures and material things would undergo extreme agony and sufferings of worldly existence.” Hanuman shed tears of love for Rama and described his endless virtues to Vibhishan, and expressed his desire to meet Devi Sita. Hanuman said “Oh! Brother, I would like to meet Mother Devi Sita at once.” Vibhishana explained elaborately about the whereabout of Devi Sita who was lodged in the Ashoka Vatika, one of the pleasure gardens of Ravana. Soon Hanuman assumed the minuscule form and darted to the Ashoka Vatika to meet Mother Sita. As soon as he saw the emaciated form of Devi Sita, prostrated before her from the fair distance. Devi Sita was shrunken in utter grief and pain of separation from the Lord, attired in a saffron robe and prayer beads, she was tied hair in a single braid, spend the whole night awake, uttering the name of Lord Rama and remembering the countless virtues of Rama.
