Lanka Kanda – Hanuman meets the demon Kalanemi who was disguised as a hermit
Ravana could not control his anger shrieked
at Kalanemi that made him realize the situation very well, Kalanemi made up his
mind “I would prefer to die in the hands of the servant of Lord Sri
Ramachandra, definitely not in the hands of Ravana who is the mountain of sins.”
Kalanemi returned to the forest where he has settled, constructed a beautiful hermitage
surrounded by lake, an attractive pond, a lovely garden and shrine in no time
with his illusionary powers. Hanuman arrived in the forest and found a stunning
hermitage thought he could get the guidance of the hermit to locate the
mountain easily, and get rid of thirst to continue journey at a good pace.
Kalanemi who was disguised as a hermit met Hanuman in the hermitage, for a
moment Hanuman was attracted to the marvelous appearance of the hermit, even
the servant of Mayapathi could not resist the Maya of the Lord. Hanuman
prostrated before the hermit, and the hermit began to sing in praise of Lord
Sri Ramachandra. Soon, Kalanemi in the attire of hermit began to speak “Oh!
Friend, I could perceive the fierce battle between Rama and Ravana, at the end
Rama will win over the battle, I have a strong belief in it.” Hanuman requested
for water to quench his thirst was handed the vessel of the hermit was refused
gracefully “Oh! Mahathma, your small water vessel can’t quench my thirst.”
Kalanemi advised “Oh! Friend, kindly proceed to the nearby lake and get
yourself freshened up, and come back to me, I shall initiate to the spiritual
knowledge.”
