Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – Ravana’s battle against the mighty Vanaras

Chapter - 82– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Ravana’s battle against the mighty Vanaras

The Vanaras resembled death on the battlefield, covered their huge bodies in the blood, roared like thunder clouds, crushed the demons under their feet and limbs, slapped and tore off their bodies with their sharp nails and teeth, adopted all the techniques to eliminate the enemies. The Vanaras and bears produced shrill cries seized the demons, ripped off their bellies, and hung their intestine as a garland around their neck, resembled several Nrisimha, Lord of Prahladha on the battlefield, the whole atmosphere reverberated with the cries of “Seize him! Kill him! Cut him into pieces! Knockdown!”, added glories to Lord Sri Ramachandra who transforms the blade of grass into Asthra and vice versa.

Ravana witnessed the sharp decline of the army of demons, he mounted on the chariot in extreme rage and wielded bow on the pair of ten hands and instructed the demons on the battlefield to keep themselves away, his twenty eyes were reddened in fury, his chariot darted to the troop of Vanaras and bears. At that moment, the Vanaras hurled huge trees and rocks upon Ravana whose mighty stature stood firm on the chariot, the rocks hurled on him turned into pieces. He drove the chariot amidst the Vanaras and bears aimlessly, crushing them under the chariot, the Vanaras and bears shrieked for help “Oh! Angadha, Oh! Vayuputhra, help us, Oh! Lord of Raghu, Kosaladheesha, Oh! Raghuveera kindly protects us from the mouth of death.” Ravana saw the Vanaras and bears started to flee from the battlefield, immediately he fitted arrows on the ten bows.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – The description of the battle between Vanaras and demons

Chapter - 81– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – The description of the battle between Vanaras and demons

Rama spoke pleasantly “Oh! Dear friend, Vibheeshana, whoever possesses the chariot of vows, pieties, and austerities can conquer the mighty and invisible foe known as an attachment to worldly matters and bondage.” Vibheeshana clasped the feet of Raghunandhan in extreme joy “Oh! Prabho, you have utilized this opportunity to impart the highest of wisdom, Oh! Prabho, you are an embodiment of bliss and knowledge.” On the battlefield, Ravana shrieked at Vanaras to meet their fate in the hands of dreadful demons, while Angadha, Hanuman like mighty warriors were all prepared to battle against them, soon a fierce battle broke out between Vanaras and demons. The deities, Siddhas, Lord Bhrama, celestials arrived to witness the battle between Rama and Ravana. Lord Mahadeva spoke “Oh! Devi Uma, I was also among the deities to witness the glorious war between Rama and Ravana.” The deities eulogized the valor and virtues of Rama, both the demons and Vanaras were maddened with the passion to battle against each other, the Vanaras and bears led the war field with the grace of Lord Sri Ramachandra. They tore each other in vengeance, caught the enemies on leg and thrashed on the ground, showered rocks and trees on each other, they caught the enemies and ripped off their limbs, the bears and Vanaras killed several demons and buried under the sand. The Vanaras and bears resembled the death who desperately fought against the demons.

Chapter - 80– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – The conversation between Vibheeshana and Rama

The mighty Vanaras and bears in multitudes who resembled mountains without wings rushed to the demons, carrying huge trees and rocks on their hands, with the sharp nails and teeth as a weapon, fearless by nature cheered in excitement “Hail Rama! Hail Seethapathi Sri Ramachandra who resemble lion to the untamed elephant-like Ravana!” and they sang in praise of Lord Sri Ramachandra. The demons praising the might of the demon king Ravana, and the Vanaras and bears praising the glories of Sri Ramachandra, engaged in a fierce battle, the war field echoed the sounds of ‘Victory!  Victory!”. Vibheeshana who has grown too fond of Rama noticed his elder brother Ravan mounted on the magnificent chariot and Rama, the Lord of Raghu, without a chariot on the battlefield, it pushed him in utter dismay, he prostrated at the feet of Lord Rama, and spoke in tears “Oh! Prabho, you have no chariot or shield to protect your body, or you have no pair of feet cover, how could you fight against that mighty demon?” The merciful Lord Sri Ramachandra spoke “Oh! Vibheeshana, Oh! Dear Friend, listen to me carefully, I shall explain the real nature of a chariot, its four wheels represent valor and fortitude, the banner and standard of the chariot represent truthfulness and good conduct, the four horses of the chariot represent, strength, self-control, discretion, and benevolence, the reins on the horses represent forgiveness, compassion, and steadfastness. The faith and devotion are the charioteers, the dispassion is the shield, and the contentment is the sword, charity is the axe, the spear represents wisdom/supreme knowledge, the bow represents determination, the quiver represents pure and firm mind, and the Yama and Niyamas/austerities, penance, vows, are the powerful arrows. The selfless service to Bhramin and preceptors are the supreme Kavacha/shield, that brings fruitfulness to the task. Oh! Dear friend, whoever owns the chariot of piety, austerities, vows, shall have no enemies.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – The description of the army of Ravana

Chapter - 79– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – The description of the army of Ravana

Ravana and his army of demons witnessed various inauspicious omens, the weapons slipped out of his hands, the warriors were thrown out of the chariot, horses and elephants were produced loud cries and unwilling to move on the pathways, jackals, vultures, dogs, and donkeys gave out a shrill cry, the owls uttered alarming sounds like the messengers of death. The Jeeva who is sinful, soaked in impurities of Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, and completely drenched in illusion, physical and sensual pleasures, afar from the lotus feet of Lord Sri Ramachandra, could ever dream of happiness? The huge army of demons overlooked all the ill omens and sallied forth to the battlefield followed by Chathurangasena/chariot, elephants, horses, and men, mounted on various vehicles, decorated with the banners of different colors, dutifully marched to the battlefield. The disorderly elephants and horses marched to the battlefield were resembled the rainy clouds scattered by the heavy wind. The multitudes of demons attired in magnificent clothes, wielded in several vicious weapons, skilled in war tactics and illusionary powers moved to the battleground. The army of demons was beyond description, the elephants that were guarding the eight directions staggered, the earth quivered, the ocean became agitated, the mountains trembled, the dust-covered the atmosphere concealed the sunlight, and the air stood standstill. The sounds of kettledrums resembled the deafening noise of thunder at the time of deluge, the pipe instruments gladdened the heart of the warriors, the heroes roared like lions and revealed their might. Ravana cheered “Oh! Warriors, eliminate the mass of  Vanaras and bears from the battlefield, while I slay the two hermits.” He ordered his men to proceed to the battlefield, the Vanaras who perceived the mighty demons on the war field, rushed towards them in millions and millions contemplating upon the supreme Lord Rama.

Chapter - 78– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Ravana hurries to the battlefield followed by the large army of demons

Dhashanan pacified the women who were lamenting over the death of Indhrajeeth, “Always remember the truth that the Prakrithi/all the material matters are perishable.” He taught the people about the absolute truth, the destructible nature of material matters, although he was sinful, and engaged in immoral deeds. There are a few who follow what they preach, some take great pleasure in preaching wisdom and rarely make an effort to follow them. The next morning all the Vanaras and bears took their seats on the four gates of the palace, Dhashanan summoned his army chief and ordered “I have decided to teach my enemies with the might of my arms, hence if anyone scared to enter the battlefield can retire right now, I will take care of their lives, they have to face dire consequences of it.  I wholly depend on the might of my arms, I have brought hostility towards Rama, and I will give a befitting reply to the enemies who invaded us.” Ravana wielded in weapons, mounted on the grand chariot, and rushed to the battlefield. The war field echoed with the clattering sounds of weapons, there were several demons that accompanied by Ravana, they have experienced various bad omens on their way, Ravana rushed forth like a storm, did not pay attention to the visible signs of death, he was proud of the might of his arms.

King of birds Garuda hurried to the battlefield and ate up the serpents created by illusionary powers of Meghanatha, all the Vanaras and bears got rid of the Nagapasha and fear, rejoiced at heart, once again they have picked up huge rocks and trees on their hands and hurried to demons who were utterly confused taken a seat on the wall of the fortress. When Meganatha regained consciousness, saw him before his father Ravana, was completely ashamed of his fate. Meghanatha did not wait for long, hurried to the mountain cave to perform a sacrifice that could keep him invisible on the battlefield.  Vibheeshana came to know about the scheme of Indhrajeeth, hurried to Lord Rama, and expressed his concern “Oh! Prabho, you have incomparable and glories, the wicked Meghanatha who is the master of illusionary powers performing a fire sacrifice, if he has completed the sacrifice, it would be difficult to get him killed on the battlefield. Therefore, kindly do something to stop him from the performance of sacrifice.” Lord of Raghu expressed his gratitude to Vibheeshana and summoned Angadha and the mighty Vanaras, and spoke to Lakshman “Oh! Brother, you may proceed to the battlefield with the mighty Vanaras, Angadha, Sughrivah, and Vibheeshana, you should not allow Meghanatha to complete the fire sacrifice, Oh! Brother, it is your responsibility to kill Meghanatha on the battlefield. I can’t bear to watch the deities in distress any longer, Jambavan, Sugrivah and Vibheeshana will be following you with their army of Vanaras and bears.” Lakshman who is enthusiastic, staunch in battle, wielded on bow and arrow, contemplated the glories of Lord Sri Ramachandra, and spoke words that resembled the deafening thunder “Oh! Lord of Raghu, If I did not accomplish my task, kill Meghanatha on the battlefield, I will be no longer addressed as the servant of Lord Sri Ramachandra. I promise on Lord Sri Ramachandra, I will kill Meghanatha even if he was protected by hundreds of Lords Shambhu.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – Rama was tied up by the Nagapasha/snarl of the serpent by Indhrajeeth

Chapter - 74– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Rama was tied up by the Nagapasha/snarl of the serpent by Indhrajeeth

Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Bhavani, Oh! Girija, do you think the snarl of the serpent could tie up the supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra who is all-pervasive Bhramam, free from afflictions and bondage, whose very name is capable to cut off the snarl of worldly bondages of the Jeeva? Oh! Bhavani, the supreme Bhramam personified as the son of Kosala is beyond description or comparison, he is beyond mind and perceptions, whoever realizes the knowledge of Self/Jeevathma is Paramathma, grow dispassionate and worship Lord Sri Ramachandra, get relieved from all the misconceptions. Meghanatha with his illusionary powers hurled the host of Vanaras into utter confusion and began to pour abuses on the enemies. The elderly Jambavan spoke “Oh! Wicked, stop for a while.” Meghanatha was infuriated and shrieked at Jambavan “Oh! Fool, vile creature, I have spared you thinking of your age, yet you have the boldness to challenge me?” Meghanatha hurled his powerful trident on Jambavan who caught the trident in his hand and hurled it back on Meghanatha which hit his chest and fell down with a large thud. Jambavan seized Meghanatha on his leg and swirled around, and thrashed on the ground. Meghanatha who has achieved the boon from Lord Bhrama kept him alive, Jambavan caught on his leg and tossed him to the palace of Lanka. Maharishi Narada informed Garuda about the snarl of Nagapasha that tied Rama on the battlefield, immediately Garuda rushed to the battlefield and released Rama from the Nagapasha.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – The vicious battle between Lord Rama and Indhrajeeth

Chapter - 73– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – The vicious battle between Lord Rama and Indhrajeeth

Meghanatha mounted on a magnificent chariot, wielded in various weapons, arrived on the battlefield, gave out a loud roar and deafening laugh revealing his presence, which struck terror among the Vanaras and bears. Meghanatha hurled several vicious weapons which were difficult to name against the Vanaras and bears, and the entire battlefield crammed with the powerful arrows from his bow, resembled the heavy rain cloud in the month of Bhadrapada, the battlefield reverberated with the shrieks and cries of ‘seize him! Kill him!’, but no one knew what was happening amidst the darkness, the Vanaras hurled huge mountains and rocks on the battleground and flew on the air. In the meantime, Meghanatha used his illusionary powers and packed the valleys, mountains, and pathways crammed with the arrows. The Vanaras were confused without the knowledge of where to run, the multitudes of arrows on the pathways resembled a prison, the mighty Vanaras, Angadha, Hanuman, Nala, and Neela startled at the sight of the pathways. Indhrajeeth showered arrows on Lakshman, Sugrivah, and Vibheeshana that pierced their bodies, then he confronted Lord of Raghu, the arrows released by Indrajeeth were turned into serpents and attacked Rama. The Supreme Lord who is absolute Bhramam, omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient, free from impurities, impenetrable, unconquerable, was besieged with the Nagapasha. The Supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra performed a role of an ordinary human, in order to reveal the glory of Asthrashathra, the Lord allowed himself to be bound by the Nagapasha/snare of serpents, the deities were startled watching the Almighty Lord Sri Ramachandra’s amiability.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Lanka Kanda – Ravana lamenting over the death of Kumbhakarnna

Chapter - 72– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Ravana lamenting over the death of Kumbhakarnna

The Lord of Raghu, the King of Kosala who has matchless valor, shone brilliantly amidst the Vanars, bears, and demons on the battlefield, his beautiful face was covered in dust and perspiration, his lotus-like eyes reddened in anger, his body covered in the speck of blood, and the hands occupied on the powerful bow and arrows, the marvelous sight of the Lord Sri Ramachandra was beyond description even for the Lord Adhishesha who has thousands of tongues, then how can a Jeeva, Tulsidas could describe them?

Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Bhavani, the wicked demon Kumbhakarnna who is the mass of sins and impurities, achieved liberation at the hands of Lord Sri Ramachandra, Oh! Girija, how unfortunate are the Jeeva who are not engaged in the worship of Lord Rama?” Thus, a long day of a vicious battle between the two equally competent warriors of demons and Vanars ended at the hours of dusk, all those mighty warriors of demons were besieged with exhaustion and weariness. The Vanaras and bears achieved enthusiasm and great energy at the compassionate grace of Lord Sri Ramachandra resembled the hay added to the fire. The number of warriors of demons decreased day by day, like the pieties and noble deeds of a person get decreased by self-praising them. Dashanan grieved on the battlefield holding the bodiless head of Kumbhakarnna, the women bet their chest and wept bitterly, thus they have offered tribute to the mighty warrior of a demon who has achieved liberation in the hands of compassionate Lord. Meghanatha, the elder son of Ravana arrived on the spot and consoled his father in many ways, described various legends to uplift his spirits, and spoke “Oh! Dear father, you will see my valor on the battlefield tomorrow, I need not pretend to be unconquerable, I have never got an opportunity to exhibit my might, I shall prove my might and the chariot that I have achieved from my beloved deity.” Thus, Meghanatha continued to alleviate the grief of his father until daybreak, as soon as the sun dawned, the four gates of the Palace of Ravana were occupied by mighty Vanaras and bears in huge number. The Vanaras and bears resembled terrible as death, while the mighty demons stood exceedingly staunch on the battlefield. Sage Kakabhusundi speaks “Oh! Garuda, the battle between the army of Rama, and the Ravana was beyond description.”

Chapter - 71– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Rama’s battle against the demon Kumbhakarnna

Kumbhakarnna produced a boisterous yell withered in pain, rushed all over the battlefield with the mouth wide open.  The deities and Siddhas on the sky alarmed watching the vicious demon, the compassionate Lord saw the deities and Mahatmas are extremely frightful, he stretched his bow up to ears and shot several thousands of arrows on the wide-opened mouth of the demon, and completely shut the cave-like the mouth, still, did not stop chasing the Vanaras and bears on the battlefield Kumbhakarnna resembled death. Rama was infuriated shot a powerful arrow aiming at Kumbhakarnna’s head, that severed his head from the body and hurled in front of Dhashanan who could not control the grief watching the bodiless head of his brother, like the serpent lost its gem on the forehead. The bodiless head of Kumbhakarnna sprinted all over the battlefield, the Earth quivered beneath it, Lord Rama shot an arrow on the body and cut into two, that fell on the top of demons, the Vanaras and bears on the battlefield and crushed them on the ground as if the mountains dropped from the heaven.  The soul of Kumbhakarnna assumed a brilliant light and darted to the mouth of supreme Lord, while the deities and Siddhas witnessed the miraculous sight sung in praise of the Lord, flowers showered in amazement, the sounds of auspicious instruments reverberated on the sky, eventually all the deities and noble souls returned to their respective abodes. Devarishi Narada eulogized the valor of supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra and appealed to the Lord while the Lord of Raghu shone amidst the battleground “Oh! Prabho, the time has arrived to deliver Dhashanan to death”.

Kumbhakarnna produced a loud roar and started to seize the Vanaras on their leg and thrashed them on the ground, like an untamed elephant. Immediately flocks of Vanaras fled into different directions like the herd of sheep disappears at the sight of wolves. Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Bhavani, the Vanaras, and bears shrieked in terror, calling for help “Oh! Rama, Oh! Kharari, Oh! Pranatharththihari, Oh! Bhagavan, dispeller of grief, kindly protects us from the dreadful demons resemble famine that engulfs the kingdom, kindly protects us.” The moment Rama heard the pitiful cries of the Vanaras and bears, he rushed to the battleground wielded in bow and arrows, followed by several thousands of warriors. Rama showered multitudes of arrows aiming at the huge body of Kumbhakarnna were pierced his body and disappeared in the sky, he withered in pain and advanced in a great fury, the mountains and earth quivered while he was walking. Kumbhakarnna plucked a mountain and hurled against the Lord, but the arrows of Lord Raghu tore the mountain into pieces and cut off his both arms, resembled Mount Mandhara without wings, he cast a fierce look upon Lord Rama as if he was ready to devour the three spheres.

The Vanaras and bears brought huge rocks and trees and hurled upon Kumbhakarnna, cheered in great enthusiasm “Hail Raghuvamsamani Lord Sri Ramachandra! Hail Lord Seethapathi! Hail Lord Rama and Lakshman!” Kumbhakarnna maddened with fury, wandered all over the battlefield among the Vanaras and bears resembled death. Chapter - 66– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – Kumbhakarnna’s battle against Hanuman, Sugrivah, and Angadha

Kumbhakarnna fought against Hanuman, Angadha, Sugrivah, and several mighty Vanaras and bears, and caused them to fall unconscious on the battlefield, finally he squeezed the King of Vanara/Sugrivah on his armpit and went away. Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Devi Uma, the Lord of Raghu performed the part of an ordinary human, like the Garuda’s amusement with the cluster of snakes. He is supreme Bhrmam capable to perform the function of creation, preservation, and destruction of the Universe and its animate and inanimate things with the mere movements of his eyebrows, he devours the death, how could he leave his warriors in trouble? It was to reinstate the glories of the supreme Bhramam which would sanctify the Universe and purify the Jeeva from the Thapathraya/three types of grief whoever listen or sing in praise of him. Hanuman regained consciousness and searched for the King of Vanaras, in the meantime, Sugrivah regained consciousness and slipped out of the armpit of Kumbhakarnna, and bit his nose and ears. Kumbhakarnna shrieked out of pain, seized on the leg of Sugriva, and prepared to thrash him on the ground, was elevated to the sky miraculously and hit him heavily. Soon he rushed back to Lord Sri Ramachandra and spoke “Oh! Prabho, Hail Lord Sri Ramachandra! Hail Seethapathi! Hail Ram and Lakshman!’ Kumbhakarnna felt ashamed without nose and ears, in extreme fury returned to the monkey warriors who were terrified to witness a huge mountain-sized demon without nose and ears.

Brother, I have to leave now as I am under the clutches of death, cannot distinguish between foe and friend.” Vibheeshana after listening to his elder brother returned to Lord Sri Ramachandra who is the Lord of the Universe and spoke “Oh! Chapter - 64– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – The conversation between Kumbhakarna and Vibheeshana on the battlefield

Kumbhakarnna remembered the stunning form and virtues of Lord Sri Ramachandra and forgot himself for a moment, in the meantime, Ravana made arrangements to feed his brother with jars of wine, and vessels of meats, after having meals of huge quantities, Kumbhakarna roared like a flash of lightning, he was heavily drunk and passion for war forced him to drive to the battlefield without an army of demons. Vibheeshana saw his elder brother Kumbhakarnna on the battlefield, prostrated before him, remained in the embrace of each other for a while, and much appreciated him for his devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Ramachandra and Vibeeshana spoke “Oh! Brother, I was humiliated in the assembly of our elder brother Ravana, he has thrown me out of the palace for giving him appropriate advice, I was helpless, took shelter at the lotus feet of compassionate Lord Sri Ramachandra, and immediately got rid of my fear and anxiousness.” Kumbhakarnna spoke “Oh! Vibheeshana, Ravana is out of mind, he is under the clutches of death, cannot listen to the best advice at this moment. Oh! Brother, you are truly fortunate, you are an ornament to the demon race, you have brought glory to the demon clan by your pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Ramachandra who is supreme bliss personified.”

Chapter - 63– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Lanka Kanda – The conversation between Ravana and Kumbhakarnna

Kumbhakarnna felt very sorry for Ravana after listening to the destruction of armies of demons and great warriors on the battle against Rama, he shrieked at Ravana “Oh! Fool, are you out of mind? you have abducted the mother of the Universe, Jagathjannani, Paramba, Bhagavathi, Devi Sita while her husband was away, after all these do you expect anything good in your life? Oh! King of demons, you have not been fair to Lord Sri Ramchandra, then why did you come and wake me up? Leave your arrogance and pride and worship Lord Sri Ramachandra and thereby get rid of your troubles. Oh! Dhashanan, do you think Lord Rama, Lord of Raghu is mortal even after witnessing the might of his emissary Hanuman? Alas! Oh! Brother, you did not discuss it with me before committing a sin, you have invited hostility to that supreme Lord Sri Ramachandra whose favorites are Lord Virinchi and Lord Shambhu. I would have enlightened you with the knowledge of that Bhramam which I have attained from Maharishi Narada once, anyway you have crossed all the limits. Oh! Brother, come and give me a hug, I am leaving to witness that marvelous form of Lord Sri Ramachandra, who has dark cloud complexion, beautiful lotus-like eyes, capable to remove the Thapathraya/Adhidheivik, Adhibhauthik, and Adhyathmika of the devotees.”
