Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Khara and Dhooshana gets annoyed listening to the daring message of Rama

Chapter – 18– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Khara and Dhooshana gets annoyed listening to the daring message of Rama

Rama coiled his matted hair locks on the pinnacle of the head after wielding the formidable bow, the array of demons seemed like the collection of snakes in the mountain of emerald challenging against the streaks of lightning, Rama tied the quiver on his waist, holding bow and arrow in his powerful arms aiming at the enemies, he stared at the enemies like the lion prepared to pounce upon the herd of elephants. The haughty demons approached Rama cheering “capture him! Capture him!” as if nearing the blazing sun. The demons who appeared with vicious weapons could not release their weapons against Rama, they became powerless before the Lord. Khara and Dhooshana ordered his men “The two princes are the ornament of the human race, don’t leave them. We have seen Naga, deities, humans, Rishis, and Sages in this part of Panchavati, and we have eradicated many lives, honestly, we have not seen such a charming prince in our lives, even though he disfigured our sister, he does not deserve death punishment, he is an extraordinary human being.” Khara and Dhushana instructed his men to deliver a message to Rama “Surrender to us at once, or leave the forest with your wife and brother.” Rama replied to the messengers smilingly “Oh! Fools, we are Kshatriyas, born to fight against enemies. We conduct expeditions to the woods hunting for animals, and we are well prepared to hunt down the demons like you too. We don’t get intimidated by the tactics of our enemies or do not flee back at the strength of our enemies, we would face the enemies with courage and meet death on the battlefield. Though we are humans, we have been born to eradicate the haughty demons on Earth. You all look youthful, but no power is vested in you, so go back to your homes and save your lives. I don’t kill enemies who flee from the battleground, any way you have brought this fight with me, hence I do not leave my enemies without showing my compassion to them.” The messengers returned with the message of Rama, that was infuriated Khara and Dhushana.

Chapter – 17– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– The demons Khara and Dhooshana arrives with multitudes of the army of demons to fight against Rama

Lakshman immediately after receiving the orders from Rama, cut off the nose and ears of Shoorpanakha effortlessly, in this way he has invited enmity of the mighty demon King Ravana that was predestined by Lord Sri Hari. Shoorpanakha was bleeding without nose and ears, resembled a huge mountain of red-colored water streaming down, she went sobbing to Khara and Dhooshana “Oh! Brothers, shame to your manhood and valor.” Khara and Dhooshana worriedly enquired about her pitiable state were described the whole incident that happened in the Panchavati. Soon Khara and Dhooshana gathered multitudes of the army of demons of dreadful appearance of mountain-sized, holding several vicious weapons, mounted on various vehicles procced to the Panchavati, on their way they found several inauspicious omens but did not get discouraged as if they were rushing to the mouth of death. The multitude of the army of demons was in extreme joy, rushed to the site cheering “Let us capture the two brothers, and kill them”, the sky was covered in the dust raised from their vehicles. Rama advised Lakshman to take Devi Janaki to the mountain cave, “Oh! Thatha, keep yourself and Devi Janaki safe, there are multitudes of the army of demons are approaching us.” Lakshman wielded in bow and arrow moved to the mountain cave with Devi Sita, when Rama saw the multitudes of demons approaching, he stretched the powerful bow aiming at them.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Shoorpanakha meets Rama and Lakshman in the Panchavati

Chapter – 16– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Shoorpanakha meets Rama and Lakshman in the Panchavati

Rama speaks “Oh! Lakshman, whoever worships me with word, mind, and deed, and completely surrendered to me, I will stay in their lotus-like hearts.” Lakshman was highly delighted to listen to the significance of Bhakti/devotion, reverentially prostrated at the lotus feet of Rama. In this way, days were passed engaged in lectures on spiritual wisdom, Bhakti, Vairagya, virtues, and morality, etc. The notorious King of Lanka, Ravana had a wicked sister Shoorpanakha, as the name indicates she had overly grown big ugly nails capable of winnowing like the fan, and she is cruel as a venomous serpent. Once, she arrived in Panchavati and met the two charming brothers, immediately she had fallen in love with them. Sage Kakabhusundi speaks “Oh! Garuda, women get easily passionate about things and people, cannot restrain their fiery passion, even if it is her father, son, brother, or stranger. The wicked female demon Shoorpanakha assumed the form of a beautiful woman and approached the two brothers with a sweet coated word “Oh! Dear charming fellows, there is no one handsome as you and there is no woman beautiful as me in these three worlds, the creator has done a painstaking job by creating us, I have searched for a charming pair for me in all three worlds, alas! I did not find a single one appropriate for me, hence I have remained a spinster all my life, Oh! Charming ones, my eyes set on you after seeing your attractiveness.” Rama looked at Devi Sita and spoke meekly “My younger brother is unmarried; you can approach him.” Shoorpanakha went closer to Lakshman who was well aware of the wickedness of Shoorpanakha as the sister of their enemy, he looked at Lord Rama and spoke softly “Oh! Beautiful lady, I am a humble servant of my master, I am not independent to act or think, if you have chosen me, I assure you will have no comforts in life. My master is the illustrious King of Kosalapura, whatever he does worthy of him. A servant like me can’t aspire for richness, honor, or fame, only the crooked ones achieve all these by milking their Master.” Again, Shoorpanakha returned to Rama in desperation, eventually, she was sent back to Lakshman was advised “Oh! Devi, Rama alone can do something, rest are incapable”. In this way, Shoorpanakha was sent back and forth for quite some time, she got really annoyed, revealed her dreadful appearance before Rama and Devi Sita. The merciful Lord noticed Devi Sita was terrified at the sight of Shoorpanakha, hence Lord of Raghu instructed Lakshman with his usual gestures.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Rama describes the splendor of Bhakti/devotion

Chapter – 15– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama describes the splendor of Bhakti/devotion

Rama spoke “Oh! Lakshman, ultimately the powerful Maya causes Bandha/bondage and the knowledge of Parmarththa provides Moksha/liberation from the grief of worldly existence.  The destruction of impurities of mind such as Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara,  is achieved through the various austerities and vows, Shama, Dhama, Dhanam, Dhaya, Ahimsa, Astheyam, Arjjavam, Thithiksha, Bhramacharya, Bhramavichara, being in the association of learned, noble souls, Santh, Mahathma, growing dispassionate to material matters, of wealth, richness, fame, money, children, wife, companion and relatives, etc.. are the source of Bhakti/devotion, Gnana/wisdom, and Vairagya. Veda emphasizes that the dispassion/Vairgaya brings virtues, the spiritual wisdom comes from Shamadhamadhi, austerities, meditation, results in liberation from the grief of worldly existence. Oh! Dear brother, the Bhakti/ devotion is the one that highly pleases me, it is superior to the practice of Gnana/Paramarththa Thaththva and Vijjana. Bhakti is beyond comparison, it is the source of bliss that can be achieved only with the association of preceptor, noble souls, Santh, Mahathma, hence Bhakti is the easiest way to attain the all-pervasive Bhramam. Whoever sincerely follow the spiritual and religious rites prescribed in the Veda, according to their own Varnna, and whoever honors the Bhramins well-versed in Veda and spiritual rites, grow dispassionate/Vairagya, abandon the interest in worldly matters and pleasures, would achieve Bhakti/devotion which is the easiest way to attain my grace. Oh! Thatha, there are nine kinds of Bhakti/Navadhabhakthi, such as 1)Shravanam/listening to the glorious myths of supreme Lord, 2) Keerthanam/singing in praise of the glories of Lord 3) Smaranam/meditation 4)Padhasevanam/worship of lotus feet 5) Archanam/worship of idol 6)Vandhanam/prostration before the deity 7)Dhasyam/worship of Lord with the feeling of a servant, 8) Sakhyam/worship of Lord with the feeling of companion and finally 9) Athmanivedhanam/complete surrender at the lotus feet of Lord. Oh! Lakshman, mere listening to my glorious myths would cultivate Bhakti in the mind of Jeeva, the selfless service to noble souls, preceptors, Santh, and Mahathma, with body, mind, and deed removes the impurities of the mind. Oh! Thatha, I get highly pleased with my ardent devotees, who envisage me in all the animate and inanimate things, and render selfless service to the preceptor, king, parents, noble souls, Bhramins and deities, finally, whoever remembers me with tears on their eyes, voice choked on the throat, with the rush of thrill through their limbs, would achieve my eternal presence.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Rama shed light on Paramarththa Thaththva – Jeevathma and Paramathma – Indestructible Purusha/Paramathma and destructible Prakrithi/material matters

Chapter – 14– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama shed light on Paramarththa Thaththva – Jeevathma and Paramathma – Indestructible Purusha/Paramathma and destructible Prakrithi/material matters

Lakshman spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, kindly describe Paramathma/supreme soul and Jeevathma/individual soul, so that I may achieve Bhakti/devotion at your lotus feet, and thereby get rid of ignorance, grief, and sufferings of worldly existence.” Rama spoke compassionately “Oh! Dear brother, Lakshman, I shall explain them briefly, listen to them carefully, Oh! Thatha, the feeling of ‘I’ ‘You’ ‘Me’ ‘Mine’, are the concepts of illusion/Maya, which is influenced by all the living beings in this Universe, none is free from my powerful Maya. Whatever is perceived by the mind, and witnessed are persuaded by Maya/illusion. Oh! Thatha, ignorance is grief, lack of spiritual wisdom, knowledge of ‘self’/self-realization/Athmavichara and God-realization/Paramarththa Thaththva, the absence of knowledge of Jeevathma is the inseparable part of that all-pervasive Bhramam/Paramathma, heaves the Jeeva into repeated cycles of births and compel to undergo sufferings and grief of worldly existence. The knowledge of self, and the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, the three attributes known as Rajasik, Thamasik, and Sathvik controlled by the Supreme Lord, the supreme wisdom known as Paramarththa Thaththva, the knowledge of all-pervasive Bhramam/Oneness-in-all, removes the impurities of Kama/lust, Krodha/anger, Lobha/greed, Moha/desire, Madha/pride Mathshcharya/jealousy, Ahamkara/ego, Mamakara /arrogance in the Jeeva. Oh! Lakshman, whoever attained that supreme wisdom, Oneness-in-all, and the knowledge of destructible Prakrithi/material matters, money, richness, wealth, fame, etc. and the indestructible Purusha/Paramathma/supreme soul would achieve dispassion, outshines the three attributes, abandon the interest in worldly matters and attachment to material matters like a grass.”

Chapter – 13– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Lakshman appeals to Rama to describe Bhakti, Gnana, and Vairagya

Rama along with Devi Sita and Lakshman arrived on the riverbank of Godavari, Lakshman constructed a beautiful hermitage for Lord. Rama met Jatayu, the King of birds and Rama have developed a close bond in a short period of time. Soon after the arrival of Rama in the Panchavati, the Sages and Rishis lived in the forest became happy, started moving freely, and performing austerities and Tapasya without the fear of demons. The entire forest flourished with an abundance of green, the trees and plants loaded with flowers and fruits, nestled by different species of birds and packed with the buzzing of honey bees, the streams, rivers, ponds were brimming with crystal clear water invited various species of animals to settle near the riverbank. The richness and beauty of the Panchavati grown beyond description in the presence of Rama, even thousand tongued Adhishesha would find it difficult to describe them. Once, Lord Rama was sitting at ease, Lakshman approached the Lord with innocent words “Oh! Prabho, you are the Lord of Lords, you are the Lord of animate and inanimate things, you are the Lord of creator and protector as well, Oh! Prabho, kindly teach me how can I practice worship at your lotus feet? Kindly describe the spiritual wisdom/Bhramavichara, dispassion/Vairagya, and Maya/illusion, and most importantly the practice of devotion/Bhakti, to achieve your eternal grace.”

Chapter – 12– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Sage Agasthya instructs Rama to live in Panchavati situated in the Dhandaka forest

Rama took a seat in the middle of the assembly of Sages, all the Sages fixed their gaze on the marvelous appearance of Rama, like the Chakora birds yearningly look at the autumn moon. The Lord of Raghu began to speak amiably “Oh! Mahathma, Oh! Prabho, I have nothing to hide from you, and you all know the purpose of my visit to the glorious Dhandakavana, Oh! Prabho, kindly advise me how can I eradicate the enemies of the hermits in the forest.” Sage Agasthya smiled at Rama and began to speak “Oh! Rama, you are the destroyer of evils, you have sought after my advice due to your virtues and amiability, Oh! Prabho, your glories are endless, I know very little of them. You are Mayapathi, your Maya resembles the huge Audhumbara tree, and the multitudes of Universes are the fruit of that tree, the animate and inanimate things in the Universe are the insects’ dwells inside those succulent fruits like Universe, hence they have limited knowledge of you. Oh! Prabho, the ‘Time’/Kalachakra, devours the insects like animate and inanimate things dwell inside the succulent fruits, yet that ‘Time’ is under your control. Oh! Prabho, you are the Lord of ten directions, yet you are seeking my opinion as an ordinary human being. Oh! Prabho, you are an ocean of mercy, kindly provide us the boon of intense devotion at your lotus feet, dispassion and close association with the Santh, Mahathma, and noble souls, and your eternal presence with Goddess Sita, and Lakshman in our hearts. Oh! Prabho, you are that supreme Bhramam perceived by the Santh Mahathma and noble souls undertaking austerities, Tapasya, vows, celibacy, Shamadhamadhi, etc, Oh! Prabho, you have a marvelous appearance that entices the whole Universe, you have been too kind and compassionate to your devotees always, hence you have decided to seek my advice. Oh! Lord of Raghu, this is one of the marvelous forests called Panchavati, situated in the Dhandaka forest, you have sanctified this forest with your footprints, and removed this beautiful land from the curse of Shukracharya. Oh! Prabho, kindly reside in Panchavati, and consider it as your abode to undertake austerities and penances, and thereby shower your auspicious grace on all these Sages residing in the Panchavati.” Rama after receiving permission from Sage Agasthya proceeded to Panchavati.
