Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Rama shed light on Paramarththa Thaththva – Jeevathma and Paramathma – Indestructible Purusha/Paramathma and destructible Prakrithi/material matters

Chapter – 14– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama shed light on Paramarththa Thaththva – Jeevathma and Paramathma – Indestructible Purusha/Paramathma and destructible Prakrithi/material matters

Lakshman spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, kindly describe Paramathma/supreme soul and Jeevathma/individual soul, so that I may achieve Bhakti/devotion at your lotus feet, and thereby get rid of ignorance, grief, and sufferings of worldly existence.” Rama spoke compassionately “Oh! Dear brother, Lakshman, I shall explain them briefly, listen to them carefully, Oh! Thatha, the feeling of ‘I’ ‘You’ ‘Me’ ‘Mine’, are the concepts of illusion/Maya, which is influenced by all the living beings in this Universe, none is free from my powerful Maya. Whatever is perceived by the mind, and witnessed are persuaded by Maya/illusion. Oh! Thatha, ignorance is grief, lack of spiritual wisdom, knowledge of ‘self’/self-realization/Athmavichara and God-realization/Paramarththa Thaththva, the absence of knowledge of Jeevathma is the inseparable part of that all-pervasive Bhramam/Paramathma, heaves the Jeeva into repeated cycles of births and compel to undergo sufferings and grief of worldly existence. The knowledge of self, and the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, the three attributes known as Rajasik, Thamasik, and Sathvik controlled by the Supreme Lord, the supreme wisdom known as Paramarththa Thaththva, the knowledge of all-pervasive Bhramam/Oneness-in-all, removes the impurities of Kama/lust, Krodha/anger, Lobha/greed, Moha/desire, Madha/pride Mathshcharya/jealousy, Ahamkara/ego, Mamakara /arrogance in the Jeeva. Oh! Lakshman, whoever attained that supreme wisdom, Oneness-in-all, and the knowledge of destructible Prakrithi/material matters, money, richness, wealth, fame, etc. and the indestructible Purusha/Paramathma/supreme soul would achieve dispassion, outshines the three attributes, abandon the interest in worldly matters and attachment to material matters like a grass.”

Chapter – 13– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Lakshman appeals to Rama to describe Bhakti, Gnana, and Vairagya

Rama along with Devi Sita and Lakshman arrived on the riverbank of Godavari, Lakshman constructed a beautiful hermitage for Lord. Rama met Jatayu, the King of birds and Rama have developed a close bond in a short period of time. Soon after the arrival of Rama in the Panchavati, the Sages and Rishis lived in the forest became happy, started moving freely, and performing austerities and Tapasya without the fear of demons. The entire forest flourished with an abundance of green, the trees and plants loaded with flowers and fruits, nestled by different species of birds and packed with the buzzing of honey bees, the streams, rivers, ponds were brimming with crystal clear water invited various species of animals to settle near the riverbank. The richness and beauty of the Panchavati grown beyond description in the presence of Rama, even thousand tongued Adhishesha would find it difficult to describe them. Once, Lord Rama was sitting at ease, Lakshman approached the Lord with innocent words “Oh! Prabho, you are the Lord of Lords, you are the Lord of animate and inanimate things, you are the Lord of creator and protector as well, Oh! Prabho, kindly teach me how can I practice worship at your lotus feet? Kindly describe the spiritual wisdom/Bhramavichara, dispassion/Vairagya, and Maya/illusion, and most importantly the practice of devotion/Bhakti, to achieve your eternal grace.”

Chapter – 12– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Sage Agasthya instructs Rama to live in Panchavati situated in the Dhandaka forest

Rama took a seat in the middle of the assembly of Sages, all the Sages fixed their gaze on the marvelous appearance of Rama, like the Chakora birds yearningly look at the autumn moon. The Lord of Raghu began to speak amiably “Oh! Mahathma, Oh! Prabho, I have nothing to hide from you, and you all know the purpose of my visit to the glorious Dhandakavana, Oh! Prabho, kindly advise me how can I eradicate the enemies of the hermits in the forest.” Sage Agasthya smiled at Rama and began to speak “Oh! Rama, you are the destroyer of evils, you have sought after my advice due to your virtues and amiability, Oh! Prabho, your glories are endless, I know very little of them. You are Mayapathi, your Maya resembles the huge Audhumbara tree, and the multitudes of Universes are the fruit of that tree, the animate and inanimate things in the Universe are the insects’ dwells inside those succulent fruits like Universe, hence they have limited knowledge of you. Oh! Prabho, the ‘Time’/Kalachakra, devours the insects like animate and inanimate things dwell inside the succulent fruits, yet that ‘Time’ is under your control. Oh! Prabho, you are the Lord of ten directions, yet you are seeking my opinion as an ordinary human being. Oh! Prabho, you are an ocean of mercy, kindly provide us the boon of intense devotion at your lotus feet, dispassion and close association with the Santh, Mahathma, and noble souls, and your eternal presence with Goddess Sita, and Lakshman in our hearts. Oh! Prabho, you are that supreme Bhramam perceived by the Santh Mahathma and noble souls undertaking austerities, Tapasya, vows, celibacy, Shamadhamadhi, etc, Oh! Prabho, you have a marvelous appearance that entices the whole Universe, you have been too kind and compassionate to your devotees always, hence you have decided to seek my advice. Oh! Lord of Raghu, this is one of the marvelous forests called Panchavati, situated in the Dhandaka forest, you have sanctified this forest with your footprints, and removed this beautiful land from the curse of Shukracharya. Oh! Prabho, kindly reside in Panchavati, and consider it as your abode to undertake austerities and penances, and thereby shower your auspicious grace on all these Sages residing in the Panchavati.” Rama after receiving permission from Sage Agasthya proceeded to Panchavati.

Chapter – 11– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama arrives in the hermitage of Sage Agasthya

Sage Sutheekshana spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Rama, kindly reside in my heart with Goddess Janaki, and Lakshman, wielded in bow and arrow, followed by your young brother Lakshman and Devi Sita, like a moon in my heart free from passion.” Lord Rama replied courteously “So be it !/Yevamasthu!” further they have conducted a visit to the hermitage of Sage Kumbhaja/Agasthya, Sage Sutheekshna spoke “Oh! Prabho, it has been so long that I did not make a visit to my preceptor Sage Agasthya, Oh! Prabho, if you do not mind, I would like to accompany you to the hermitage of Sage Agasthya.” The Supreme Lord who is the ocean of mercy understood the yearning of the Sage to be with him, he looked at Lakshman and smiled at each other thinking of the cleverness of the Sage, finally, Sage Sutheekshna delightfully followed them to the hermitage of Sage Agasthya. Thus, they have arrived in the hermitage of Sage Agasthya, immediately after seeing his preceptor Sage Sutheekshna prostrated before him and spoke with folded hands “Oh! Prabho, the two sons of Kosaladheesha King Dhasharatha, the sustainer of the Universe has come to visit you, Oh! Prabho, Lord Sri Ramachandra, accompanied by his younger brother Lakshman and Devi Vaidhehi whose names you pronounce day and night has arrived in your hermitage.” As soon as the Sage heard the name of Rama, he abruptly rose from the seat and rushed to meet them, Sage’s eyes welled up in tears at the very sight of Lord Hari. The two brothers reverentially prostrated at the lotus feet of Sage Agasthya was raised from the ground and embraced in utmost affection. Sage Agasthya enquired their welfare, and led them inside the hermitage, offered a seat and worshiped them in many ways, and began to speak “There is no one in the Universe fortunate than me.” The Sages assembled gazed at the loveliness and modesty of Rama who is the ocean of mercy.

Sage Sutheekshna repeatedly prostrated at the lotus feet of Lord Rama, and took Rama to his hermitage, received him with great honor. Sage Sutheekshna spoke “Oh! Prabho, how can I eulogize your glories? You are beyond description, if I make an attempt to describe your splendor that would be my foolishness, like the firefly competing with the brightness of the sun. Oh! Prabho, I shall meditate upon the Supreme Lord Rama, Lord of Raghu's, who has attractive blue limbs resemble freshly formed dark clouds, attired in a saffron robe, adorned in matted hair locks, wielded in bow and arrow on one hand, and the quiver tied on the waist. He is supreme Bhramam resemble the woodfire that burns the forest like delusion in the Jeeva, you are the sun that causes to blossom the lotus-like hearts of the Sages and Rishis, you resemble the lion that kills the heard of elephants like demons, you resemble the king of birds chase its prey, may that supreme Lord protect us always! I shall meditate upon Lord Rama who has beautiful eyes that resemble red lotus flower petals, he is attired in magnificent clothes, resembles the full moon to the Chakora like eyes of Devi Sita, he resembles swan that takes pleasure in Manasarovar like the heart of Lord Shiva. He has a wide chest, long arms, and strong shoulder, he resembles the King of birds that devour the serpent-like misconception of the Jeeva, he removes conflicts and despair, he liberates the Jeeva from the repeated cycles of rebirths, he is the delight of deities and Raghu’s clan, he is an embodiment of kindness and compassion, may that supreme Lord protect us always! I shall sing in praise of Lord Sri Ramachandra who reduces the burden of Earth, he has Saguna and Nirgunaswaroopa as well, he is all-pervasive supreme Bhramam which is the source of functioning of the mind, intellect, Chitta, Ahamkara, Karma and Gnanendhriya, and Prana. He is pure and unblemished, free from afflictions, changeless, has neither birth nor death. He resembles wish-fulfilling Kalpathru to his ardent devotees, he removes the impurities of Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara of the Jeeva, he is the safest bridge to cross the ocean of worldly existence, may that delight of solar race protects us always! I shall meditate upon the Supreme Lord Rama who has powerful arms, immense valor, he is the essence of righteousness, virtues, whose very name remove the evil effects of Kali era may propitious to us always! I shall pray to that supreme Lord Rama who is the slayer of Khara and Dhooshana, he is all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, pure, unblemished, dispassionate, changeless, reside as a soul in the Jeeva, gracefully moving all over the woods with Devi Sita and young brother Lakshman may reside in my heart always! I shall meditate upon the Supreme Lord Rama who is Saguna and Nirgunaswaroopa, reside as a soul in the Jeeva, and the knower of all hearts, that lotus-eyed Lord of Kosala may take up his abode in my heart as well! I shall earnestly pray for the perpetual devotion at the lotus feet of Rama which remind me always that I am the servant of my Master Lord Raghu, even in the hours of bad luck.” Lord Rama was highly pleased with the devotion of Sage Sutheekshna, he embraced the Sage again and again and spoke “Oh! Mahatma, I am highly pleased with your devotion, you may kindly ask for a boon.” Sage replied fervently “Oh! Prabho, I have never desired for a boon, you are the delighter of your devotees, Oh! Lord of Raghu, kindly provide me a boon which pleases you.” Lord Raghu spoke “Oh! Mahathma, may you become the repository of virtues, wisdom, intense devotion, and dispassion!” Sage Sutheekshna overwhelmed with various emotions, and spoke in tears “Oh! Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – The legend of Sage Sutheekshna, a learned disciple of Sage Agasthya

Chapter – 9– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– The legend of Sage Sutheekshna, a learned disciple of Sage Agasthya

Rama promised the Rishis and Sages assembled that he will make sure the forest is free from the haughty demons, which would make the life of the Sages and Rishis peaceful to conduct austerities and Tapasya. He took a visit of the hermitage of the Sages who lived in the forest and it was extremely pleased the hermits. Sage Agasthya had a learned disciple Sutheekshna who is an ardent devotee of Rama by word, mind, and deed, came to know the visit of Rama immersed in various thoughts “Will Lord of Raghu who is the companion of the distressed souls approve me as his devotee and shower his grace? Will Rama and Lakshman approve wretched persons like me as their servants? I have no knowledge or wisdom, I have not practiced austerities or Tapasya, or dispassion/Vairagya, or Japa or Yoga, I haven’t been in the association of ascetics and sages, I have no firm devotion at the lotus feet of the Lord, all I have learned that the supreme Lord Ramachandra is merciful, whoever devoted to him would get rid of grief and sufferings of worldly existence. The mere thought of that benevolent Lord makes me feel that my eyes would receive the fortune to witness the lotus-like lovely face of that Lord, that is capable to provide liberation from worldly existence.” Lord Mahadeva spoke “Oh! Parvathi, Sage Sutheekshna drenched in extreme love and devotion for Rama, was beyond the description of words. He was not aware of the direction or did not make an effort to locate the route, he moved forward and backward aimlessly, immersed in the thought of Lord Sri Ramachandra, sing in praise of the Lord, and dancing all the way was watching the Lord hiding behind a tree. The compassionate Lord realized the state of extreme devotion of the Sage, soon dispelled the fear of transmigration of the Sage, revealed his form in the heart of the sage. The Sage sat down in the middle of the path entered into a trance, Lord Rama approached Sage Suteekshana and was delighted to see the devotion of the sage, Rama tried many ways to wake the Sage from the trance but the Sage could not wake out of the bliss. Soon, Rama appeared as Lord Vishnu with four arms in the heart of the Sage and disappeared, soon the Sage got out of the deep meditation in extreme agony, like the serpent lost its gem, witnessed Lord Rama along with Devi Sita and Lakshman before him. Sage Sutheekshna could not control his tears of love, overwhelmed with various emotions, fallen like a log at the lotus feet of the Lord. Rama raised the Sage from the ground and embraced him affectionately, which resembled the Thamala Vruksha in the embrace of the golden tree. Sage Sutheekshna gazed at the lovely face of Rama without blinking eyes and stood like a portrait.

Chapter – 8– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama witnesses the heap of skeletons in the dense wood

Sage Sharabhanga contemplated upon Rama “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sagunaroopa Srirama, kindly reside in my heart along with Devi Sita and Lakshman.” Thus, the Sage left his mortal coil in the fire of Yoga, with the grace of Lord attained Sri Vaikuntha, there were several Rishis and Sages assembled to witness the boon of devotion achieved by Sage Sharabhanga, they highly praised his devotion, austerities, and penance. The Rishis and Sages assembled were extremely delighted, praised “Glory to the sincere attendant to Lord Sri Ramachandra who is the ocean of mercy!’ Lord Rama along with Devi Sita and Lakshman proceeded to the dense wood, accompanied by several Rishis and Sages. On their way, Lord Raghu saw a heap of skeletons, and felt anxious, enquired about it to the Sages, was replied “Oh! Prabho, you are the knower of all, you are all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, these are the and skeletons of the sages devoured by the dreadful demons in the forest.” Rama’s eyes filled with tears listening to the Sages.
