Chapter – 40– Ayodhya
Kandam
In the hermitage in
Chitrakoot, Rama woke up early in the morning, Devi Sita had a dream and
suddenly got out of the sleep, she described that dream to her husband. She had a dream in that Bharatha and the
people of Ayodhya arrived in the woods, Bharatha was extremely shattered of the pain of separation from Rama, and the people of Ayodhya were besieged with
intense grief, and shrunken in pain. She saw her mother-in-laws attired in
unusual clothes. Rama who was listening to the dream of Devi Sita shed tears
and informed Lakshmana that there is something most disturbing and unpleasant
thing that has happened, therefore wait to meet someone with that heartbreaking
news. Rama took a dip in the Payasvini, performed the worship of Lord
Tripurari, and met the ascetics and sages, prostrated before them. He performed
the morning rites, and took a seat looking at the northern direction, there was
fog all over the atmosphere, the creatures and animals rushed to Prabhu and
took shelter in the hermitage of Prabhu. Tulsidas speaks, “The Kiratha and
kolas brought the news of the arrival of Bharatha and the people of Ayodhya, Rama became
extremely happy, his eyes filled with the tears of love for family and people
of Ayodhya.”
Rama immersed in thought
“why did Bharatha visit forest?” another Kiratha informed Rama that Bharatha is
accompanied by his Chathuranga army, Rama became anxious, he remembered the
command of his father, and the love of his brother Bharatha who is righteous,
virtuous and kind and compassionate. Lakshmana began to speak “Oh! Brother, I
would like to speak about the arrival of Bharatha, kindly do not treat it as my
absurdity. Oh! Swami, you are omniscient, I am your servant, and I shall
describe what I have felt about the visit of Bharatha to the forest. Oh! Natha,
you are kind and pleasant natured, virtuous, righteous, and compassionate, you
have great love and respect for all, and you consider everyone equal. The
ignorant take pride in the worldly matters and bondage and behave as they
like. Bharatha is righteous, wise, and pious. He has an intense devotion to Your
lotus feet. Recently, Bharatha has
attained the throne of Ayodhya, he must have forgotten the righteousness, and
he must have arrived to put you in trouble so that he can have the right in
the throne permanently. These two brothers must have some wicked plans that are
the reason for their visit followed by the huge army. They know that we two
are all alone without any support of men in the dense wood, if not, why did he
bring a huge army of men, chariots, horses, and elephants? Who is not free
from pride and haughtiness after attaining immense power and wealth? ”
Lakshman continues “Oh!
Natha, we have heard Chandra evilness to his own preceptor’s wife; Nahusha made
the Saptharishis to carry his palanquin in arrogance and met his destruction, there
was a King Vena who insulted the Sages and Rishis and created obstacles for
Vedic and religious rites, finally met death in the Humkara of Sages.
Sahasrabhahu/Karthaveeryarjuna, Devendra, and Thrishanku are not free from ill
fame, pride, and haughtiness. We cannot blame Bharatha, he is not wrong of
his way of thinking to take away all the rights from you, but he made a mistake,
he undervalued the prowess of Rama, I am sure today he will learn a good lesson
from you.” In this way, Lakshmana’s love for Bharatha turned into fighting spirit;
he prostrated before Rama and took dust from his feet and adorned on the head,
and spoke “Oh! Swami, Bharatha roused my anger, kindly do not mistake me, I am
wielded in bow and arrow, born in Kshatriya clan, and born in the illustrious
clan of Raghu and sincere servant of you.” Lakshman with folded hands requested
Rama’s permission to fight against Bharatha.
Lakshmana, tied up his
matted hair locks, he tightened the bow and arrows, and holding an arrow in one
hand, he spoke “I will teach a lesson to Bharatha in the war field, and I will
prove him that I am your sincere servant, they both/Bharatha and Shathrughna
have disrespected Srirama, therefore they will sleep in the war field, not in
the mattress. I will conquer Bharatha on the battlefield like the eagle seizes
the tiny birds, and the King of lion destroys the herd of elephants. I will not
leave him alive, even if Lord Shankara supports him on the battlefield.” The
directions quivered in the promise of Lakshmana, and LokaPalaka alarmed. The
rage of Lakshmana created trepidation in the atmosphere, immediately a divine
voice heard “Oh! Thatha, you have endless prowess difficult to praise them, therefore you have to think before you act. The
Vedas and intellectuals say that whoever acts in sudden impulse and regret
later is considered as ignorant.” Lakshmana
hung down head in deep embarrassment after listening to the divine voice.
Rama and Devi Sita spoke
affectionately “Oh! Lakshmana, you have spoken about the pride and haughtiness
of the wicked Kings who have not taken shelter at the feet of sages and ascetics
in their lives. Rajamadham, is the toxic poison, but it will
not touch our Bharatha who is virtuous and righteous, it is difficult to find a
pious and noble soul like Bharatha in the creation of the Lord. I have not seen
or heard anyone righteous and generous like Bharatha. He will not change his
attitude even if he attains the status of Bhrama, Vishnu, and Maheshwara. The
darkness may obstruct the sunlight, the sky may remain covered in the clouds, and
Sage Agasthya may sink in the water-filled in the footprint of cow, even the
Earth abandon her endurance and even a mosquito achieve the power to blow off
the Mount Meru, Oh! Brother, Bharatha
never fall prey for Rajamadham/pride and haughtiness of the throne. Oh!
Lakshmana, I shall promise upon you and our father, there is no one like Bharatha who is pure and innocent in the whole world. Oh! Dear brother, Bharatha who
was born in the Surya clan is a Hamsa in the pond of that illustrious clan, it
could remove the milk from the muddy water separately, and he will choose
piousness like milk leaving the impure muddy water.” Rama transformed into a
state of bliss while talking about the righteousness, virtues, and compassion of
Bharatha.
