Chapter – 9 – Lanka Kandam

The huge army of Vanaras and bears attack the city of Lanka

Rama called for the ministers, after receiving the details of the fortress of Ravana. He informed the ministers about the structure of the palace of Ravana and instructed them to draw a detailed plan to attack the city of Lanka. Vanararaja Sugriva, Jambavan and Vibheeshna conducted a plan, after meditation upon the Supreme Lord and duly informed their plans to Suryavamshabhooshana. The army of Vanaras and bears divided into four groups led by highly intelligent warriors who have received a clear-cut plan of action. The Vanaras enthusiastically prostrated before Rama and moved forward producing boisterous voices. They uprooted huge trees and mountains on their way and cheered “Hail Kosaladheesha! Victory to Raghunatha” and they darted into different directions, they were thoroughly understood that the entry to the city of Lanka is extremely difficult; they contemplated Ramachandra and moved forward. They have circled the huge fortress of Ravana from four directions, producing deafening noises, like the sky covered in dark rain clouds. The Vanaras and bears have the immense prowess, resembled lions, cheering “ Hail Rama, Hail Lakshman, and Hail Sugriva”. The arrival of Vanaras and bears in the city of Lanka created huge chaos, people of Lanka shrieked out of terror and ran all over the city, the haughty Ravana smiled and ordered “These Vanaras are unruly, all my people are hungry will have a sumptuous feast today, it is great that my people have their meal in front of their houses. Oh! Warriors, chase the Vanaras and bears from the four sides of the fortress, and attack them, eat all those Vanaras and bears at your heart’s content.”

 

Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Uma, the warriors of Ravana rushed to four directions of the fortress, holding fierce weapons, the dull-minded demons ferociously approached the Vanaras and bears, like the pelicans, rush to the heap of diamonds, thinking as colorful meat to take pleasure in it, and badly get hurt. Thus a huge army of warriors with spear, bow, and arrows entered the highly confidential route to the fortress. The sounds of divine musical instruments pierced the heart of the enemies, the Vanaras and bears who have huge size moved through the difficult pathways, uprooting trees, and pillars on their way. They were biting teeth, smashing fist, crores of  warriors cheered “Jai Sri Ram’, and the army of Ravana cheered “Jai Ravan” in this way, the two sides of the armies engaged in a fierce battle. The army of demons pulled the mountains and heaved to the army of Vanaras, who caught it effortlessly and tossed it back. These furious Vanaras and bears plucked the huge mountains and tossed it on the fortress, they brutally attacked the demons and thrashed them on the floor. The demons ran out of the battle, were called for dual fights. All those Vanaras entered in the huge fortresses of Ravana and sung in praise of Raghuram. The Vanaras crushed the demons under the weight of their bodies. The army of Vanara and bears with the grace of Srirama took good control over the demons. They stood on the roof of the fortress and cheered “Hail Raghurama” “Hail Raghukula Thilaka”, eventually the army of demons disappeared from there like scattered clouds on the sky. The entire city echoed in the cries of demons and cheers of Vanara. The cries of children, elderly people, and women reverberated in the city; they cursed Ravana invited trouble to the Kingdom. Ravana came to know that the demons started to flee from the city; he ordered “If anyone flees from the battlefield I will sieve off their heads, you have enjoyed all the stately pleasures during good times and now you are running away from the war zone.” The warriors felt ashamed, they have decided to fight against Rama and get killed in his hands, they have already abandoned the love for life, they ferociously fought against the army of Rama was brutally attacked by the Vanaras and bears who were holding vicious weapons eventually got killed on the battlefield.

 

Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Uma, the army of Vanaras exhausted and withdraw, calling out for Angadha, Hanuman, Nala, Neela, and Dhvidha. Soon Hanuman understood that the Vanaras are under troubles, he rushed to the north gate of the palace, where Indhrajith stood with his huge army of demons, the huge doors of the palace was difficult to open, Vayuputhra produced a boisterous voice and leaped over the walls of the palace, he took a huge rock and rushed towards Meghanatha, he destroyed his chariot, the charioteer lost his balance, Indrajith fell on the ground, Hanuman stamped on the chest of Indhrajith, soon another charioteer approached Indhrijith and took him in his chariot and flew from the war zone. Angadha understood that Vayuputhra all alone inside the fortress, he took a giant leap and entered inside the fortress. These two Vanaras shoot all their anger upon the demons assembled; they contemplated upon Lord Rama and took a giant leap to the chamber of Ravana, cheering “Hail Sri Ramachandra”. They pulled out the huge dome and pillars of the fortress, it put the demons in extreme fear, the women in the palace bet their chest and wept bitterly. Angadha and Hanuman roused trepidations in them with various amusements and praised the glories of Sri Ramachandra. They pulled out golden pillars and jumped over the army of demons, crushed them under their bodies, arms, and feet, some of the demons got hit on their faces, and others got kicked with their legs, loudly spoke “Oh! Wicked demons, you did not worship or devoted to Rama, therefore you all deserve the punishments for your sins.”
