Chapter – 26– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– It is not good to keep enmity with the nine types of people 1) person who is skilled in the usage of armaments 2) person who knows your secret 3) a powerful Master 4) learned, 5) wealthy people 6) physician 7) poet 8) cook and 9) Panegyrist.

Mareecha spoke fervently “Oh! Dhashanan, do you think they are ordinary humans after killing the female Demon Thadaka and Subhahu, broken the powerful Shivadhanuss in the assembly of King Janaka, and killed Khara, Dhooshana, and Thrishirass? Do not keep enmity with these two brothers, return home to protect your clan from destruction.” Dhashanan could not control his anger after listening to the praise of Rama and Lakshman, he shrieks in anger “Oh! Fool, are you giving me lessons like my preceptor? Who possessed immense might like me in this world?” Mareecha thought “it is not good to keep enmity with the nine types of people 1) person who is skilled in the usage of armaments 2) person who knows your secret 3) a powerful Master 4) learned, 5) wealthy people 6) physician 7) poet 8) cook and 9) Panegyrist. In either way, my death is nearer, if I did not follow the orders of Ravana, he would kill me, If I follow his orders, I would get killed by Ramabana, hence I would prefer to die of Ramabana, not in the hands of wicked Ravana.” Finally, he made up his mind to get killed at the hands of the Lord of Raghu. Thus, Mareecha followed Ravana contemplating at the lotus feet of Rama, he was extremely delighted at the thought of witnessing his beloved Lord Rama before him, he did not reveal his joy to Ravana.

Chapter – 25– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Mareecha advises Dhashanan to leave enmity against Rama

Mareecha received Ravana with great respect, and enquired politely “Oh! Dear son, are you worried about something? was that the reason behind your visit to me?” The panic-stricken Ravana explained all the happenings with Shoorpanakha, Khara, and Dhooshana, and proudly spoke “Kindly assume the form of a golden deer, so that I can easily abduct the beautiful woman accompanied the princes of Ayodhya.” Mareecha spoke thoughtfully “Oh! Dhashanan, he is Lord Hari, Lord of animate and inanimate creatures in the Universe personified as the son of King Dasaratha. Oh! Son, do not quarrel with him, he is that Paramathma resides as a soul in us, he is the source of Prana, if he departs from us, we cannot survive in his absence. These two princes have protected the fire sacrifices of sage Vishwamithra, during that time, he shot an arrow against me, that hurled me some eight hundred miles away from him. It is not good to keep enmity with him, that incident reduced me to the size of an insect that stuck in the beehive, hence I adore those two brothers. Oh! Son, even if they are an ordinary human, they are the delight of noble souls and heroes of Raghu’s clan, keeping enmity with them will not bring any auspiciousness to you.”

Chapter – 24– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama instructs Devi Janaki take shelter in the fire until he eradicates the demons from the Earth

Lakshman went to the woods to collects fruits, and rooted vegetables, in the meantime Rama and Devi Janaki had a joyful conversation, Rama spoke in extreme delight “Oh! Devi, listen to me carefully, I have been carried out the part of my vows and truthfulness, I would love to play the role of an ordinary human too, kindly take shelter in the fire, till and completely eradicate the demons from the Earth.” As soon as she heard the instruction of her beloved Lord, Devi Janaki reverentially prostrated at the lotus feet of Rama and took shelter in the fire, leaving her mirror image with the Lord, which was exactly the same as Devi Janaki who is the epitome of beauty, and virtues. Lakshman who was returned from the woods after collecting the fruits and flowers could not recognize the fact and be never known the amusing sport played by Lord Rama. The ten-headed Ravana approached Mareecha with his evil intentions, the meekness of a selfish is capable to bring troubles, the sugar-coated words are alarming as Devi Bhavani/Rudrani who blossom on irregular seasons.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Ravana decides to fight against Rama and achieve liberation from the suffering of worldly existence

Chapter – 23– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Ravana decides to fight against Rama and achieve liberation from the suffering of worldly existence

In that huge assembly, Ravana pacified his sister Shoorpanakha in many ways and boasted his valor and fame. He returned to the palace full of anxiousness and that night he could not sleep at all. Ravana thought “None of Nagas, deities, humans, demons and living beings could withstand my servants or Khara and Dhooshana who have possessed immense might like me, if they were killed by a human, not a deity, then who is He? Is that supreme Lord who is the protector and sustainer of the Universe, reliever of the burden on the Earth has personified as Prince of Ayodhya? Then, I will go and fight with him to get rid of sufferings of the worldly existence, by facing his powerful arrows. The worship of Lord Hari is impossible in this birth with the body of a demon, which is drenched in impurities of Kama, Krodha, Madha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, and ignorance, therefore I have decided to fight against that Prince, if he is Lord Hari personified as the son of Dasaratha, I may achieve liberation from the worldly existence, otherwise, I would kill both the princes and abduct the beautiful princes with them.” Ravana made up his mind and mounted on the magnificent chariot to meet the demon Mareecha who is settled on the seashore. Lord Mahadeva explains the mysterious conversation that took place between the divine couple Lord Rama and Devi Sita to Devi Parvathi.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – An enemy, a childless woman, fire, sin, a master, and a serpent should not be overlooked, they can cause great damage at any moment

Chapter – 22– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– An enemy, a childless woman, fire, sin, a master and a serpent should not be overlooked, they can cause great damage at any moment

Shoorpanakha wept bitterly and spoke “Oh! Brother, an enemy, a childless woman, fire, sin, a master, and a serpent should not be overlooked, they can cause great damage at any moment.” In deep distress she fallen before the assembly, lamenting over the damage caused to her, and shrieked in agony “Oh! Dhashanan/my ten-headed brother, I have disfigured by the youths in the wood while you are alive.” Dhashanan rose from the throne abruptly, approached Shoorpanakha and gave a hand to her, and spoke “Oh! Dear sister, who disfigured you? Who has the courage to cut your nose and ears? What happened in the woods?” Shoorpanakha began to speak in tears “Oh! Brother, there are two charming youths, the sons of King Dhasharatha, King of Ayodhya, who arrived in the woods for the expedition. They resemble lions among men, they are extremely valorous and courageous capable to obliterate the entire demon clan from the Earth. Oh! Ten-headed Ravan, you know the Sages, Rishis, and inhabitants in the woods are free from fear, they are happily moving all over the woods. The two youths are charming, skilled archers, and they have possessed immense might, resemble death to me. These two brothers are terrible as death, possessed immense might and glory, they have taken a vow to destroy the wicked and deceitful on the Earth, they are determined and they are benevolent to deities and Sages. The elder one is Rama who is the epitome of beauty, he has a beautiful woman by his side, the creator has invested all his skills to create this woman who is the embodiment of virtue and beauty, excels the beauty of crores of Devi Rathi. It was Lakshman, the younger brother of Rama chopped off my ears and nose, after knowing me as your sister. Khara and Dhooshana accompanied by fourteen thousand demons to fight against Rama were killed mercilessly.” Ravana could not control his rage after listening to the death of Khara, Dhooshana, and Thrishiras.

Chapter – 21– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– An ascetic gets spoiled in the association of people drenched in the worldly matters and material interests, likewise a King meets his destruction by an evil-minded minister, wisdom get lost by deceitfulness, modesty vanishes by the consumption of spirituous substances, companionship destroys with the want of love, and the merit of noble deeds disappear with the pride and haughtiness.

The demons who were killed on the battlefield were left their mortal coil calling ‘Rama Rama’ thereby they have attained liberation from the worldly existence, thus the ocean of Mercy Lord Rama provided Moksha to all those dreadful demons from the grief of worldly existence, the deities showered flowers on the Lord and the sounds of the divine kettle-drum reverberated in the sky. The deities eulogized the splendor of Rama and returned to their respective abodes in their magnificent celestial vehicles. Thus, the entire Dhandakavana and Panchavati got rid of fear and threat of the demons, soon the deities, inhabitants, Rishis, and Sages were extremely happy. At that moment, Lakshman appeared before the Lord followed by Devi Sita, he fell at the feet of Lord Raghu and embraced him.  Devi Sita fixed her gaze at the marvelous dark cloud appearance of Rama like the Chakora yearningly look at the autumn moon. In this way, Rama performed various amusements while living in the Panchavati, and provided delight to the deities, Sages, and humans as well. Shoorpanakha came to know the death of Khara and Dhooshana, vehemently approached her elder brother Ravana, and shrieked at him “Oh! Brother, you are irresponsible, you have no interest in ruling the Kingdom or its people, all you do is drinking and eating all day. You have no knowledge about your enemies who is at your doorstep. The leadership of a Kingdom without the knowledge of political science, wealth without virtues, righteous deeds performed without the devotion to Lord Hari, knowledge in different fields without common sense are fruitless labor. Oh! Brother, I have heard that an ascetic gets spoiled in the association of people drenched in the worldly matters and material interests, likewise, a King meets his destruction by an evil-minded minister, wisdom gets lost by deceitfulness, modesty vanishes by the consumption of spirituous substances, companionship destroys with the want of love, and the merit of noble deeds disappear with the pride and haughtiness.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Khara, Dhooshana, Thrishirass, and the multitudes of the army of demons got killed in the battle with Rama

Chapter – 20– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Khara, Dhooshana, Thrishirass, and the multitudes of the army of demons got killed in the battle with Rama

The jackals and vultures sprang all around the battlefield, the spirits, Boothagans, Yogini danced in merriment taking pleasure in the blood seeping through the bodies and heads, Ramabana tore the bodies of enemies into pieces, the warrior gathered courage again and again cried to seize Rama, and fought against Rama in vain. The vultures flew away with their piece of meat all over the field, the lifeless bodies spread all over the battlefield. Thus, most of the army of demons of Khara, Dhooshana, and Thrishiras were killed on the battlefield, finding the army in distress, the leaders rushed to fight against Rama. The demons hurled various weapons like spears, daggers, swords, arrows, clubs on Rama were destroyed in the blink of eyes, and in return showered arrows upon the enemies that ripped off their chest, they fell on the ground with a large thud and again rose on their feet, in this way, the demons played several illusionary tricks on Rama. The deities were alarmed to watch the fierce battle that took place with the Lord of Raghu, Rama alone fought against the fourteen thousand demons. The compassionate Lord of Maya, Mayapathi found the deities and Sages are frightened, soon he performed a miracle, the demons perceived each other as Rama, and fought between themselves fiercely and killed, thus the entire army of demons was destroyed.

Chapter – 19– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– The description of the battle between Rama and the multitudes of demons

Khara and Dhooshana could not control their rage, ordered their men to capture Rama. Soon all those dreadful demons rushed to Rama with their spears, dagger, sword, club, spears, bow and arrows, etc. The boisterous sound of the vibration of Rama’s bow kindled terror among the warriors of Khara and Dhooshana, left them perplexed. They have understood that they are confronting a powerful human on the Earth, they have become more cautious, and started hurling weapons of various kinds on Rama. The Lord of Raghu tore those weapons into pieces and stretched his powerful bow aiming at the enemies, thus showered countless arrows on them, those were darted towards the enemies with the hissing sound of the serpent. Rama got infuriated in the battle, showered powerful arrows on the demons which made them flee from the battlefield. The three brothers Khara, Dhooshana, and Thrishiras in a rage announced: “Whoever flees for life from the battlefield would face the death punishment.” At that moment, the warriors understood their foolishness to run for life from Rama, hence they came forefront with a decision to die in the hands of Rama.  Thus several got killed on the battlefield, Rama aimed Narachapa that made the battlefield crammed with several headless bodies, limbs, and body parts, the lifeless bodies were scattered all over the ground, some of the bodies stood up again even after being badly wounded, soon several jackals, and eagles appeared were fought against each other for their own share of meat.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Khara and Dhooshana gets annoyed listening to the daring message of Rama

Chapter – 18– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Khara and Dhooshana gets annoyed listening to the daring message of Rama

Rama coiled his matted hair locks on the pinnacle of the head after wielding the formidable bow, the array of demons seemed like the collection of snakes in the mountain of emerald challenging against the streaks of lightning, Rama tied the quiver on his waist, holding bow and arrow in his powerful arms aiming at the enemies, he stared at the enemies like the lion prepared to pounce upon the herd of elephants. The haughty demons approached Rama cheering “capture him! Capture him!” as if nearing the blazing sun. The demons who appeared with vicious weapons could not release their weapons against Rama, they became powerless before the Lord. Khara and Dhooshana ordered his men “The two princes are the ornament of the human race, don’t leave them. We have seen Naga, deities, humans, Rishis, and Sages in this part of Panchavati, and we have eradicated many lives, honestly, we have not seen such a charming prince in our lives, even though he disfigured our sister, he does not deserve death punishment, he is an extraordinary human being.” Khara and Dhushana instructed his men to deliver a message to Rama “Surrender to us at once, or leave the forest with your wife and brother.” Rama replied to the messengers smilingly “Oh! Fools, we are Kshatriyas, born to fight against enemies. We conduct expeditions to the woods hunting for animals, and we are well prepared to hunt down the demons like you too. We don’t get intimidated by the tactics of our enemies or do not flee back at the strength of our enemies, we would face the enemies with courage and meet death on the battlefield. Though we are humans, we have been born to eradicate the haughty demons on Earth. You all look youthful, but no power is vested in you, so go back to your homes and save your lives. I don’t kill enemies who flee from the battleground, any way you have brought this fight with me, hence I do not leave my enemies without showing my compassion to them.” The messengers returned with the message of Rama, that was infuriated Khara and Dhushana.

Chapter – 17– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– The demons Khara and Dhooshana arrives with multitudes of the army of demons to fight against Rama

Lakshman immediately after receiving the orders from Rama, cut off the nose and ears of Shoorpanakha effortlessly, in this way he has invited enmity of the mighty demon King Ravana that was predestined by Lord Sri Hari. Shoorpanakha was bleeding without nose and ears, resembled a huge mountain of red-colored water streaming down, she went sobbing to Khara and Dhooshana “Oh! Brothers, shame to your manhood and valor.” Khara and Dhooshana worriedly enquired about her pitiable state were described the whole incident that happened in the Panchavati. Soon Khara and Dhooshana gathered multitudes of the army of demons of dreadful appearance of mountain-sized, holding several vicious weapons, mounted on various vehicles procced to the Panchavati, on their way they found several inauspicious omens but did not get discouraged as if they were rushing to the mouth of death. The multitude of the army of demons was in extreme joy, rushed to the site cheering “Let us capture the two brothers, and kill them”, the sky was covered in the dust raised from their vehicles. Rama advised Lakshman to take Devi Janaki to the mountain cave, “Oh! Thatha, keep yourself and Devi Janaki safe, there are multitudes of the army of demons are approaching us.” Lakshman wielded in bow and arrow moved to the mountain cave with Devi Sita, when Rama saw the multitudes of demons approaching, he stretched the powerful bow aiming at them.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Shoorpanakha meets Rama and Lakshman in the Panchavati

Chapter – 16– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Shoorpanakha meets Rama and Lakshman in the Panchavati

Rama speaks “Oh! Lakshman, whoever worships me with word, mind, and deed, and completely surrendered to me, I will stay in their lotus-like hearts.” Lakshman was highly delighted to listen to the significance of Bhakti/devotion, reverentially prostrated at the lotus feet of Rama. In this way, days were passed engaged in lectures on spiritual wisdom, Bhakti, Vairagya, virtues, and morality, etc. The notorious King of Lanka, Ravana had a wicked sister Shoorpanakha, as the name indicates she had overly grown big ugly nails capable of winnowing like the fan, and she is cruel as a venomous serpent. Once, she arrived in Panchavati and met the two charming brothers, immediately she had fallen in love with them. Sage Kakabhusundi speaks “Oh! Garuda, women get easily passionate about things and people, cannot restrain their fiery passion, even if it is her father, son, brother, or stranger. The wicked female demon Shoorpanakha assumed the form of a beautiful woman and approached the two brothers with a sweet coated word “Oh! Dear charming fellows, there is no one handsome as you and there is no woman beautiful as me in these three worlds, the creator has done a painstaking job by creating us, I have searched for a charming pair for me in all three worlds, alas! I did not find a single one appropriate for me, hence I have remained a spinster all my life, Oh! Charming ones, my eyes set on you after seeing your attractiveness.” Rama looked at Devi Sita and spoke meekly “My younger brother is unmarried; you can approach him.” Shoorpanakha went closer to Lakshman who was well aware of the wickedness of Shoorpanakha as the sister of their enemy, he looked at Lord Rama and spoke softly “Oh! Beautiful lady, I am a humble servant of my master, I am not independent to act or think, if you have chosen me, I assure you will have no comforts in life. My master is the illustrious King of Kosalapura, whatever he does worthy of him. A servant like me can’t aspire for richness, honor, or fame, only the crooked ones achieve all these by milking their Master.” Again, Shoorpanakha returned to Rama in desperation, eventually, she was sent back to Lakshman was advised “Oh! Devi, Rama alone can do something, rest are incapable”. In this way, Shoorpanakha was sent back and forth for quite some time, she got really annoyed, revealed her dreadful appearance before Rama and Devi Sita. The merciful Lord noticed Devi Sita was terrified at the sight of Shoorpanakha, hence Lord of Raghu instructed Lakshman with his usual gestures.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Rama describes the splendor of Bhakti/devotion

Chapter – 15– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama describes the splendor of Bhakti/devotion

Rama spoke “Oh! Lakshman, ultimately the powerful Maya causes Bandha/bondage and the knowledge of Parmarththa provides Moksha/liberation from the grief of worldly existence.  The destruction of impurities of mind such as Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara,  is achieved through the various austerities and vows, Shama, Dhama, Dhanam, Dhaya, Ahimsa, Astheyam, Arjjavam, Thithiksha, Bhramacharya, Bhramavichara, being in the association of learned, noble souls, Santh, Mahathma, growing dispassionate to material matters, of wealth, richness, fame, money, children, wife, companion and relatives, etc.. are the source of Bhakti/devotion, Gnana/wisdom, and Vairagya. Veda emphasizes that the dispassion/Vairgaya brings virtues, the spiritual wisdom comes from Shamadhamadhi, austerities, meditation, results in liberation from the grief of worldly existence. Oh! Dear brother, the Bhakti/ devotion is the one that highly pleases me, it is superior to the practice of Gnana/Paramarththa Thaththva and Vijjana. Bhakti is beyond comparison, it is the source of bliss that can be achieved only with the association of preceptor, noble souls, Santh, Mahathma, hence Bhakti is the easiest way to attain the all-pervasive Bhramam. Whoever sincerely follow the spiritual and religious rites prescribed in the Veda, according to their own Varnna, and whoever honors the Bhramins well-versed in Veda and spiritual rites, grow dispassionate/Vairagya, abandon the interest in worldly matters and pleasures, would achieve Bhakti/devotion which is the easiest way to attain my grace. Oh! Thatha, there are nine kinds of Bhakti/Navadhabhakthi, such as 1)Shravanam/listening to the glorious myths of supreme Lord, 2) Keerthanam/singing in praise of the glories of Lord 3) Smaranam/meditation 4)Padhasevanam/worship of lotus feet 5) Archanam/worship of idol 6)Vandhanam/prostration before the deity 7)Dhasyam/worship of Lord with the feeling of a servant, 8) Sakhyam/worship of Lord with the feeling of companion and finally 9) Athmanivedhanam/complete surrender at the lotus feet of Lord. Oh! Lakshman, mere listening to my glorious myths would cultivate Bhakti in the mind of Jeeva, the selfless service to noble souls, preceptors, Santh, and Mahathma, with body, mind, and deed removes the impurities of the mind. Oh! Thatha, I get highly pleased with my ardent devotees, who envisage me in all the animate and inanimate things, and render selfless service to the preceptor, king, parents, noble souls, Bhramins and deities, finally, whoever remembers me with tears on their eyes, voice choked on the throat, with the rush of thrill through their limbs, would achieve my eternal presence.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Rama shed light on Paramarththa Thaththva – Jeevathma and Paramathma – Indestructible Purusha/Paramathma and destructible Prakrithi/material matters

Chapter – 14– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama shed light on Paramarththa Thaththva – Jeevathma and Paramathma – Indestructible Purusha/Paramathma and destructible Prakrithi/material matters

Lakshman spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, kindly describe Paramathma/supreme soul and Jeevathma/individual soul, so that I may achieve Bhakti/devotion at your lotus feet, and thereby get rid of ignorance, grief, and sufferings of worldly existence.” Rama spoke compassionately “Oh! Dear brother, Lakshman, I shall explain them briefly, listen to them carefully, Oh! Thatha, the feeling of ‘I’ ‘You’ ‘Me’ ‘Mine’, are the concepts of illusion/Maya, which is influenced by all the living beings in this Universe, none is free from my powerful Maya. Whatever is perceived by the mind, and witnessed are persuaded by Maya/illusion. Oh! Thatha, ignorance is grief, lack of spiritual wisdom, knowledge of ‘self’/self-realization/Athmavichara and God-realization/Paramarththa Thaththva, the absence of knowledge of Jeevathma is the inseparable part of that all-pervasive Bhramam/Paramathma, heaves the Jeeva into repeated cycles of births and compel to undergo sufferings and grief of worldly existence. The knowledge of self, and the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, the three attributes known as Rajasik, Thamasik, and Sathvik controlled by the Supreme Lord, the supreme wisdom known as Paramarththa Thaththva, the knowledge of all-pervasive Bhramam/Oneness-in-all, removes the impurities of Kama/lust, Krodha/anger, Lobha/greed, Moha/desire, Madha/pride Mathshcharya/jealousy, Ahamkara/ego, Mamakara /arrogance in the Jeeva. Oh! Lakshman, whoever attained that supreme wisdom, Oneness-in-all, and the knowledge of destructible Prakrithi/material matters, money, richness, wealth, fame, etc. and the indestructible Purusha/Paramathma/supreme soul would achieve dispassion, outshines the three attributes, abandon the interest in worldly matters and attachment to material matters like a grass.”

Chapter – 13– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Lakshman appeals to Rama to describe Bhakti, Gnana, and Vairagya

Rama along with Devi Sita and Lakshman arrived on the riverbank of Godavari, Lakshman constructed a beautiful hermitage for Lord. Rama met Jatayu, the King of birds and Rama have developed a close bond in a short period of time. Soon after the arrival of Rama in the Panchavati, the Sages and Rishis lived in the forest became happy, started moving freely, and performing austerities and Tapasya without the fear of demons. The entire forest flourished with an abundance of green, the trees and plants loaded with flowers and fruits, nestled by different species of birds and packed with the buzzing of honey bees, the streams, rivers, ponds were brimming with crystal clear water invited various species of animals to settle near the riverbank. The richness and beauty of the Panchavati grown beyond description in the presence of Rama, even thousand tongued Adhishesha would find it difficult to describe them. Once, Lord Rama was sitting at ease, Lakshman approached the Lord with innocent words “Oh! Prabho, you are the Lord of Lords, you are the Lord of animate and inanimate things, you are the Lord of creator and protector as well, Oh! Prabho, kindly teach me how can I practice worship at your lotus feet? Kindly describe the spiritual wisdom/Bhramavichara, dispassion/Vairagya, and Maya/illusion, and most importantly the practice of devotion/Bhakti, to achieve your eternal grace.”

Chapter – 12– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Sage Agasthya instructs Rama to live in Panchavati situated in the Dhandaka forest

Rama took a seat in the middle of the assembly of Sages, all the Sages fixed their gaze on the marvelous appearance of Rama, like the Chakora birds yearningly look at the autumn moon. The Lord of Raghu began to speak amiably “Oh! Mahathma, Oh! Prabho, I have nothing to hide from you, and you all know the purpose of my visit to the glorious Dhandakavana, Oh! Prabho, kindly advise me how can I eradicate the enemies of the hermits in the forest.” Sage Agasthya smiled at Rama and began to speak “Oh! Rama, you are the destroyer of evils, you have sought after my advice due to your virtues and amiability, Oh! Prabho, your glories are endless, I know very little of them. You are Mayapathi, your Maya resembles the huge Audhumbara tree, and the multitudes of Universes are the fruit of that tree, the animate and inanimate things in the Universe are the insects’ dwells inside those succulent fruits like Universe, hence they have limited knowledge of you. Oh! Prabho, the ‘Time’/Kalachakra, devours the insects like animate and inanimate things dwell inside the succulent fruits, yet that ‘Time’ is under your control. Oh! Prabho, you are the Lord of ten directions, yet you are seeking my opinion as an ordinary human being. Oh! Prabho, you are an ocean of mercy, kindly provide us the boon of intense devotion at your lotus feet, dispassion and close association with the Santh, Mahathma, and noble souls, and your eternal presence with Goddess Sita, and Lakshman in our hearts. Oh! Prabho, you are that supreme Bhramam perceived by the Santh Mahathma and noble souls undertaking austerities, Tapasya, vows, celibacy, Shamadhamadhi, etc, Oh! Prabho, you have a marvelous appearance that entices the whole Universe, you have been too kind and compassionate to your devotees always, hence you have decided to seek my advice. Oh! Lord of Raghu, this is one of the marvelous forests called Panchavati, situated in the Dhandaka forest, you have sanctified this forest with your footprints, and removed this beautiful land from the curse of Shukracharya. Oh! Prabho, kindly reside in Panchavati, and consider it as your abode to undertake austerities and penances, and thereby shower your auspicious grace on all these Sages residing in the Panchavati.” Rama after receiving permission from Sage Agasthya proceeded to Panchavati.

Chapter – 11– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama arrives in the hermitage of Sage Agasthya

Sage Sutheekshana spoke fervently “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Rama, kindly reside in my heart with Goddess Janaki, and Lakshman, wielded in bow and arrow, followed by your young brother Lakshman and Devi Sita, like a moon in my heart free from passion.” Lord Rama replied courteously “So be it !/Yevamasthu!” further they have conducted a visit to the hermitage of Sage Kumbhaja/Agasthya, Sage Sutheekshna spoke “Oh! Prabho, it has been so long that I did not make a visit to my preceptor Sage Agasthya, Oh! Prabho, if you do not mind, I would like to accompany you to the hermitage of Sage Agasthya.” The Supreme Lord who is the ocean of mercy understood the yearning of the Sage to be with him, he looked at Lakshman and smiled at each other thinking of the cleverness of the Sage, finally, Sage Sutheekshna delightfully followed them to the hermitage of Sage Agasthya. Thus, they have arrived in the hermitage of Sage Agasthya, immediately after seeing his preceptor Sage Sutheekshna prostrated before him and spoke with folded hands “Oh! Prabho, the two sons of Kosaladheesha King Dhasharatha, the sustainer of the Universe has come to visit you, Oh! Prabho, Lord Sri Ramachandra, accompanied by his younger brother Lakshman and Devi Vaidhehi whose names you pronounce day and night has arrived in your hermitage.” As soon as the Sage heard the name of Rama, he abruptly rose from the seat and rushed to meet them, Sage’s eyes welled up in tears at the very sight of Lord Hari. The two brothers reverentially prostrated at the lotus feet of Sage Agasthya was raised from the ground and embraced in utmost affection. Sage Agasthya enquired their welfare, and led them inside the hermitage, offered a seat and worshiped them in many ways, and began to speak “There is no one in the Universe fortunate than me.” The Sages assembled gazed at the loveliness and modesty of Rama who is the ocean of mercy.

Chapter – 10– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Sage Sutheekshna eulogizes the splendor of Lord Rama

Sage Sutheekshna repeatedly prostrated at the lotus feet of Lord Rama, and took Rama to his hermitage, received him with great honor. Sage Sutheekshna spoke “Oh! Prabho, how can I eulogize your glories? You are beyond description, if I make an attempt to describe your splendor that would be my foolishness, like the firefly competing with the brightness of the sun. Oh! Prabho, I shall meditate upon the Supreme Lord Rama, Lord of Raghu's, who has attractive blue limbs resemble freshly formed dark clouds, attired in a saffron robe, adorned in matted hair locks, wielded in bow and arrow on one hand, and the quiver tied on the waist. He is supreme Bhramam resemble the woodfire that burns the forest like delusion in the Jeeva, you are the sun that causes to blossom the lotus-like hearts of the Sages and Rishis, you resemble the lion that kills the heard of elephants like demons, you resemble the king of birds chase its prey, may that supreme Lord protect us always! I shall meditate upon Lord Rama who has beautiful eyes that resemble red lotus flower petals, he is attired in magnificent clothes, resembles the full moon to the Chakora like eyes of Devi Sita, he resembles swan that takes pleasure in Manasarovar like the heart of Lord Shiva. He has a wide chest, long arms, and strong shoulder, he resembles the King of birds that devour the serpent-like misconception of the Jeeva, he removes conflicts and despair, he liberates the Jeeva from the repeated cycles of rebirths, he is the delight of deities and Raghu’s clan, he is an embodiment of kindness and compassion, may that supreme Lord protect us always! I shall sing in praise of Lord Sri Ramachandra who reduces the burden of Earth, he has Saguna and Nirgunaswaroopa as well, he is all-pervasive supreme Bhramam which is the source of functioning of the mind, intellect, Chitta, Ahamkara, Karma and Gnanendhriya, and Prana. He is pure and unblemished, free from afflictions, changeless, has neither birth nor death. He resembles wish-fulfilling Kalpathru to his ardent devotees, he removes the impurities of Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara of the Jeeva, he is the safest bridge to cross the ocean of worldly existence, may that delight of solar race protects us always! I shall meditate upon the Supreme Lord Rama who has powerful arms, immense valor, he is the essence of righteousness, virtues, whose very name remove the evil effects of Kali era may propitious to us always! I shall pray to that supreme Lord Rama who is the slayer of Khara and Dhooshana, he is all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, pure, unblemished, dispassionate, changeless, reside as a soul in the Jeeva, gracefully moving all over the woods with Devi Sita and young brother Lakshman may reside in my heart always! I shall meditate upon the Supreme Lord Rama who is Saguna and Nirgunaswaroopa, reside as a soul in the Jeeva, and the knower of all hearts, that lotus-eyed Lord of Kosala may take up his abode in my heart as well! I shall earnestly pray for the perpetual devotion at the lotus feet of Rama which remind me always that I am the servant of my Master Lord Raghu, even in the hours of bad luck.” Lord Rama was highly pleased with the devotion of Sage Sutheekshna, he embraced the Sage again and again and spoke “Oh! Mahatma, I am highly pleased with your devotion, you may kindly ask for a boon.” Sage replied fervently “Oh! Prabho, I have never desired for a boon, you are the delighter of your devotees, Oh! Lord of Raghu, kindly provide me a boon which pleases you.” Lord Raghu spoke “Oh! Mahathma, may you become the repository of virtues, wisdom, intense devotion, and dispassion!” Sage Sutheekshna overwhelmed with various emotions, and spoke in tears “Oh! Prabho, you have provided the boon which I have been yearning all long in my heart.”

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – The legend of Sage Sutheekshna, a learned disciple of Sage Agasthya

Chapter – 9– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– The legend of Sage Sutheekshna, a learned disciple of Sage Agasthya

Rama promised the Rishis and Sages assembled that he will make sure the forest is free from the haughty demons, which would make the life of the Sages and Rishis peaceful to conduct austerities and Tapasya. He took a visit of the hermitage of the Sages who lived in the forest and it was extremely pleased the hermits. Sage Agasthya had a learned disciple Sutheekshna who is an ardent devotee of Rama by word, mind, and deed, came to know the visit of Rama immersed in various thoughts “Will Lord of Raghu who is the companion of the distressed souls approve me as his devotee and shower his grace? Will Rama and Lakshman approve wretched persons like me as their servants? I have no knowledge or wisdom, I have not practiced austerities or Tapasya, or dispassion/Vairagya, or Japa or Yoga, I haven’t been in the association of ascetics and sages, I have no firm devotion at the lotus feet of the Lord, all I have learned that the supreme Lord Ramachandra is merciful, whoever devoted to him would get rid of grief and sufferings of worldly existence. The mere thought of that benevolent Lord makes me feel that my eyes would receive the fortune to witness the lotus-like lovely face of that Lord, that is capable to provide liberation from worldly existence.” Lord Mahadeva spoke “Oh! Parvathi, Sage Sutheekshna drenched in extreme love and devotion for Rama, was beyond the description of words. He was not aware of the direction or did not make an effort to locate the route, he moved forward and backward aimlessly, immersed in the thought of Lord Sri Ramachandra, sing in praise of the Lord, and dancing all the way was watching the Lord hiding behind a tree. The compassionate Lord realized the state of extreme devotion of the Sage, soon dispelled the fear of transmigration of the Sage, revealed his form in the heart of the sage. The Sage sat down in the middle of the path entered into a trance, Lord Rama approached Sage Suteekshana and was delighted to see the devotion of the sage, Rama tried many ways to wake the Sage from the trance but the Sage could not wake out of the bliss. Soon, Rama appeared as Lord Vishnu with four arms in the heart of the Sage and disappeared, soon the Sage got out of the deep meditation in extreme agony, like the serpent lost its gem, witnessed Lord Rama along with Devi Sita and Lakshman before him. Sage Sutheekshna could not control his tears of love, overwhelmed with various emotions, fallen like a log at the lotus feet of the Lord. Rama raised the Sage from the ground and embraced him affectionately, which resembled the Thamala Vruksha in the embrace of the golden tree. Sage Sutheekshna gazed at the lovely face of Rama without blinking eyes and stood like a portrait.

Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Sri Tulsidas Maharaj – Aranya Kanda – Rama witnesses the heap of skeletons in the dense wood

Chapter – 8– Sri Ramacharitha Manas – Aranya Kanda– Rama witnesses the heap of skeletons in the dense wood
