Chapter - 88– Sri Ramacharitha Manas –
Lanka Kanda – The description of the Rudhira Saritha/ river of blood on the
battlefield
The most unholy river of blood / Rudhira
Saritha, streamed all over on the battlefield, some of them flee from the war
field, the two armies resembled bank of the stream of blood, the chariots
resembled the sandbank and their wheels as the water current, it was a
frightful scene indeed. The stream of the river of blood crammed with the bodies of
warriors, and animals, represent the aquatic animals, the arrows, spears on the
stream of blood resembled the serpents and alligators, and the bows resembled
the waves, and the shields floated on the blood represented the tortoise. The lifeless
bodies of the warriors resembled huge trees on the Rudhirasaritha, and the
flesh and bones represented the wastage, the courageous cheered at the sight,
and the cowards felt uneasy. The Bhootha, Pretha, Pishacha, Pramathaganas took the plunge into the stream of blood, the crows and crane plucked the human limbs
and flew away, and shared the meat with other creatures, some said “What a
pathetic sight, the fools continues to suffer even after the abundance of meat”
the severely wounded warriors lay half of the body on the sand and remaining
half on the pool of blood, like the practice of giving holy dip to the lifeless
body in the sacred waters, the vultures took pleasure in the meat resembled the
fisherman who patiently waits for the prey to get hooked on the net. The birds perched
on the dead bodies floated on the Rudhriasaritha resembled the latter enjoying
the ferry ride. Yogins, the female Ganas
of Devi Durga hurried to the stream of blood with the skull on their hands, to
devour the blood, the Bootha Vethala and Pishacha danced all over the
battlefield, the female Ganas Chamunda sang in loud voice, with the sounds of
cymbals. The herd of Jackals took great
pleasure in tearing off the fleshes of the dead warriors, the headless bodies
ran all over the battlefield, and the body less head screamed “Victory! Victory!”.
