Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Bala Kanda – King Janaka’s despair after not finding an appropriate groom for Janakanandhini

Chapter – 244– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Bala Kanda –  King Janaka’s despair after not finding an appropriate groom for Janakanandhini

King Janaka continued in utter despair “I have announced a lovely bride and marvelous gifts for whoever bends the unyielding bow of Lord Shiva, I feel Lord Bhrama has not created an appropriate groom who can win over the challenge and achieve my precious daughter as a wedded wife. I am extremely saddened to watch no one could move the bow an inch from its place or fasten or bend it. Pardon me, I feel there are no valorous men left on the Earth to lift the bow, fasten and bend it, kindly disperse the assembly immediately. I feel Devi Sita is not destined to marry, should remain unmarried all her life, If I have the knowledge that there are no powerful men left on the Earth, I would not have engaged in such a vow and made myself laughing stock before the huge crowd, now all my religious austerities would disappear once I revoke the vows.” All the women and men assembled were grief-stricken, looked at Janakanandhini in extreme anguish. On the other hand, Lakshman's face reddened in fury, his beautiful eyebrows curved in anger, his lips quivered in agitation.

The bow was unbending, the virtuous women looked at it without blinking their eyes followed by a prayer. The princes assembled of great fame, glory, and valor were attempted the same, presented themselves as a fool before the audience, unhappily returned to their seats. King Janaka who was sitting with the prominent people of the Kingdom, and preceptors, watching the whole scenario felt extremely disappointed, confused, and disheartened to see the end results. Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “ Oh! Mune, soon the big announcement reverberated in the atmosphere “Dear, Princes, and Kings assembled to attend the Dhanush Yajja, kindly listen to the vows of Vidheha Raja, whoever bends the powerful bow of mighty Lord Shiva would achieve Devi Janakanandhini as his wedded wife, hence display the mightiness of your arms before the audience and achieve fruitful results. The mightiness of the arms of King resembles the moon and the powerful bow of Lord Shiva represent Rahu which would cause afflictions, is massive and unbending, known to the world. The powerful kings Ravana and Banasura has miserably failed to lift it, and quietly slipped out of the arena. Whoever successfully complete the task would achieve daughter of Vidheha as a wedded wife followed with all honors and pride.” The Kings and princes assembled greedily set eyes on the bow and Devi Janaki, cheerfully rose from their seat one by one, re-arranging their heavy garments and ornaments adorned on their hefty bodies, approached the bow of Lord Shiva in a fury, looked at it in vehemence, made a futile effort to lift it, could not even move an inch from its place, eventually returned to their seats all exhausted head hung down in despair and some of them did not even approach the bow with an embarrassment.”

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Bharadhwaja, Devi Sita set a quick glance on the people assembled in the huge hall, became timid watching preceptors, Sages, Rishis, prominent members of the Kingdom, last but not the least the hero of the clan of Raghu's, soon contemplating upon that marvelous form of dark cloud complexioned Rama she turned towards her female companions. The audience watching the mesmerizing beauty of Jagadamba Paramba Bhagavathi Jagathjanani Devi Sita and Jagannatha Prabhu Sri Rama forgot to blink their eyes, transported to a state of extreme joy. All of them became anxious watching the gatherings of the Kings and princes who has arrived to participate in the Dhanur Yaga, sincerely prayed to Lord Bhrama “Oh! Paramathma, kindly remove the ignorance of King Janaka who has promised to give away his lovely daughter to the prince who bend the powerful bow of Lord Shiva, kindly make him revoke his decision to conduct Dhanur Yaga, so that Devi Sita could attain that supreme Lord Rama as her wedded husband, then the whole world will highly praise his intelligence and the very idea of finding an appropriate groom for Devi Sita would take place in a proper manner. If the King does not cancel the proposal of Yajja it may end in disaster, will bring ill-fame to him. All the audience has the collective opinion that the dark cloud complexioned Rama is the appropriate groom for Janakanandhini.” Janaka instructed his men to make further announcement of the Dhanur Yajja, the Kings and princes from the neighboring countries were introduced to the audience, and the rules and conditions of the Yajja was detailed, the audience doomed into deep despair thinking of the outcome of the Yajja.”

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Mune, if the churning conducted in the above said manner, there would be a fortune to achieve Goddess Mahalakshmi, who is the epitome of loveliness and delight, even though the poet would hesitatingly describe her as Paramba Jagadamba Bhagavathi Devi Sita. Thus, Jagathjanani accompanied by several female companions beautifully decorated in finest garments and ornaments entered the Yajja arena, a melodious song reverberated in the atmosphere. Devi Janaki attired in finest gem decorated garment, the mother of the Universe of exquisite beauty was adorned in various ornaments all over the body with great care by her companions, soon the men and women assembled were awe-struck watching the mesmerizing beauty of the Jagathjanani. The deities played various musical instruments, Apsaras danced to the beautiful music of Gandharvas and showered flowers on her. Devi Janaki was holding a stunning garland/Jayamala to adorn her future consort, she cast a hurried glance on the princes assembled in the arena. Devi Sita anxiously set eyes on Rama, while the rest of the princes were driven in their world of imagination. Thus, Devi Sita greedily set her eyes on her beloved consort with whom she was yearningly waiting for a reunion, was seated next to the Sage Vishwamithra.”

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks “Oh! Mune, thus the auspicious moment has arrived, King Janaka instructed his attendants to bring Devi Janaki with due honor, soon Devi Janaki Jagathjanani, Paramba Bhagavathi accompanied by several female companions arrived in the Yajja arena. The devotees of Lord Sri Hari spoke fervently “Oh! Princes, there is no doubt Rama would bend the powerful bow of Lord Shiva, and achieve Devi Janaki as his wedded wife, and remember none can withstand the valor and fearlessness of the sons of King Dasaratha. Hence, stop pouring hatred words, hunger cannot be satiated with the portrait of sweets and savories, kindly listen to our advice, Rama is none other than that supreme Bhramam, Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam personified as the son of Dasaratha. He is the essence of the Universe, and its living and non-living things, he is the mother and father of the Universe, he is the protector of the Universe, that Sachidhanandhaswaroopa Paramathma took birth as the son of Dasaratha in the illustrious Raghu clan for the welfare of the Universe, and reduce the burden of the Earth. He is the sole source of delight, welfare, to the creatures. He is the embodiment of bliss, virtues, fortune, and beauty, and he is beloved of Lord Shambhu. These two charming princes are the supreme Bhramam, resides in the heart of Lord Shambhu. Hence, it is vivid that no one would run after Mrigathrishna/mirage of water in the desert and face death, leaving the nectar-like Rama. Oh! Princes, do whatever as your wish, we have reaped the fruitfulness of our lives mere witnessing that Sacchidhanandhaswaroopa Paramathma personified as Rama and Lakshman.” The pious and noble King turned their affectionate gaze on the two charming princes, who have incomparable beauty and virtues.
