Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – The arrival of mighty Vanaras and bears in the city of Lanka

Chapter - 39– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – The arrival of mighty Vanaras and bears in the city of Lanka

Angadha speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Kosaladheesa, the ten-headed demon Ravana has lost his piety and has been drenched in ignorance, that is why he has grown afar from your lotus feet, which resulted in falling under the clutches of death. The aforesaid four virtues of the King 1) Sama 2) Dhana 3) Dhanda and 4) Bedha abandoned him, these four virtues represent the four pieces of his crown that have already taken shelter at your lotus feet.” Rama smiled at the ingenious response of Angadha, further he described the fortress of Lanka, the army of Ravana, etc. Rama summoned his counselors after obtaining clear-cut information about the Kingdom of Lanka, and instructed them “Oh! Dear comrades, Lanka has four massive gates, think over how can we invade them.” Soon, the chief of Vanara Sugrivah, elderly Jambavan, and Vibhishana the younger brother of Ravana meditated upon Lord Sri Ramachandra and came out with a brilliant plan, they mutually discussed and came into conclusion to divide the huge army of Vanaras and bears into four sections led by strong warriors. Further, they have called upon the leaders and discussed their plan in detail, and finally conceived a clear-cut idea of who should lead the army, how to attack the opponent, etc. everyone bowed before the lotus feet of Lord Sri Ramachandra. The mighty Vanaras and bears holding mountain-sized rocks and peaks proceeded to Lanka, cheering in great enthusiasm “Hail Lord Seethapathi! Hail Lord of Raghu! Hail Lord of Kosala!” these Vanaras and bears produced deafening roar that kindled fear among the people of Lanka. Although the Vanaras and bears have thoroughly known the fortress of Lanka is impenetrable, they have moved at the will and might of Lord Sri Ramachandra, soon the four huge gates of the fortress were encompassed by the mighty Vanaras, and bear-like the clouds disperse all over the sky, they have produced deafening sound of kettle drums revealing their arrival in the city.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – The conversation between Rama and Angadha – The four virtues of Statesmanship 1) Sama 2)Dhama 3)Dhanda and 4)Bedha

Chapter - 38– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – The conversation between Rama and Angadha – The four virtues of Statesmanship 1) Sama 2)Dhama 3)Dhanda and 4)Bedha

Devi Mandodhari speaks “Oh! Prabho, your two sons Akshakumara and Prahastha were got killed by the mighty Vanaras. Your capital Lanka has burnt down into ashes, kindly learn from your mistakes, leave your animosity against the merciful Lord Sri Ramachandra, and worship him so that you can achieve eternal fame and glory.” Thus, Devi Mandodhari continued to advise her beloved Lord Ravana till the daybreak, at the early hours of dawn Ravana haughtily rushed to the assembly, forgot all his fears and anxiousness, occupied his majestic throne. Rama called out for Angadha who appeared before Lord and reverentially prostrated before him, was asked to take a seat closer to the Lord. Rama spoke with a smile “Oh! Son of Vali, Oh! Dear child, I wanted to know the truth, is that Ravana is the chief of the demon race? Is he possessed incomparable might which was highly speaking all over the world? Oh! Son, it is strange to note that how did you manage to toss the crown of Ravana?” Angadha spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sarvajja, Oh! Pranathasukhakari, I have learned from you that the four virtues of statesmanship are 1) Sama/reconciliation, 2) Dhama/restrain 3) Dhanda/punishment 4) Bhedha/divide are the essential qualities of a King. The Veda eulogizes them as the four pedestals of the statesmanship, it came into my mind before this incident took place in the assembly of Ravana.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – The death does not punish the Jeeva with the vicious weapons, it steals intellect, wisdom, virtues, strength, and the reasoning ability of the Jeeva

Chapter - 37– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – The death does not punish the Jeeva with the vicious weapons, it steals intellect, wisdom, virtues, strength, and the reasoning ability of the Jeeva

Devi Mandodhari spoke “Oh! My beloved Lord, kindly understand the might of Lord Sri Ramachandra who is the Lord of the Universe, he killed Viradha, Kabandha, Khara, and Dhushana, and took the life of Vali with the shot of a single arrow. Oh! Prabho, he is the most compassionate Lord who has sent the powerful emissaries to protect you from grief and troubles. You have been humiliated and crushed your pride in the grand assembly by his emissaries like the lion attacks the herd of elephants. He is the Lord of the solar race, who constructed a mighty bridge across the vast ocean as a mere sport, he encamped with several Vanaras and bears as his armies on Mount Suvela. Oh! Prabho, he has formidable warriors like Angadha, and Hanuman, who is unconquerable on the battlefields, still you believe him as a mortal, kindly leave your pride and arrogance. Oh! Prabho, you have turned hostile to Lord of Raghu, like death has taken over you, the light of wisdom has disappeared from your mind. Oh! Prabho, death does not punish the Jeeva with vicious weapons, it steals intellect, wisdom, virtues, strength, and reasoning ability and it punishes only the Jeeva who has fallen as the victim of illusion/attachment to worldly matters and bondage.”

Chapter - 36– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Devi Mandodhari describes the splendor of Rama

The mighty Vanara Angadha, son of Vali returned to Lord Rama, prostrated at his lotus feet in extreme devotion, his eyes were full of tears, experienced a sudden rush of thrill through his limbs. It was the hours of dusk, Ravana haughtily returned to the place of Devi Mandodhari who once again advised Ravana “Oh! Beloved Lord, leave your animosity against Lord Sri Ramachandra which is going out of your control, ponder over the might of Lakshman who drew a thin line which you could not even cross it, do you expect to defeat him on the battlefield? You have seen the might of the messengers of Rama, you have seen the might of Vanara fearlessly entered in the palace, destroyed your pleasure garden, killed several demons, and set fire to Lanka.  Oh! Prabho, your son Akshakumara was mercilessly killed in the fight and your city was burnt into ashes, where was your might at that time? Kindly leave your pride and arrogance, do not engage in self-praise, Oh! Prabho, do not consider Rama as an ordinary human, King of Ayodhya, he is the Lord of Universe, he is the protector of animate and inanimate things, he is unconquerable, Mareecha has experienced the might of his powerful arrows, but you did not understand a single word I have uttered. Oh! Prabho, do not misjudge Rama as a mortal, do you remember, Janaka’s assembly was crowded with powerful rulers of incomparable might, and you were also there, and you have witnessed how did Rama broke the Shivadhanuss, and wedded Devi Vidhehi. If you are so powerful why you didn’t defeat him in the crowded assembly of Janaka? Oh! Prabho, Jayantha/the son of Lord Indra has experienced the might of that Lord who invoked Astra in the grass, that took one of his eyes. Oh! Prabho, you have witnessed the pathetic state of your sister Shoorpanakha who went to amuse the Lord, with her misdemeanor she was got disfigured, even after all these, you did not understand the might of Rama, and still consider him as a mortal.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – Angadha praising the splendor of Rama and leaving the assembly of Ravana

Chapter - 35– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Angadha praising the splendor of Rama and leaving the assembly of Ravana

Meghanatha and several mighty demons haughtily rose from their seats, tried their luck to pull back the foot of Angadha that was firmly fixed in the middle of the assembly were failed miserably, eventually, all of them returned head hung down in utter disappointment. Angadha’s foot was firm in the ground, as if the heart of ascetic who abandoned the worldly matters and bondage, contemplating upon the supreme Bhramam. Ravana’s pride began to melt away watching the might of Angadha, the entire assembly was horror-struck watching the Vanara, at that moment, Ravana rose from his throne and approached Angadha was welcomed with a harsh speech “Oh! Fool, ten-headed demons, do not cling at my feet, I can’t save you from the grief, why don’t you approach Lord of Raghu and take shelter at his feet?” Ravana felt ashamed listening to the malicious comment of a Vanara, all his enthusiasms faded away instantly, like the moon in the midday. He returned to his throne head hung down as if somebody has looted all his wealth. Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Uma, the supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra is the Lord of the Universe, he is the Lord of animate and inanimate things in the Universe, how can the Jeeva live in peace after keeping hostility against that Lord? The functions of the Universe such as creation, preservation, dissolution, happen at the mere movement of the eyebrows of that Lord. He is capable to transform the blade of grass into a fierce weapon, and vice versa, although Angadha made all efforts to convince Ravana about the might of the supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra was fallen on deaf ears, finally he praised the splendor of Lord Rama before leaving the assembly of Ravana.” Angadha spoke “Oh! Dhashanan, it is worthless to prove my might before you or self-praise my valor, I have no intention to take away your life without sporting with you on the battlefield.” Thus, Angadha took a flight from the assembly, Ravana came to know the death of Prahastha at the hands of Angadha, could not control his grief, the ministers were equally grown nervous watching the might of Angadha.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – Angadha invites demons for the display of their might in the assembly of Ravana

Chapter - 34– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Angadha invites demons for the display of their might in the assembly of Ravana

Angadha spoke fervently “Oh! Dhashakanda, how did you call Lord Rama is mortal, even after he killed Vali with the single shot of arrow?. You are blind even after possessing twenty eyes, your birth is vain, you are a curse on your mother’s womb. Oh! Wicked, Rama’s powerful arrows are hungry of your blood, hence I am leaving you unhurt, I am well capable to tackle your arrogance, but I haven’t received the permission of the Lord to smack your face. My anger is enough to cut off your ten heads and hurl your city of Lanka into the ocean. Your Lanka is like the fruit of an Udumbara tree, it is the dwelling place of unruly and haughty demons. I am a Vanara, I don’t need much time to scatter you all, but I have not obtained permission from the compassionate Lord Sri Ramachandra.” Ravana smiled and spoke sarcastically “Oh!  Vanara, where did you learn to praise your might? Vali was not like you. I think the association with those two hermits made you attention-seeker.” Angadha was extremely infuriated stepped in the middle of the assembly “Oh! Fool, I am a boaster, Oh! Demon with twenty arms, let me see the might of your arms if you are strong enough to move my foot if so, I promise you Rama and his entire army of Vanaras and bears will return without Devi Sita.” Ravana shrieked in anger, “Oh! Demons, seize the Vanara, seize on his leg and thrash him on the ground.” Soon, Indrajeeth and several mighty demons approached Angadha and tried all their tricks to move Angadha’s foot that was firmly set on the middle of the assembly, after sometimes they returned to their seats with their head hung down. The enemies of deities, the demons approached Angadha in large numbers were failed miserably and returned to their seats. Sage Kakabhusundi speaks “Oh! Garuda, the ill-fated, wicked, haughty, and deceitful could not uproot the tree of pure devotion in the heart of Angadha.”

Chapter - 33– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Angadha’s harsh speech in the assembly of Ravana

The son of Lord Vayu, Hanuman gathered those sparkling gems from the sky, and produced it before Lord Sri Ramachandra. The Vanaras and bears stood astounded watching the dazzling beauty of the crown pieces, on the other side, Ravana was felt humiliated by Angada, shrieked out in anger to his attendants, while Angadha stood smiling at him “Don’t leave the wicked Vanara, cease him and kill him. Don’t leave this Vanara, after that proceed to kill all those Vanaras and bears marched towards Lanka. Go and capture all the Vanara and bears, and devour them. It is my order, capture the two hermits alive, and bring them before my assembly.” Angadha was infuriated “Oh! Fool, aren’t you ashamed of your arrogance and ignorance? you are the destroyer of your clan, your heart did not get troubled watching my might? You are the storehouse of sins, lust, desire, ego, pride, jealousy, Ahamkara, and Mamakara. You have set eyes on the wife of a stranger, you have stolen her in the absence of her husband, you are out of mind, the death is hanging above your head. Oh! Wicked demon, you will reap the fruits of your vicious deeds, soon the mighty army of Vanaras and bears would punish you for that, I wonder your speech did not stop when you have uttered ‘Rama is mortal’, your tongue did not twist while speaking nonsense about the Lord. It is definite that your tongue along with your heads rolls on the battlefield.”
