Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Rama describes the wilderness of the forest to Devi Sita

Chapter – 63- Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama describes the wilderness of the forest to Devi Sita

Rama spoke to Devi Sita affectionately “Oh! Devi, life in the forest is pretty hard, the plain ground will be the couch, the leaves and bark of trees will be the robe and shelter homes, the fiber roots, vegetables, and fruits available in the season makes the meal, and most of the fruits and vegetables are not available all year round, hence you have to get easily adapted to the life in the woods. The demons and carnivores assume various forms and chase the humans, the water from the hills is extremely cold and unpredictable, the difficulties involved in the wood are beyond description. There are wild birds, venomous serpents, dreadful demons, that are a constant threat to humans, even the courageous people get alarmed at the wilderness of the forest, Oh! Mrigalochani, you are too timid and delicate, you are not compatible to live in the woods. Oh! Beautiful one, the whole world would blame me if I take you to the forest, how did the swans in the Manasarovar lake that are used to consume the nectar-like water live in the salty ocean water? How did the cuckoo survive in rough bush? Oh! Devi, kindly take note of all these things and change your idea to follow me to the woods, and stay at the palace. Oh! Moon-like-faced-one, the life in the woods is beyond description.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Rama describes the importance to follow the advice of the preceptor, the words prescribed in the Veda and scriptures to Devi Sita

Chapter – 62– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Rama describes the importance to follow the advice of the preceptor, the words prescribed in the Veda and scriptures to Devi Sita

Rama spoke in a sweet tone “Oh! Devi Sita, whoever sincerely follow the advice of Guru/Preceptor, and the words prescribed in the Vedas would achieve all the auspiciousness, and never face any miseries in their lives. You might have heard the fate of King Nahusha, and Sage Galava who have suffered several hardships by disrespecting the advice of their preceptors.”

Sage Galava who have completed studies of Vedashasthra under the guidance of the illustrious Maharishi Vishwamithra, while leaving the hermitage of Guru forever, insisted Maharishi Vishwamithra ask for Gurudhakshina, but Maharishi gracefully refused to accept the Gurudhakshina. Galava was adamant not to leave the preceptor without offering the Guru Dhakshina. Finally, Maharishi Vishwamithra wanted to get rid of this disciple and instructed Galava to bring thousands of snow-white colored horses with black ears as Gurudhakshina, later Galava had to face several hardships to find the rare breed of horses and follow the order of his preceptor.

The illustrious King Nahusha was a pious and wise ruler, Lord Indra was afflicted with the Bhramahathya sin by slaying Vrathrasura and took shelter in the Manasarovar lake, the deities installed King Nahusha as the Lord of deities/Indra. Once, Nahusha met Devi Sachi and fallen at her beauty instantly, he could not withdraw his mind from the loveliness of her. Devi Sachi met Sage Brihaspati and sought protection from him, the deities advised Nahusha to leave his interest in Devi Sachi were fell on deaf ears. Devi Sachi requested King Nahusha to meet her in a palanquin carried by the illustrious Sages.   The King Nahusha was so obsessed with the loveliness of Devi Sachi readily agreed to meet her demand; thus, King left his abode in a palanquin carried by the Sages to meet Devi Sachi, on his way, the Sages have intentionally delayed the journey moving in a tortoise speed, King Nahusha was impatient to meet Devi Sachi, gave a kick on the shoulder of the sage who was carrying the palanquin. It was Sage Agasthya who got a hard kick on his shoulder from Nahusha cursed the King to become a python.

Rama continued “Oh! Sumukhi,/beautiful faced-one, Oh! Sayani, I will return from the woods immediately after completing the promise to my father, days will go without our knowledge, hence, wait for me patiently, and listen to my advice. Oh! Sundari, if you are not willing to follow my advice out of love and affection, you may grieve all your life. Oh! Devi, the dense forests are beautiful, although equally dangerous places to live, due to extreme heat, cold, sudden floods, fire, etc. Oh! Devi, the pathways are pretty rough, thorny, and we have to move without foot cover. Oh! Devi, your lotus feet are so soft and delicate, the pathways in the forest are extremely hard and difficult to cross, with the huge mountains, caves, streams, rivers, etc. are terribly unapproachable and dreadful. The sudden attacks from the wild animals such as tiger, lion, bear, elephants would take away the serenity of the mind of even the brave.”

Rama comforted Devi Kausalya with soothing words, then he moved to Devi Janaki and began to explain the dangers as well as the goodness of the life in the woods to her. Although Rama was reluctant to speak anything to his wife in the presence of his mother, he found the urgency of the situation required to explain the following “Oh! Devi, kindly listen to me, do not mistake me, if you wish wellness of me and the family, it is apt to live in the palace and serve your parents in law and take pleasure in the stately life. Oh! Virtuous lady, if you follow my words, you will get benefitted, there is no sacred duty other than serving husband and parents-in-law for a woman to achieve piousness in life. Oh! Devi, your presence with my mother is more important at this moment, whenever she loses her good self-grieving from the separation of her only son, you can help her to recover from the gloominess by explaining various legends from the scriptures, in that way, my mother Kausalya will regain her health and serenity. Oh! Sumukhi,/beautiful faced one, I wish you should follow my advice to stay with my mother, for the welfare of all.”

Chapter – 60– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya reveals her desire to keep Devi Sita in the palace and nurture her daughter-in-law who is dear as her life

Devi Kausalya spoke in a fervent tone “Oh! Dear son, how did the lovely life-giving creeper fit into the dense wood of wild animals, beasts, and toxic plants? The almighty Lord has created forest as the appropriate place for the tribe of Kola, Bhila, and Kirata girls, who are not aware of stately pleasures, they are like the insects live on the rock, do not find any hardship living in the woods. Another set of people is hermits who have renounced worldly matters, material pleasures, live in utmost serenity, conduct penance and austerities, undertake Shamadhamadhi, for the welfare of the Universe. Oh! Dear son, how did Devi Sita live in those woods, she is even afraid of watching the portrait of monkeys, how did the swan in the Manasarovar live in the muddy pool in the forest? Oh! Dear son, think about all those I have mentioned, after that, you make a decision, I will instruct Devi Janaki accordingly. If she decided to lives with us, that would be a great solace to us at this moment.” Lord of Raghu, Rama listened to those wise as well as affectionate words of Devi Kousalya resembled nectar to his ears.

Chapter – 59– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya praises the virtues and loveliness of Devi Sita

Devi Kausalya continued in a pleasing tone “Devi Sita’s father King Janaka is the jewel among the Kings, his father-in-law is the sun in the Raghukula, and you are that supreme Bhramam symbolizes wisdom, charm, virtues, personified as the delight of the Bhanukula, resemble the cool rays of moon to the lilies. Devi Sita is our beloved daughter-in-law, she is amiable, enriched with wisdom and virtues. She is the apple of my eyes, my life is vested in Janaki, I always loved her as dear as my life, I have nurtured her in many ways like a creeper/Kalpatharu, feeding with the water of affection, it was the appropriate moment that the creeper was about to bear fruit and flowers, the Almighty has changed his plans, turned against us and we do not what will be the consequences of all. Devi Sita has never set her feet on the ground, she was always been on my lap, on the cushioned bed, with rich well-decorated seats, and swings. I have nurtured her like a life-giving creeper to us, and I have never asked her to touch or turn the wick on the lamp, that Sita awaits to hear your orders. Oh! Lord of Raghu's, how did a female Chakora bird that loved to feed on nectar-like cool rays of the moon would gaze at the Sun?”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Devi Sita meets Devi Kausalya in her chamber

Chapter – 58– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Sita meets Devi Kausalya in her chamber

As soon as the news fell into the ears of Devi Sita, she rushed to the chamber of Mother Kausalya who was already besieged with extreme agony, she prostrated at the lotus feet of her mother-in-law, sat down on the floor head hung down in curiousness, and kept silent. Her mother-in-law poured blessings on her and gazed at her delicate limbs in deep distress. Devi Sita who is the personification of beauty, wisdom, and fortune, continued to speak lowering her head in a soft tone “The Lord of my life would depart to woods anytime, do not know who will have the fortune to accompany him, is that my body and soul together or my soul alone. The plans of Almighty are hardly perceivable.” As she was scratching the floor with her feet nails, the beautiful anklets adorned on her feet produced a melodious noise, the poets described them as it was sounded like Devi Sita was sincerely praying to her Lord not to leave her alone. Devi Sita’s beautiful eyes were overflown with tears, sat head hung down in utter grief, immediately Devi Kausalya broke the silence watching the pain of her daughter-in-law “Oh! Dear child, Devi Sita is too young and delicate, she is beloved of her father-in-law, and mother-in-law, and the whole family.”

Chapter – 57– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya grieving over the bad luck of the Kingdom of Ayodhya and its subjects

Devi Kausalya continued fervently “Oh! Dear child, I do not compel you with my false love, I sincerely request you to kindly do not leave your mother out of your thoughts. May all the deities and manes protect you in the woods! Oh! Lord of Earth, protect my child like the eyelids protects the eyes. Oh! Child, you are extremely kind and compassionate resemble the beautiful pond, the term of exile to wood appears as water in the pond, and the subjects of the Kingdom, dear and beloved ones in the Ayodhya are the fishes in the pond, hence do not forget them, return safely after the term to find them alive. Oh! Dear child, I advise you to proceed to the woods in great enthusiasm, leaving your attendants, family, and the city of Ayodhya. The fruits of meritorious deeds have perished today, and the tide of fortune has disappeared, leaving the bad luck.” Devi Kausalya continued to grieve, clasped the feet of Lord of Raghu, and felt like the most unfortunate woman, her heart was heavy, sunken in deep distress and agony, it was beyond description. Rama raised his mother, embraced her several times, and consoled her with soothing words.
