Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Ayodhya Kanda – Devi Sita meets Devi Kausalya in her chamber

Chapter – 58– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Sita meets Devi Kausalya in her chamber

As soon as the news fell into the ears of Devi Sita, she rushed to the chamber of Mother Kausalya who was already besieged with extreme agony, she prostrated at the lotus feet of her mother-in-law, sat down on the floor head hung down in curiousness, and kept silent. Her mother-in-law poured blessings on her and gazed at her delicate limbs in deep distress. Devi Sita who is the personification of beauty, wisdom, and fortune, continued to speak lowering her head in a soft tone “The Lord of my life would depart to woods anytime, do not know who will have the fortune to accompany him, is that my body and soul together or my soul alone. The plans of Almighty are hardly perceivable.” As she was scratching the floor with her feet nails, the beautiful anklets adorned on her feet produced a melodious noise, the poets described them as it was sounded like Devi Sita was sincerely praying to her Lord not to leave her alone. Devi Sita’s beautiful eyes were overflown with tears, sat head hung down in utter grief, immediately Devi Kausalya broke the silence watching the pain of her daughter-in-law “Oh! Dear child, Devi Sita is too young and delicate, she is beloved of her father-in-law, and mother-in-law, and the whole family.”

Chapter – 57– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya grieving over the bad luck of the Kingdom of Ayodhya and its subjects

Devi Kausalya continued fervently “Oh! Dear child, I do not compel you with my false love, I sincerely request you to kindly do not leave your mother out of your thoughts. May all the deities and manes protect you in the woods! Oh! Lord of Earth, protect my child like the eyelids protects the eyes. Oh! Child, you are extremely kind and compassionate resemble the beautiful pond, the term of exile to wood appears as water in the pond, and the subjects of the Kingdom, dear and beloved ones in the Ayodhya are the fishes in the pond, hence do not forget them, return safely after the term to find them alive. Oh! Dear child, I advise you to proceed to the woods in great enthusiasm, leaving your attendants, family, and the city of Ayodhya. The fruits of meritorious deeds have perished today, and the tide of fortune has disappeared, leaving the bad luck.” Devi Kausalya continued to grieve, clasped the feet of Lord of Raghu, and felt like the most unfortunate woman, her heart was heavy, sunken in deep distress and agony, it was beyond description. Rama raised his mother, embraced her several times, and consoled her with soothing words.

Chapter – 56– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya requests Rama to take her to the woods with him

Devi Kausalya spoke in a mild tone“Oh! Dear child, I do not feel sorry for the change of plan in crowning you as the King of Ayodhya, or exiling you to the woods for fourteen years, all that I am deeply concerned about the plight of Bharatha, the King, and the people of Ayodhya in your absence. It makes me worrisome, pushing me into a deep sense of grief. Anyway, your father’s command weighs important than the affection of a mother, therefore follow the command of your father. Oh! Dear child, you are proceeding to the woods with the blessings and permission of your father and mother, hence the woods would be equivalent to hundreds of cities of Ayodhya. The Vanadeva and Vanadevatha would be your father and mother in the woods, and all those Khaga/birds, animals, and demons would be waiting to achieve the loveliness of your lotus feet. Actually, in the latter years of the life of a king are advisable to live in the woods and pursue meditation, but you have chosen to live in the woods during your tender age, which makes me feel even more distressed. How blessed is the forest where you are going to live? And how unfortunate the city of Ayodhya in your absence? Oh! Raghuvamsathilaka, May I ask you something, could you please take me with you to the woods? You are supreme Bhramam, you are beloved of all, Oh! Dear child, you are the Prana of the Jeeva, therefore, if you leave me here and proceed to woods, I may repent all my life.”

Chapter – 55– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya was heart-broken to know the decision of the King, and appreciate Rama for his righteousness

Lakshman who is the son of Queen Sumithra, and a constant companion of Rama was standing beside him, after reading his brother’s eyes,  explained the reason for Rama’s exile from the Kingdom. Devi Kausalya became inconsolable; her state of mind was beyond description. Devi Kausalya was not in a position to abandon the decision that was already announced or send her son off to the woods gladly, she has experienced extreme pain in the chest “Everything seems to be erratic, as though somebody has taken the pen to write ‘moon’ was changed to ‘Rahu’ at the slip of the pen. The destiny written by the creator is difficult to understand.” Devi Kausalya was in the middle of her obligation to follow the instruction of the King and affection to her dearest son, she found herself in dilemma like the serpent stuck in the rathole, she began to think “If I stop Rama from leaving to woods, that would be a grievous offense to King and breaking the moral code prevailed in the clan of Raghu's, or it may even cause enmity between the brothers. On the other hand, If I willingly send Rama to follow his duty, I would be grieving from the pain of separation from him.” Devi Kausalya has experienced a deep sense of embarrassment and grief, soon she regained her consciousness, remembered her duty as the Queen of Ayodhya, considered Rama and Bharatha are not different from one another, the sinless Devi Kausalya spoke to Rama in a gentle manner “Oh! Dear son, you have done very well. Oh! Dear child, the foremost duty of a son is to follow the command of his father. Oh! Beloved child, I promise you, you have chosen the righteousness by following the command of your father as your prime duty.”

Chapter – 54– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya wailing at the decision of Rama to go to the woods

Rama spoke to Devi Kausalya “Oh! Mother, I will be back after fourteen years of life in the woods following the command of my father, I will be back at your lotus feet, kindly do not grieve on this matter.” The most pleasing and gentle words of Lord of Raghu, Rama was piercing the heart of Devi Kausalya, she was frightened, her face turned pale, her voice stuck in the throat like the Yavasaka plant get withered in the monsoon. The agony of Devi Kausalya was intolerable, and beyond description, like a doe heard the sudden roar of a lion. Her eyes overflooded with tears of grief, her limbs trembled in extreme anxiousness, like the fish out of the pond. Soon Devi Kausalya regained her normal self and spoke to him in anguish “Oh! Dear son, you are dear as life to your father who starts his day at the very sight of you, he has already arranged for a grand ceremony on an auspicious hour to crown you as the King of Ayodhya. What was your sin committed to proceed to the woods? Oh! Dear child, let me know everything in detail, who wished to feed the solar race with fire?”

Devi Kausalya spoke passionately “Oh! Dear child, the whole world is waiting impatiently like the pairs of Chathaka waiting for the droplets from the star Swathi during the Sharath Rithu, to witness the coronation ceremony of you as the King of Ayodhya. Oh! Thatha, Oh! Darling, take bath quickly and taste the sweet which is your favorite and proceed to meet your father. It is already late to begin the ceremony.” The affectionate words pouring out of the heart of Mother Kausalya were the blossoms of the wish-fulfilling Kalpatharu resembled the laden overflowing with the honey of joy, the fountain of prosperity, but the bee-like Rama’s mind could not lure those charm. Rama who is the essence of righteousness, virtue, honesty, beauty, and wisdom, spoke to his mother in a pleasing manner “Oh! Dear mother, father has bestowed me with the kingdom of the forest where there is an abundance of auspicious opportunities for me. Kindly give me your permission with a pleasant heart to proceed with it, so that I can attain all your blessings and joy. Oh! Mother, do not grieve out of fear or affection, I will be happy wherever I go with your blessings.”

Chapter – 52– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Ayodhya Kanda– Devi Kausalya’s overflowing affection for her son Rama

Sage Yajjavalkya speaks "Oh! Mune, as soon as Rama heard the news of exile to the woods from Devi Kaikeyi, he felt immensely happy, experienced that he has released from all bondage and his heart was brimming with joy. Oh! Mune, the Hero of Raghu’s race Raghuveera resembled the young elephant that was released from the chains of the regime of the Kingdom. The Raghukulathilaka Rama enthusiastically approached his mother, folded his palms together, and prostrated at the lotus feet of Devi Kausalya. She delightfully raised him from the floor, and embraced him, she scattered jewels around him as if removing the evil eyes on him and wished him to remain protected from all the troubles. Devi Kausalya kissed on his forehead several times and embraced him, her eyes were overflowing with tears of joy, she made him seated on her lap and embraced him, the affection of mother overflown in the form of milk from her bosom, her joy was beyond description as if a pauper received the status of Lord Kubera all of a sudden. Devi Kausalya fondly touched his forehead and spoke in a soft tone “Oh! Dear child, I adore you, tell me when will be the auspicious hours of the coronation ceremony are going to be held, that would be the highest reward of a human birth, the attainment of piety, virtues, and joy.”
